Bacon of Hope
Didnt want this to get lost in the fitness thread, sorry, but im in need of a good pull up bar for my room in that I just cant possibly make it to the gym everyday or whatever.

I see some that mount on the door frame on ebay but didnt want to buy one if they are shit, although I doubt much really goes into making a good pull up bar.

Im not looking to spend over 100 bucks on one.

Any ideas?

I bought mine from some sports store in the mall for $20. $100 on a pull up bar? You could probably get a pull up bar/dip station for that much.

The one I have costs ~$20, has two 'cups' that you screw into the wall, and place the bar in them. Not what I wanted really, although it worked really well. I wanted the one from back in the day. It was a pressure pole that could wedge itself into any doorway, not tools needed.

yeah the ones on ebay are the ones with the brackets or cups or w/e that drill into the doorjam... so that works pretty well?

I also am interested in a cheap pullup bar, but not one that screws into the walls or anything - I guess it would have to be a standalone station deal. Do those pressure poles really work? I'd think they'd get yanked right down.

They work OK. I sure wouldn't trust any of these that don't have brackets and just work on pressure alone.

yeah i mean im only like 145 lbs but it seems like the pressure ones would come down at some point...

you know i heard some people use thier door jams to do this shit but it seems hard as hell.. I cant get a grip on it...

I love pull up bars. My dad put one at our old house in the hallway from our rooms to the living room and kitchen. Five pull ups each time I passed put me into decent shape. I want a pull up bar again :(

I'm 170 and I use a pressure one. My brother who must weigh 220 used it just fine too. I don't know the name. Who would? They are all the same. Just buy whatever is at K-mart this isn't a major purchase.

I've been living in shitty apartments for 2 years with doorframes made of shit, hollow "fake" wood that is way too weak to ever support a pullup bar. Has anyone else run into this problem, and do you have any suggestions? I was thinking of bolting something into the bottom of the balcony above me, but I'm moving out in a month and don't really want to go to the trouble anymore, plus it's freezing outside 6 months out of the year.

Well, all I see at retail is the one that has the cups and requires a drill and puts holes in your shit. I need a link to the pressure pole one.

Seriously, what are you going to do with a pull-up bar? Hang your clothes on it?

All you'll do- that is if you're dedicated- is build up your lats while completely ignoring your other muscle groups. You may get a little delts and possibly some biceps but not much. I recommend you either go to the gym or walk to the nearest park with a jungle gym set-up.

That's what other exercises are for, genius. If you have a lat exercise that doesn't involve pull-ups or pull-downs, I'm all ears.

Every rowing exercise (barbell, dumbell, bent over, Pendlay, etc) and pullovers (db, bb).
