EDIT: And seeing that TMZ story, I predict Conan will leave. It's going to be impossible for him to stay on NBC at midnight and spin that into something less than embarassing.
If he leaves then everyone that just moved across the country for him will be out of a job in a city they are unfamiliar with. I don't think Conan has it in him to leave people in that situation, particularly when it's really just a matter of pride.

Jay and the old Tonight Show was the one show that they could actually count on to bring them in high ratings as the Tonight Show was almost always the #1 talk show at night.

If Leno is so great, why is he tanking in a timeslot with no competition? Is giving him half an hour at 11:30 PM really going to help matters?

While I like Leno better than Conan, Conan still should get his chance running the Tonight Show :/
I hope Leno declines the offers and trys to look good in this ordeal but I dont think that will happen after reading all this stuff

Leno is basically pulling the same amount of viewers that he did on the Tonight Show. That's really all he should've been expected to do.

I love how people keep saying Conan is getting "screwed" when he's getting the opportunity to keep the Tonight Show moniker and his gigantic contract.

That's not "screwed."

Also, for the millionth time, NBC was the catalyst in the whole deal. They pushed Jay out the door.
Yeah, seriously, what's with all the sympathy in here? It's a guy getting paid millions of dollars a year to talk to celebrities, and they're asking him to move up his show a half hour.

You are so so wrong. No one does good ratings when they first takeover an already established show. Matters are even worse for Conan because his bosses have shown no confidence by keeping Leno around.

If you worked at a company and they said, hey you're getting a promotion, but the person you're replacing is getting a brand new position that is almost exactly the same right down the hall. Do you think anyone in the office is going to take you seriously?

Going slightly OT here, but why is there so many late night talk shows on American tv? What's the facination? From what I gather based on the info in here, there are 3 of them on the same channel one after the other every weeknight, is that right? That just seems completely insane to me, especially when I come from a part of the world where there are only 1 or 2 on in the entire week across all channels. Have any of the networks ever tried putting on something else or did they fail really badly without them or something?

Does the world need this many chatshows?

(Monday to Friday)
NBC has:
Leno at 10
Conan at 11:30
Fallon at 12:30
Carson Daly at 1:30 (non-audience talk show, all interviews + music)

CBS has:
Letterman at 11:30
Ferguson at 12:30

ABC has:
Kimmel at 12

TBS has:
Lopez at 11pm

Fox has:
Wanda Sykes Saturday at 11pm

After reading all of this, the only thing I can say is WHERE'S KILBORN!!! I miss you most of all.

It's gonna be real interesting to see how Conan deals with the situation though. Whatever he does will be the right thing. But the only thing I do know is Jay needs to be doing something that isn't Late Night TV. Either do a show about cars or just sit down and enjoy retirement.

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think this is some sort of bitter power play by Leno. Leno could give a shit about the ratings for his show. He's made his name and his money. This is all NBC wanting to get out of the bomb that is Conan. The type of people that like Conan are the type of people that find Family Guy funny, which is to say, teens and slow adults. Conan's wackiness doesn't gel with the population at large.

Uh, wow. I'm 25 and I love Conan, think he's hilarious, and I'm most definitely not slow.

I also despise the Seth McFarlane humour, so fuck you and your generalizing ass.

Exactly where he should be--off television. That show was horrendous--his audience was always filled with fratboys, which was exactly who he appealed to.

My god, Kilborn was horrible. May as well have trotted out a wooden board onto the stage.

In fact, some nights, I think they did.

Well, that, and everyone thought his schtick was that of a fantastic asshole. Turns out it wasn't a schtick, and its not fantastic in real life.

I didn't know the Kilborn hate was that strong.

I thought he was cool though. I watched him a lot when I had this security gig way back when. CBS was the only station that came in clear in the guard shack so that's what I watched and I guess I just was into his direction I guess. But Ferguson has and is holding down that spot since his departure. And his audience is a lot more diverse that Kilborn's was and that is a major factor in his success on The Late Late Show and Bush putting him on didn't hurt either.

Ferguson is also a great interviewer. Maybe the best. He's relaxing to talk to, he plays off tiny bits, and if the conversation's any good, it usually goes over time.

The only thing really holding ferguson back is the occasionally poor material and the occasional overt grandstanding in the monologues.

One of the stupider things that has ever been said on this forum. :lol

what kind of retard shit is this?

Jay's monologue tonight taking on this story head-on was HILARIOUS.

No matter what you think of him, Leno is the best monologue guy late-night TV has ever seen. He's the only one who was a true stand-up comic before getting a talk show gig, and it shows.

YES!

The first sensible thing said in the thread.

Leno = better comedian & more mainstream personality.
Conan = better writer & crazier personality.

Have a show where they both work together. Leno does the monologues & Conan does the skits & ending with Leno interviewing the guests.

fuck no

Carson was the best at monologues. Letterman was great at it back in the day too.

But I will concede, as much as I hate Leno, that he's best at monologues right now. Conan and Letterman don't even try so it just comes across as forced. I don't laugh at Leno's monologues, but his energy and craft is better.

Where he got suspended for being an asshole.

I'm not saying he wasn't a massive ass, but he had his charm playing an ass. He sort of took David Spades character to a whole new level.

When he got his own show, I loved his Hollywood insider asshole persona that he played up. He was impossible to work with, most people didn't get that he was making fun of most of the people he interviewed... and the ratings were abysmal.

I still enjoyed it as a break from Conan's over the top antics on occasion.

Meh, Conan should just quite his job as host of the Tonight Show and become a writer for Leno. Seems like a good compromise.

Terrible idea.

I think they should put Conan back in New York and let him use the SNL writers pool the way he did on his old show. I think his leaving has hurt both SNL and his own show. Those two staffs (along with 30 Rock) were pretty interwoven.

Let Leno have the L.A. show. Put Conan back on in NYC 30 minutes later. Eventually transition Conan's show to the 10:30 slot and leave him in NYC.

I love all the hate Leno is getting from this thread, even getting death threats from some posters! :lol

Reminds me of his last show when he had Conan on & some jackoff off in the audience randomly yelled "CONAN RULEZ", in the middle of heart filled a speech Leno was giving about his time on the Tonight Show or such.

This is why Conan is a ratings bomb, tending exclusively to the college & internet crowd isn't a bankable or smart decision.

You sure it's not a ratings bomb because it has a terrible fucking lead-in (The Leno Show, which has worse demos than Conan's Tonight Show btw) and because the Leno show still poaches the top guests and undermined Conan's Tonight Show?

No one is forcing those celebrities to go on Leno. They just go to the more popular show & Leno is it.

Yeah, that 18-35 demographic is such an advertising wasteland.

Conan's interviews are immensely more entertaining than Leno's and they've always been the strong point of his shows.

So no.

That doesn't change the fact that they'd be on the Tonight Show otherwise. It's still undermines the Tonight's Show ratings and is a big factor in all of this. And Leno's show is barely more popular, a lot of nights it gets less viewers. That's why NBC is moving him back, because his primetime show is fucking ratings disaster.

...Yea conan should go to Fox. Though I do like the idea of him going back to NY and just coming on 30 minutes later.. but I think that is just a "hat in hand" position. He's being demoted right in front of the whole world.

Oh and anyone saying Leno's interviews, where he either flirts with female guest in a "gross grandpa" way or stilt conversation with flat jokes, are better than Conan's must be crazy.

Who's to say the big name celebrities wouldn't go to Letterman instead since he's doing better than either Leno or Conan now?
And another thing, what's with all this undermining crap? No one is not watching Conan because they watch Leno. They don't watch Conan because they don't want to.

Either way, Conan was not ready for the jump to the Tonight Show or needs a few more years to get an audience, which isn't looking like it might happen now.
