NBA2K18 launching on Switch in September

for the love of god please don't use the 360/ps3 versions as a base.

obviously switch is not as powerful as ps4 but it can run unreal engine 4, so it should be able to run a ps4/bone game with lower res/assets etc. just put in the work devs!
pretty please

I guess it's nice they are brining it to the switch as it needs all the games it can get. Hopefully it's not a feature gimped half ass port. I wonder how many people would really be excited for something like this though. Using those little joycons on a game like this with a small screen sounds kind of rough.

If only you could play Switch games on the television with a normal controller..

What does running "unreal engine4 " means? Like really? Because Switch hardware cant handle any graphical demanding AAA UE4 game without big compremises. Hell Street Fighter 5 is one UE4 game runs terrible on lower hardwares.

Also game is not devoloped on Unreal Engine.

Yeah ...If only something that could let you use those JoyCons as a regular controller was actually available, or even included in the basic SKU. Something that, you know, lets you grip those joycons, sigh.

This is good news, and this is how you do it.

Bring your current game to Switch at the same time as the other versions, and say 'Yeah it doesn't look as good, but it's a fully portable version of the exact same game with multiplayer available right out of the box.'

That's got to appeal to a bunch of people, surely. Not everyone is like NBA players who have special bags made for their consoles to travel on the road, lol.

It's gotta have near feature parity if it's the same price tag though. I'd be cool with a visual downgrade but not with worse controls or features for $60

Great news. There's no reason they can't get it looking better than the PS360 version as they have a decent bit more power to play with.

These could be real sellers: out of the box MP and playable on the go. Being able to play FIFA against a mate on the bus into uni etc would be absolutely HUGE in the U.K. at least.

FIFA needs to full fat Ultimate team. Ditch Career mode or The Journey, but get Ultimate team in.

I'll probably get one of each FIFA/NBA so I have them and I'll never get further versions, just to have portable versions of them. The real killer for me would be Madden. Pls EA.

Of course you can but I'd be willing to wager that the market for people wanting to play NBA 2k on switch on their tv is pretty darn small. A lot of people that would buy that game will play on their PS4's or Xbox's they already have. The ones that this would be marketed towards are people that want to play on the go on the small screen. Just don't be surprised when this is the only version of NBA 2k that gets released on the system as history tends to repeat itself. Maybe I'm completely wrong.

UE4 is a modern engine; Switch supports modern engines (with downgrades); Switch should be able to support the modern 2k engine (with downgrades).

What about the joycon would make things hard? It has the same buttons as DS4.

Y'know, Nintendo should really advertise for these games. You know how many people would be excited to play 2K and FIFA on the go? Probably a lot more than we'd think. Get your install base up Nintendo.

I mean,Vita tried this with madden, FIFA and MLB. I'm just not sure that the audience for those games isn't already being adequately serviced by console releases and is neccesarily looking for new ways to play them. It's the reason these kinds of sports games always feel so secondary on Nintendo hardware.

But no one really gave a shit about the Vita, not even Sony. I think the general public knows about the Switch, but the Vita? Doubtful

You have perfectly conveyed my thoughts.

I was envisioning a single Joycon. Using both would be perfectly fine.

Oh, the 2 sides hooked to a cradle is what popped into my head, but I guess that would be joycons.

I'm sure the game will be fine on a functional level but the online stuff would suffer from the crazy low population. 2k should have lead with WWE. That could be played on a single joycon half and Nintendo has a storied history of multiplayer wrestling games. Makes more sense than reviving Street Fighter II because it was a SNES home exclusive one time.

But do people give a shit about the Switch because of games like this? I'm not saying the Switch won't be successful I'm saying I doubt these kinds of throw in ports that a lot of gamers already have a way to play likely won't move the needle either way.

i am not the core audience but i prefer my sports games on portables

there's a correlation there to the fact all my sports games are Japanese-only releases. Pro Yakyuu Spirits 14 is the greatest baseball game of all time, ever, and it's on Vita.

I think for perhaps those who aren't already invested heavily in these games elsewhere (I mean, I agree, if my friends are all playing this on PS4 or whatever, why would I buy it on Switch?), the main appeal would likely be being able to play it in bed, or elsewhere in the home, or on the train etc. In other words, having the option of Handheld mode, not so much Tabletop mode.

For handheld mode it sounds awesome as long as it's a full featured version. If it's 59.99 and severely lacking then no. But again I think the market for this type of experience is really small.

i just realized something though.....graphics aside....the load times for 2k18 should be fucking godlike due to the carts compared to the molasses console versions. Being able to you know.....actually play the game smoothly and fast might take my priority over just the graphics.

Load times for 2k17 on PS4 and Xbox One are atrocious when using stock drives....its a joke

Actually NBA2K is a pretty good game to offer for a handheld since it has robust SP features. It can be a fun game to tool around in career or management modes.

i would love NHL as well, EA finally got a decent NHL game going again starting with '16.

Will it be age gated like the X1/PS4 version? My son is loves the NBA 2K games (second only to Madden), but he can barely play half of the game modes with his own account because is under 13 (apparently). I refuse to buy him the game until it is hugely discounted since they (2K) feel the need to lock him out of the modes he wants to play.

Would love to hear about WWE 2k18 on Switch at some point. Personal policy to have a wrestling game for every system I get (even went with the 3DS version of all stars).

Im interested in the control scheme, especially when play couch-coop with one Joycon.

NBA2K, when playing at an advance level, has legitimate use of every button on a full size controller

I mean hypothetically I would just get 2k on the switch for portable my player mode.

You will need to maintain 2 MyPlayers in this case. If you start your MyCareer Online it must remain so, to access it offline you have to switch it to Offline Mode (or start off so), however you cant go back to Online mode

Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 had NBA 2K17 released last September. No reason they can't slap a roster update on it and call it a day.
Have a feeling this will be based on the PS4 version with lower quality assets. 2K sports games don't seem to use as expensive animation, physics and AI systems as EAs games (or basically don't need as much CPU power)-- a lot of the NBA 2K gameplay is a heavily refined version of the PS2 era games whereas with every generation leap EA has redone major parts of their gameplay engines. With Madden and FIFAs first iteration on this gen the only big changes they made was enhancing the AI to do more look ahead calculations than what was possible on the previous gen. which is why they can't just port FIFA from PS4/XB1 to switch.

They said a lot of games will require both Joycons. The multiplayer with 1 Joycon each will likely be only relegated to simpler games like Mario Kart and Smash.

I believe there's a segment of gamers who consume sports games like crack. The ability to build skills faster, by playing more/anywhere, can be irresistible. I play FIFA 17 in 21/9 on PC with the highest graphic settings, and I can't wait to get FIFA on Switch, not to replace my PC version, but to play it twice as much.

Seeing as how 2K17 is one of the few "AAA"-esque games that run in native 4k on PS4 Pro, I'm hoping that they'll be able to get a scaled down version of the current gen game on the Switch.

Is that mode (looking at the back of your team) new to switch? I don't see it in any other console.

I tried to compare the graphics of that video we have. The crowd looks more like the crowd of the PS3 version. But it looks better than the PS3 version.

So, it's something in between the ps3 and ps4.

That's the standard "2k" camera angle.

Played on the GamePad, Fifa 13 on Wii U looked twice as good as on a TV. It will be even more true on Switch's screen. The smaller screen size hides aliasing & makes everything more detailed. If the port is decent, I'm sure it will turn heads played on the go.

I think you are probably an outlier. There is a huge audience for games like FIFA or NBA, that's not up for debate, but there is also a ton of PS4s and XboxOnes out in the wild, and they are only becoming more attractive as purchasing options. Like I said, these games are nice to have, especially for outliers like you describe, my initial post was in response to someone saying that Nintendo needs to advertise these games more to expand the userbase. I don't see that happeneing. I think they are getting the right amount of attention from Nintendo for what they are: complementary ports to fill out the release calander. I don't see Nintendo banking on PS4 or Xbox players picking up a Switch just to play slightly inferior versions of games they already have platforms for, because for the most part they won't.

I am sorry but what ? How do you even determine which game uses CPU power or not.
Sports games doesnt have expensive animation ? Thats literally reverse they have bunch of expensive animations for some alley-hop or something. Physics are big strong point of them so does AI. I dont get this comment at all.

Anecdotal but two friends are buying Switch and both mentioned how portable Fifa and 2K are main reasons for doing so. But who knows how indicative that is of the overall market.
