Naughty Dog still working on TLOU Factions

But why should they communicate on rumors?

It's not that they should communicate on rumors. It's that they should be more proactive and just communicate with the community and press better in general. That way, even when you have these kinds of bad rumors stinking up the place, they don't sap out enthusiasm from the fans online having to see it pop up everywhere, and basically doing all of Sony's communication for them.

I saw someone on Reset say that Sony are basically trying to be aloof when it comes to this stuff, like Nintendo. But that doesn't work for Sony because they are in direct competition with Microsoft, which also puts them in adjacent competition with PC/Steam. So no matter how much they would like to just ignore it all and do their own thing, there will be bad faith actors and fanatics from those other communities always stirring the pot with FUD or garbage rumors that spread through spaces online, and to the media, who report on them.

And the cycle repeats. It is not asking much for SIE to do something like bring back Kevin Butler & crew, to communicate better and directly (indirectly?) with the fanbase and media through them.

Tbf the gaming community has been flaming Sony for years last-gen for announcing games way too early.

People should learn to think about what they're asking for.

OT:

Cool, I guess. But I'm done waiting. I'll see it when they're ready to show it.

Hopefully they don't fuck it up. Factions 1 was awesome.

IMO the only games Sony announced way too early were Dreams and The Last Guardian, as evidenced by how long it took them to release after reveal. Otherwise I always felt they had a good timing of reveal to release.

More importantly, they either always delivered on or exceeded beyond what they revealed, so they earned the right to do reveals a few years ahead of release. At this rate we're never going to get anything like an E3 2016 from them ever again and that is very disappointing.

Jaffe barely seems to know anything about Sony studios anymore. He lucked into the Connie Boothe stuff and hasn't given any details despite claiming he knows them.

Well of course; hopefully they aren't too severe.

Wholeheartedly agreed. If you only went by online discussion in enthusiast spaces and social media, you'd think Xbox is dominating and PlayStation is the Turbographx-16 of the generation. It's that bad...in those spaces.

Sales and traditional marketing paint a very different picture but, it would be nice if Sony upped their game with messaging and communication to fans and media about what their studios are actually working on.

And with a likeable face & personality. Someone to counter Phil Spencer's grinning mug.
I'm still holding out hope that the reason Sony have gone dark is because they have a killer showcase coming (one can dream)

The PS5 is selling better than any PlayStation console in history. Why do you think a company who's succeeding needs to change their strategy? It seems like enthusiasm is at an all time high.

I agree. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the timing of their announcements, but there were years of complaints and discussions by people who were impatient af.
It even resulted in "Soony".

And TLG was only shown because someone leaked the footage, so they kinda forced Sony to show the trailer.

Sony listened and people complain again.

So am I, but as time goes on it seems less and less likely. Next year and even 2025 might be a bit rough for 1P non-GaaS releases, but we'll still get Wolverine and maybe Team Asobi's games in that time frame. Other stuff will be 3P collabs whether Sony own the IP or not (Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Death Stranding 2, FFVII Rebirth etc.).

But they did come short of sales targets last fiscal quarter, and I think the demand and supply have stabilized to where they're still much in-demand, just not quite as peak as right after the supply constraints were being cleared up.

We'll probably get a more steady picture of the sales curve starting this month, with the new model, and then into early next year.

But to the greater point...why do Sony have to wait until the current strategy stops working, to open up and communicate better with fans and the media, and have more presence online in terms of messaging? Why not get on top of that proactively? It's an area they could stand to improve and, if anything, would just help the brand be even more performant.

I wouldn't expect a killer showcase. As far as the whole David Jaffe Connie Booth thing goes, I think Connie was the first head to fall before Herman Hulst for a lack of game production.

I think 2024 is going to be a somewhat rough year for Sony 1P games. Maybe we see Wolverine if it is rushed, but outside of that, it's a toss-up, mainly of minor 2nd party titles.

I think Sony looks for a general formula: 1P + 2P + 3P games in a year. If you know 1P is going to be really light, you have to go heavier on 3P and maybe you rush out some 2P games before they're ready like Destruction All-Stars, but 3P is REALLY expensive and has no guarantee of success. If you look at FF16, my guess is Sony probably regrets paying for it, especially since people aren't buying XS to buy games at this rate.

Overall, Sony is probably betting they can have a really weak 2024 without much impact on hardware sales and rebound in 2025.

I think that's why you're seeing cuts now where Sony was able to withstand them earlier in the year and late last year. They can't sustain the higher operating costs for a whole year with reduced revenue likely to be forecasted for 2024 on the basis of less 1P software and they're not going to have anything as big as Spider-Man, so that's certainly the reality of things.

Name the 5 most anticipated games that are confirmed to release in 2024 across the industry.

There isn't a single title out there that is in anyway a mover and shaker.

Nothing really comes to the level of Elden Ring or Hogwarts Legacy.

Sony probably has the best mix of exclusives and non-exclusives with Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and FF7R2.

A lot of games that came out this year probably should have been delayed to next year, but everyone wanted those holiday dollars.

Do you remember the "Abanonded" game? Sony let that shit run on for a YEAR and said nothing. People were out here expecting a new Kojima game. Kojima himself added fuel to the fire of those rumors. Sony sat back and said nothing, like just put the damn rumors out. Shuhei came out and said "i dont know what this game is" Lied through his teeth.

If a rumor gets out of hand, like TLOU Factions, they should clear them up. This is arguably your biggest IP and you're just letting people spread false rumors of its demise all over the place. Is it in development or not?

my 2 cents
Who cares? If you think a game you have no idea about is dead, it does nothing because no one even saw it or knows what else is being worked on and then when it does get announced you realize your folly and aren't so easily gullible.

Yeah, lot to agree with here. And I'm just gonna say it now so people don't act surprised: it's going to be a lot closer between Sony, Nintendo, and even Microsoft the next couple of years than some might want to think. The Switch 2 is not going to be a joke and will have a lot more 3P support early on compared to the first. I'm expecting Capcom's gonna be there big from Day 1 probably with ports of RE4 Remake, Street Fighter 6 and RE9 (if it's ready for next year) plus Monster Hunter. Square-Enix is probably going to have a double-package of FF VII and Rebirth for it near launch or shortly after. Baldur's Gate 3 is going to have a port to it near launch. Tekken 8 will be there from early on, and I bet a lot of the new Western 3P AAA releases coming next year will have ports on Switch 2.

Microsoft's going to go hard with marketing ABK stuff and tying all their content to Microsoft brand (Game Pass & Xbox). They're going to tie a massive amount of guns/cosmetics/skins/EXP/etc. bonuses to Game Pass subscriptions to drive COD, Diablo, Overwatch, Candy Crush etc. players to the service. And a lot of those will probably be focused specifically on Xbox Game Pass, because they'll want to drive console sales growth. Hell, if that plays out well Microsoft'll probably start being more aggressive with similar perks tied to Game Pass subs for 3P games, too. Not anything "exclusive" BTW; I just mean that you can either get that gun for "free" with a Game Pass sub, or pay $10 to get it on PlayStation & Steam. Stuff like that.

Sony still has a lot going for them next year, even if internal 1P non-GaaS releases might be pretty light. They got Rebirth (albeit only 3 months exclusivity), should have Stellar Blade, and Rise of the Ronin as well. Also most likely Death Stranding. GaaS-wise they have Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show (that one's a regular). There will be new content for GT7 and Destiny 2 as well, and possibly either Fairgame$ or Concord. However I don't think Wolverine is coming 2024, that's more likely 2025 at this point.

I just hope things like the rumor of SIE working with SEGA and Bandai-Namco on bringing back legacy IP are true, because Sony needs more games like that. They don't have to be AAA games, either, so less pressure for them to sell 20 million copies (or even 10 million copies, or even 5 million copies in some cases) in order to have big profit margins. They need to make other changes too, mainly with PC. Porting the current-gen non-GaaS titles to PC is just a bad strategy and damages the value proposition of the console long-term IMHO. The ports don't even sell particularly well on PC anymore so, what's the effort honestly for?

If they want to bring those IP to PC that is perfectly fine, but make games TAILORED for the PC audience. Don't port GOW: Ragnarok; make a GOW RTS/4x-style game and put that on PC (like what MS did with Gears Tactics & Halo Wars). They should be doing for PC & Mobile, what Nintendo's done for Mobile. You didn't see Nintendo wholesale port Mario Kart to Apple & Google because that would damage the value proposition of the game on Switch (and the console itself) so what did they do? They made a mobile spinoff with the IP instead, which was the smart decision. Sony need to be doing that with their games going from console to PC or mobile. That way they still grow the IPs beyond console but without jeopardizing the console or lowering its value proposition over time.

But yeah, 2024 & 2025 are going to be very interesting and possible indicators of longer-term fortunes for the consoles. So for Sony/SIE in particular, I want to see if they make the right changes. History shows they usually do, so I'm expecting the same here too. If not? Welp, it's been a hell of a run.

A lot of things that people say online are just drama and FUD attempts to get clicks? I'm shocked 👀

Anyway I wouldn't lose other years of development on this game and I think they don't want as well.
I won't be surprised if this is released next year in a package with TLOU2 Remake/Remastered on PS5 being the Factions mode it was supposed to be on a larger scale.

Imagine going up to Bill Belichik or Alexander the Great or Steve Jobs and saying that. "I know our strategy is working better than it ever has, but why wait for it to stop working when we can just make it stop working ourselves and do something totally different?"

PlayStation is employing their current strategy because games are taking longer than ever to make and they only have 16 studios. They're not communicating with fans at the rate you want for a very real, and tangible reason.

The mystique and aura surrounding PlayStation is serving them just fine.

But I didn't say for them to stop with the current plan, just to add towards it. Which would make the plan even better, since it's taking care of a weak point while still doing everything that is currently working (and this new thing they're adding to the plan, doesn't mess up what they're currently doing).

I get that they only have so many studios and don't want to run dry with announcements, but I'm not even talking about announcements of new games. That's just a tiny part of it. When I say they can do with better messaging, I mean in terms of just engaging with the community and the press, with likeable faces & relatable personalities. They can do that for talking about upcoming games, current releases, older games, 3P games they're working with, community events (tournaments, contests, celebrations etc.) or just macro-level stuff about the industry.

The stroke of genius would be to bring back mascots like Kevin Butler and do it with some tongue-in-cheek humor and satire. That doesn't suddenly mean they need to be revealing new 1P games every single month. And, if they did this, it doesn't suddenly mean the current strategy goes away or becomes a conflict.

How effective was Kevin Butler really when the PS3 was a major disappointment for Sony? I think sometimes we put too much stock into stuff like that.

They've already won the mindshare discussion on console, the question is where Sony goes next as a platform holder and as a publisher.

Game is going to suck and Sony fans are going to pretend it's good.
No that is impossible when you think about who is making the game.
Uncharted online on PS3 was very good and fun so was TLOU online. The only thing they will get wrong about this game is like pricing on stuff to buy or get. This game will shine in graphics and gameplay and lots of other stuff I am absolutely sure about that.As long as they don't make it pay to win or pay to advance then everything is good.

It's very very unlikely it's going to suck. Naughty Dog has a great track record, and they've already made an excellent TLOU MP game before. They know how to do these games.

They were probably going for something too ambitious, but a refocused effort will likely see them make an excellent MP game.

Called it. People were either being stupid or just spreading FUD.

You had a lot of xbox fans, GaaS haters, and ND haters pushing the narrative that it was cancelled purely driven by agenda.

But yeah, it has a very high chance of success when partnered with the TV show.

What we'll see for season 2:

TLOU P1 will start selling again on PC, especially now that it is has been fixed (86% in the last 30 days)

TLOUP2 will be ported to PC and probably PS5. And this will sell well due to the tv show.

A lot of people will want to keep playing and that is where TLOU Online comes into play. We're looking at 2025 release date most likely. Has just as much potential as GTA Online and Red Dead Online.

How they monetize the game is going to really matter. They could just bundle the online mode with TLOU2 on PS5 and PC, or it could be F2P, or it could just be a stand-alone game to buy, and/or there could be MTX.

Was definitely obvious that Sony/Naughty Dog wouldn't just give up on it.

They already communicate frequently with media and fans via PS blog, social media, youtube trailers and so on.

Regarding bullshit and lies stuff said by random annonymous dozens of millions internet users, they can't be denying. If you believe what a random 4chan or Twitter user says it's your fault, not theirs.

Regarding this game they teased a bit last year and mentioned that were going to show more this year. People rioted when wasn't shown in the showcase (they never said they were going to show it there), so they said that they were working on it but that the game needed more time.

The gamedevs are a reliable source. Random internet users in forums, social media or gaming websites aren't. Specially those who often share lies and FUD over that particular publisher or developer.

IMO the only games Sony announced way too early were Dreams and The Last Guardian, as evidenced by how long it took them to release after reveal. Otherwise I always felt they had a good timing of reveal to release.
This game started its development in 2019 and it's going to be the biggest ND game ever, their first game for this gen, their first MP game, their first GaaS and got covid lockdowns during development.

This sounds as something that is going to need maybe at least 6-7 years, so at least 2025-2026 release. In recent years Sony rarely reveals games more than aprox. a year and a half before its planned release to avoid later people complaining because of downgrades (several years before release it's almost impossible to predict how he game is going to exactly look). So for them it would make sense to reveal it next year.

They're not communicating with fans at the rate you want for a very real, and tangible reason.
They communicate with fans via social media, youtube, PS blog and press releases every week and almost every day. And they have or participate in many special streamed events (state of play, showcase, doritos summer of games, doritos awards, CES, etc) per year.

More than ever before. But they no longer announce games to be released in 4 years: they focus on the games planned to be released in the next few months, maximum around a year and a half.

We're three years in and Sony had 1 first party game this year. We know that Helldivers 2 and Death Stranding are coming next year, but this is not much better. They don't want to announce games 4 years in advance... okay but unless they show something, then what else are we supposed to think except that 2024 is going to be another sorry year.

Personally I preferred when games where announced years in advance

Death Stranding 2 never got a release window. 2024 is a complete guess.

Watch this be the only "new" game ND releases this gen. People gonna try so hard to like finding that purple barbwire wrapped bat with +5.5% stability.

I doubt it. Think they'll have at least this one and one single player game.

They have multiple teams running multiple projects.

If they make a new IP that's on the shorter side then possibly they might squeeze out 3 games this gen.

But if I was a betting man I'd guess two games which will be a similar amount to other Sony Studios.

I think TLOU 2 PS5/PC will release in 2025 to coincide with Season 02. And TLOU Online could be a 2026/ title. ND may release their other game (TLOU 3, most likely) before TLOU Online.

They'll be working on it until they're not. Whether that means the game comes out in some form, or gets canned, we already know that it's slowed to a crawl.

Gotta feel bad for Agrawal here, as this was major climb up the ladder at ND, but I really doubt this ends up being a tentpole final product from them.

Incorrect. They released the following this year:
  • Horizon Burning Shores
  • GT 7 PS VR 2
  • MLB The Show 23
  • Destiny Lightfall
  • Horizon Call of the Mountain
  • Firewall Ultra
  • Spider-Man 2
Helldivers 2 and Stellar Blade were also scheduled for release this year but got delayed into 2024.

If there's any truth to the rumors floating around...

Hopefully the message from Naughty Dog (my favorite studio) to Bungie ( a studio I hate) was to get fucked.

You never know.

Maybe Factions 2 was canned recently, but then got back on track.

Bungie was hired to be GAAS overseer. They probably took a look at progress and said shut it down. Then turns out Bungie is doing shit themselves needing to cut people and missing forecast by 45%. So hey, who the fuck wants to listen to a studio whose house isn't in order themselves. So step aside Bungie, execs are making the call for Factions 2 to keep going.
