True the Japanese movies suck too, but does Death Note really need a live action film anyway?
Death Note is a great story that deserves to be more popular, and a Hollywood adaption will bring it to a much wider audience. There's nothing inherently "anime" about Death Note, the characters and story translate well to a live-action format.

I think the only interesting thing about this might be what they decide to do about the supernatural stuff. If they change it around to Christianity and use some of the nastier non-canon books of the bible (gospel of Judas, anyone?) they could do some pretty interesting stuff with the aesthetics and art direction. But eh, if they just go for a 1:1 adaption then whatever. I doubt they do a better job than the anime, and the supernatural stuff will get lost in translation and just be super hokey. I'll probably pass on it.

Pan's Labyrinth/Hellboy is pretty much the route they need to take for the supernatural stuff.

The movie could work as a single film, but they would have to leave out a LOT of stuff out and even a 2 and half hour run time wouldn't be enough. A trilogy is the only way they could do justice to the story.
Part 1: Light experiments with the DN, L investigates, have it end with a cliffhanger
of Kira#2
Part 2: Rest of the L Arc end it
with his death.
Part 3: Near Arc (If they really have to, although I'd definitely would love to see the last few episodes in live action)

They'll hook a lot of people on Part 1 if they implement episodes like 4 and 7, great episodes that shows Light's genius and ingenuity.

IIRC, Light is supposed to be cool and good looking. This actor doesn't seem like a good choice to play him.

Yeah, not trying to sound like a jerk, but I don't think this guy is attractive enough to be Light. Not that he's bad looking by any means, but you know what I mean if you've watched/read Death Note.

Well being set in Japan wasn't too important to the plot of Death Note so it being Americanized isn't too big of a deal. But I consider whoever plays L to be a much more important than whoever plays Light personally.

This picture shows that he had the potential to do Light justice.

If they want to westernize it, Light should be a neckbeard who stumbles upon a phone that kills whoever he texts and he needs to access their full phone number to make it work, as well as their first and last name. It'll be called "Last Call".
