NBA LIVE 18 demo is up on Xbox and PSN

As someone who only plays 2k for MyCareer. I'm about ready to make the jump to Live. First thing i noticed is how smooth the animations were. They feel so fluid. You play 2k for all of 10 minutes and you can see the game run through it's set of stunted pre-canned animations depending on the situation. Things just felt more natural here and i liked it.

Going back to the animations, when players would run plays on offense whether it be trying to find their spot on the 3pt line or setting a PnR they looked very natural and fluid. I felt myself actually scanning the court a lot more to ensure that someone wasn't open off a cut somewhere because all the movement looked believable. When you call for a PnR in 2k, its so slow and clunky it's almost like you can see the system thinking about what you're asking it to do.

The $40 price point is sweet too. I think i might bite.

I am glad a lot of folks are liking the game, but come on. Live's as guilty of these pre-canned animations. All you gotta do is get someone to hip ride you and initiate a step back jumper to see.

I am as happy as everyone else that Live put out a competent product this year, but some of the gushing about how this supposedly is the exact opposite of 2k's "animation heavy" gameplay are just drinking that cool aid.

I've got a lot of clips on my ps4 to show receipts, but going over OS, there are already a bunch of people pointing this out.

1) Watch as how Steph Curry is ahead of Kyrie on the break here, and should have an easy lay-up. He instead gets sucked into an animation to force a contest. Two things to look at here: 1) Steph slows down as he gathers for the lay-up, and 2)Kyrie speeds up like Usain Bolt when he's about to initiate the contest animation.

2) Watch the initial sequence after the pick and roll, where a guy should have an easy layup or dunk gather, but instead, a scripted 2 hand block-steal sequence was activated: http://xboxclips.com/Teebone21/859e65af-e0cb-4a42-970a-a64941521244

3) Watch here as KD attempts a blow by after lebron slides away out of position, only to get sucked into Lebron and resulting in a contact layup animation leading to a block:

4) Lastly, watch as Steph counters a hip ride animation with a step back to force an exaggerated reaction from kyrie to get an open shot.

I can't refute any of what you're pointing out but for me it all flows together pretty well within the realm of acceptable video game jank. To my eye, the worst gif on here is the fast break with steph and kyrie because as you pointed out, it's extremely clear to see that steph slowed down and kyrie sped up but even then, the animation for the contest was pretty smooth.

I exaggerate not when i say that every single game that i play in 2k, i can be barreling into the lane for a dunk (not even accounting for me being a maxed out center with a posterizer badge, etc) and you can literally see my player start the dunk animation (clearly in the air, arm cocked back) and some how someway someone near me will contest and then on a dime my entire animation morphs into some completely weird nonsensical shit where it forces me into a ridiculous layup animation that 99% of the time will completely miss and to add insult to injury there's rarely if ever a foul called. It looks completely ridiculous and yet it never ceases to amaze me.

i see a lot of people here and on other forums saying how the game feels stiff but other than not having that same fidelity with the dribbling that 2k has, watching and playing the demo for live just felt more fluid

Ok it is just ridiculous to spend this much time playing a one game demo of The same two teams over and over and restarting my One character over and over... haha. Every game is different

Wish this was coming out sooner.

Was planning on getting 2K for the Switch for portability reasons. But I think the demo made me change my mind. I haven't gotten very deep into an NBA game since 2K11 (the best IMO) and this seems to take all of the things I like about Madden (presentation, Ultimate Team, that sort of stuff) and a surprisingly decent basketball game around it.

EA was really smart to release this demo, they must be confident that Live is moving in the right direction.

I saw that, and as always with 2k, let's see first.

It's the same shit every year. Game gets exposed within weeks. And then the next blog says "this is totally different! We are aware of the issues and this is the 180 we've done!"

Obviously they're trying to be improved so I'm not knocking them for that, it's silly to do so. But they are really good at hyping up a lot of nothing because they'll do the same song and dance next year about probably the same thing. How many times have we heard a variation of "the game is back in YOUR hands!" Read old blogs. Same shit different words. I'll believe when I see it.

Tbh most of my disgust is born out of their terrible servers and overcharging for VC. Without those two legacy problems I'd probably be really excited too.

(From the 2K Blog.)

Hesi pull-ups, jimbo.

We’ve also added the ability to do walking size-ups and combos. It may sound like a small addition but it’s one of my favorite things to do as a ball handler this year. We were in Mocap watching guys play 1-on-1 and nearly every possession they were pulling off these creep-up dribble size-ups before attacking the rim or pulling up for jumpers. Frankly, it baffled me that we’d never supported them as it’s such an integral part of the game. But I’m happy to say that you can now do double crosses, cross to wraps, cross to tweens, hesi crosses, and much more while creeping up in NBA 2K18. This is easily the deepest ball handling has ever been in any game. But the best thing about it is seeing the community invent all sorts of combos I didn’t even know were possible when designing the system. Seeing this creativity is one of the things I look forward to most every year so get those 2KTV Top Plays ready.

This sounds pretty sick.

This, too:

On the defensive end of the floor there were a ton of improvements as well. The biggest thing for a lot of our users was the dribble drive game. This is something we spent a lot of time on and it’s come a long way since last year. Many people complained about “stonewalling” defenders that were able to clamp down ball handlers regardless of their ratings and, somewhat unrealistically, stifle the dribble drive game. The interactions and logic for ball handler/on-ball defender collisions were reworked and it feels MUCH better. In NBA 2K18, if the ball handler can get a step on his man or is a Westbrook or LeBron coming downhill prepare to see a blow-by for a clear drive to the hoop. It feels really good now to get your defender leaning one way, attacking his drag foot, and seeing your ball handler quickly swim by the defender without getting snatched into a heavy bump animation. Sure the Kawhi Leonards of the league can still clamp down slower ball handlers, but for the most part, you’ll see a lot of “hip riding” this year compared to the knockbacks and dribbler stuns from the past.

I was leaning Live, but I'm definitely going to play both before deciding.

Truuu. To be fair though I don't think they've ever outright acknowledged the fact that their shit has always been super animation heavy since the birth of the series and that they have changed it. We'll just have to see on Prelude. If real though, hype. Because for some reason the trailer didn't do it for me for the first time ever.

So true.

You've actually given me an idea. If I'm up for it, I'll go through blogs/info they gave us the previous 4 years to see how much of it was just pure bs. Then I'll post it on OS.

Too bad EA isn't giving the Switch a Live port alongside Fifa.

For the people complaining about canned animations, read 2Ks gameplay blog. I'd give Prelude a try before buying Live 18

Blabla...im in full control with my stick...blabla...they said the same last year. Their marketing machinery is in full effect and everyone falls to it like every year. Why not show gameplay to prove what they have changed instead of letting us read through walls of text?

They are making some very bold statements, if you read through this you might think this is a brand new game. IF it is ill predict well see LOTS of patches, because this will not be perfect from the start....

And would ya look at that OS thread. It's turned into "OMG stop saying negative things about this game or else get out!"

Like, a criticism of a "I've seen this before" is met with THAT'S NOT CONSTRUCTIVE!

Fucking shills. This is why I can't stand 2k's fanboys. You can spot them from a mile away. "2k addressed every major concern" no they didn't STFU.

Exactly! If they were confident that movement and other aspects of the game have improved, why not show it? Seeing is believing.

LOL I saw that exact post and addressed it. That dude is super delusional when it comes to 2K basketball. He will twist around everything to justify why the game is the way it is. It's so stupid.

I'm treading lightly in there because just about anything I say will get me a permanent ban, lol. I'd like to say "I don't give a shit" but sometimes I got questions about other sports games, and there's probably going to be a point where I might need to find teammates/whatever and I still need my account for that. Unfortunately.

We still have yet to hear about MyCareer, Park, Progression, etc.
More than likely it's still going to be stupid. "Hey let's make them spend 10-11 hours entering/exit a gym to do a bunch of pointless drills" who the fuck thought that was a good idea and approved it?

Finally tried the demo and wow imo it's really bad. Gameplay has gotten better but the animations are beyond terrible. Graphics are nice though...

I will wait till this game hits EA Access to play it but 2k18 is a day one purchase for me.

Just wanted to point out that the price if you are buying from Best Buy is:

$32 for NBA Live if preordered w/ GCU
$48-$10 ($10 Gift Certifcate w/ Preorder = $38 for 2k18 w/ GCU

Still trying to figure out what I like better, I want something more casual so leaning towards Live since it looks great

You have to tread more than lightly on that forum. I got permabanned for something incredibly minor. I actually can't even remember right now, now that I think of it. Maybe dropping an F bomb or something. They're ridiculous.

I will check this up over the weekend.
I love nba2k series but I feel like I need to try out something different that will look fresh..

I don't even posted on OS because of that. Very ban happy over there.

I'm gonna bite on a NBA game this year.
Playing the live demo and seems good. But 2k is the industry standard, is it not?

man, $32 w/ GCU makes it an enticing pick up

edit: welp i had $10 in certificates, so i'm picking it up for $24

Yah, and after the honeymoon phase is over the cycle continues. Everyone starts bitching how this game sucks again and they wont preorder 2k19. Next summer they all fall again...

Link? Don't remember that. They never acknowledged they scrapped canned animations til now.

Do you really think they turned this game into a 100% physics based game within one iteration? Of course there will still be canned animations, toned down maybe, but they will still exist.

OS is filled with shills and yes men right now

It has made me understand how 2k sells so well. They're truly marketing geniuses who know how to rope people in and get them to turn into suckers.

I'm pretty glad for some new and improved things but all the other bells and whistles honestly do not impress to me.

Yea that other game is more VC bull and Live has some really good game modes. Don't need open world bs in my sports games

Already have this paid for

They should hire that guy with the Dirk avatar because he knows how to spin any negative concern towards the users instead of the devs/publisher.

LOL I know who you're talking about. But he is far from alone.

So many of them there.

All people pointed out was basically "I don't think neighborhood is a big change there's still a lot of things left to be desired" and everyone else flipped a shit.

I think I figured out who you are on OS. Enso or nddot lol

Can't believe there are people trashing a guy for helping others out on choosing which version of 2K18 they wanna buy this year. Dude literally broke it down with numbers and great reasoning but instead of a thanks, you have people giving him shit. That's why I stopped posting there for years until recently.

And it's mostly due to OS becoming a marketing wing for 2K. They banned, or close any topics that's too critical of 2K, leaving mostly the "shills" with the loudest voice

It plays right into the overall argument of Game Journalism getting to friendly with Publisher/Devs for exclusive access and therefore diluting their objectivity

Nah, but those dudes seem to be in the same boat as me. I like those guys. And I know exactly what thread you're talking about.

Also, just look at my username here...and then you'll know what my username there is. LOL

My mind has a list of the people who are 2k stans/fanboys/diehards/Yes-Men whatever you call it. You know damn well who I'm talking about. It's all the guys who like any 2k-Homer post. They were all over that thread and in one of the threads where me and others were getting ripped because we disturbed their all-happy thread with "This neighborhood shit ain't what yall think it is" posts.

We got people there calling the neighborhood an open world. LMAO.

This is what The Neighborhood has:
1. The playground. The same thing as the park, basically.
2. The Downtown Court...a jumpshot game. Okay, this is new.
3. 2k Zone --- play trivia, pick' em, blacktop. I'm not sure what the blacktop thing. But is trivia and pick 'em that revolutionary? Who the hell will actually spend time here? This shit could have been and is in the damn mobile app.
4. Foot locker store---was already around. Except all we had to do was hit some buttons to get to the store. Now we gotta walk there.
5. The venue---pop up center for events. This was already in last year. Just a different name.
6. King of the court---1 v 1. This is new.

So of all the things I listed, all that's really new is #2 and #6. Perhaps blacktop might be newish, but we all know blacktop already existed.

People acted like this was some game changing revolution, and all some of us did was point out that it really wasn't. Stop nitpicking over minor things you don't care about and let us be happy, they said.

Yeah. And when anybody who works for 2k pops in, a lot of those posters turn into fanboys and start kneeling down for them. It's pretty amusing and gross to watch at the same time.

I'm fine with Czar though. I think he is doing his best at what his job is, he's all about trying to make game play better...but at the end of the day, he's also got to play a part in trying to sell the game too.

Also, you're "justified" on there also right?

Just bought Live! It will be nice to play a good basketball game without VC being thrown in my face at every turn and a story character that doesn't start at 57 overall to entice you to buy VC

I haven't bothered posting on OS in years because of how shit the community is

Most of them are a mix of stupid and simp, but I've found some people to play with on there that I like. That became a necessity when I realized that most of the randoms you play with are the worst players and people. You can usually tell just by how they post.

People keep saying "There are other ways to earn VC besides MyCareer" and don't realize a big reason people are annoyed is because we just want to play with/against people and it takes a huge money time investment to do it. Or make a similar post saying "Hey I don't play the mode you play but this game is great for me so STOP COMPLAINING!"

I'm so glad I have this place to vent lol

moodmuzik is a fucking idiot

also when that guy clapped back, "dude...you are an idiot!! 100% dumbest response I have ever read!" I laughed so hard.

Yea Czar is legit, and can get his point across while still being apart of the community, and an employee.

And yea Im justified over there with an L (justlfied)

Hoping the early EA access starts later this week. Already have it preordered

Most fun I've had with a ball game in years (demo).

Every 2k game last few years just feels like floaty sim fan service. Live feels like more controllable fun bball

Agree with 2K11 being 2K's Opus..the year before everything was sacrificed for microtransactions and everything went to shit.

I've checked out (and not purchased) all 2K's since, and they have not progressed at all on the animation front, aside from a lick of paint here and there.

Live 18 demo has me wanting again. The fluidity is there (albeit a bit rubber banded and nerfd). But pulling off plays, jazzy passing, P&R's with ease has me in the EA camp this year.

Atmosphere still goes to 2K tho... Surprised, as EA usually knock it out of te park in that dept. Tis only a demo tho.. That could change...

I saw the Miami Heat avatar and they responded exactly how I thought you would so I assumed LOL.

I just smh every time I see these dudes defending the games like they have some stake in the company. I personally believe they feel a way since they don't want devs to stop posting little nuggets here and there about the new games before release.

2K marketing dept. loves to recycle old features as new but people fall for the same tactics every single year. Then they will bitch about old issues that never gets fixed.

I agree about Czar. Since he isn't the director he doesn't have too much influence on the game's direction but I can tell he still has the community at heart more than anything.

The details about changes he goes into are insane and then he is very honest about something not working as intended or at all when the heat comes his way. Still have to be cautious though since he is an employee after all.

I figured that's what the connection was. Thankfully you didn't mix me up with mood.

These guys just don't get it. To be honest, interacting with them makes me want to get the game even les, because I feel like I should vote with my wallet. But I'm not sure my single purchase would change a thing. I guess that's why I keep trying to talk sense into those 2k stans, but it looks like it just won't work.

Can't wait for 2k20 when each team member needs to chip in 250 VC to enter a game. 2k's excuse is going to be "We want to ensure quality matches for our players so people have less incentive to play horribly" and people will clap their hands for that and make excuses for them.

The people who say "You gotta pay for a haircut in real life so this is sim" make me dumber just by reading it.
A minimum game check is at least $9000, and the most you can earn in most games is about 1000 VC. Nobody pays $9000 for a haircut. Stop trying to say it's sim.

If theres a solo MyPlayer type career mode, I might give this a shot instead of 2k this year. I need to build my 6'9" point guard dunk scientist.

Just got an update. Saw online that they added the Rockets and Celtics to the demo.

Yea been playing it since this morning. It is awesome update to a demo... EA early access hopefully starts later this week.

They tweaked the gamelay the last few updates too game plays Smooth, so much less foot sliding and better lighting than 2k.

Plays a great game of ball and you feel in control of your players instead of watching them slide around and do stuff after pushing buttons.

The dribbling with the stick is so great. Tough to master, but beating your defender feels like you actually worked to beat him.

Yea agreed. It really does feel good compared to what I've gotten used to before with 2k which felt disconnected.

This game really is back
