NBA Elite delayed/NBA Jam coming as standalone game for 360/PS3

I'll say this: Peter Moore has balls of steel.

Over the past three years, EA SPORTS development teams have had a laser focus on creating titles packed with innovation and unsurpassed quality. The acclaim from fans and critics on most of our titles the past few years makes us proud and it also motivates us to keep getting better.

This year, we set extremely ambitious goals for our new franchise, NBA ELITE. We are creating a game that will introduce several breakthrough features that have been missing from the basketball genre. Unfortunately, NBA ELITE 11 is not yet ready and we have made a decision to delay next month’s launch. We are going to keep working until we’re certain we can deliver a breakthrough basketball experience.

In the meantime, the NBA season is just around the corner and we have a plan to keep our consumers close to the action:

-NBA JAM will launch on the Wii, as scheduled, on October 5. NBA JAM won recognition this summer as the best sports game at E3 and it’s a blast to play. In addition to the Wii version, we’re going to ship NBA JAM as a standalone product on the Xbox360 and PS3 in time for the holidays. Watch for more news soon on the exact timing of that release.

-For NBA LIVE 10 players, we will continue to offer free content and services throughout the 2010-11 season. We will start with a new roster update so you get all the players for the new season, free of charge. We will also provide free Dynamic DNA updates, daily, for the entire season. That’s a full season of basketball with new rosters and updates, free.

The decision to delay NBA ELITE was hard because the game has great promise. But ultimately we feel this is the right thing to do. We’ve been making steady progress on basketball for the past few years and it’s going to take extra time to make the game.

Why make this decision now? As with all of our titles, we continue to evaluate and improve the code right up until launch. Feedback from consumers is a very important part of the process . NBA ELITE had the benefit of play-testing, a demo and a lot of our own research. All that feedback revealed some concerns about gameplay polish, so we’ve listened to your feedback, and made a judgment that the game would benefit from more time in development.

I want to thank our NBA ELITE development team for their efforts to meet this year’s lofty goals, and we’re behind them as they continue their work. While no one is happy with this delay, we appreciate the support and ongoing feedback from our fans. We’ll have more information coming soon.

Shipping NBA Jam as a disc game = no sale for me. Unless it's $40 or less, I'm not interested (wasn't interested before either).

Downloadable or retail?

Sounds like a disk release to me. Which is weird since the achievements are already on achievement websites. 200 pts like an arcade game.

Well, looks like they are giving some more weeks for the HD version, though.

Sucks that NBA Jam PS3 is going to be delayed as a result of this but at least I won't have to hunt for NBA Jam game codes on eBay now.

"Shipping"=disc? 50-59.99 dollars?

Exactly. And since they are not going to release in the same day as the Wii version, I believe they will include all the modes plus online and it will clearly be a boxed copy for full price.

And I don't believe NBA Elite 11 was delayed, it was cancelled. He even says they are going to support NBA Live 10 with free updates all season long, so why would they do that if they intend to release Elite 11 in early 2011?

This will probably be for the better, because had they released Elite 11 that alone would have killed the rebrand. Now they have 12 more months to work on the game and hopefully get it right. It has potential but the 5 vs. 5 was atrocious.

Kudos to EA for doing this -- Elite was 5 steps backwards from last year's Live, which was by far the best b-ball game EA had put out in nearly 10 years.

It's funny how people are happy they get to pay for one $59.99 game instead of two. Unless, of course NBA Jam has a lower MSRP.

They are charging full Wii game price for that version. I cant imagine it being cheaper than the 49.99

This definitely cost EA a lot of money. Shareholders are likely not happy, and at the very least they paid to put the game through certification with both Sony and Microsoft. And if this decision was only JUST made, that means that discs were being pressed and packaged as well. Most corporate executives would not have the stones to do what Peter Moore just did. You've got to at least give him that.

And if I had to GUESS, I'd figure that the omitted career mode will be added back into the PS360 versions of NBA Jam, 800 more points' worth of Achievements will be thrown in there real quick, and a $40 retail version of Jam will be out around Thanksgiving. But I don't have any insider info. That's purely my own speculation.

So instead of getting this game as a pack-in with another game, one has to buy it seperately. Instead of 2 for 1 it's now 1 for 1.

And people are happy.

Who is supposed to understand this world.

This is a very smart and forward-looking move. Better to sacrifice the NBA game this year rather than destroy the reputation of the franchise completely. Hopefully the extra time will make it great.

LOL at the obvious conspiracy. :lol :lol :lol

How are they going to price it? Something that now people 'expect' to be free with Elite, but $50 on the Wii?

Sounds like it's a retail game, not downloadable.

wow.

I wonder what the shareholders will say about this decision.

I think it is the right decision though. NBA Elite seems to be a step in the right direction, but the current version seems to be still lacking and could have given the new brand name already a bad name from the start.

If they manage to get up to FIFA and NHL standards then they will have a long-term winner.

You sound like an expert, would you say that EA shot themselves in the foot with this?
