Need for Speed (2015, Full Reboot, PC/PS4/XB1, Ghost) Reveal Trailer

People referring to Underground as Need for Speed's "roots" just rubs me the wrong way.
Underground definitely isn't the "roots" of NFS. The "roots" of NFS lies in closed circuit racing with high end cars. However, I also think that Need for Speed went through an identity shift with the releases of Undercover and Most Wanted. While those games may not represent the "roots" of the series I feel like for most of the fans, including myself, that those games represent the identity of the series. For many people building your car up over the course of the game and making it your own is just as important as the racing itself, and the series has abandoned that identity for far too long now.

I don't see anyone hating on it so I don't understand why you would think you're the only one who liked it.

Didn't see anybody talking about how any of the cars sounded at all, which just strikes me as odd, that's all. Plus, I wasn't actually literally asking if I was the only one. It was more of a "who else thought the cars sounded great" thing.

Oh, sorry for the mis-understanding then. NFS games were always great when it came to engine sound, Most Wanted 2012 and Rivals sounded amazing.

That double meaning

Only roots worth taking a look at

Besides, the open world Underground still had circuits in it too

Guise... Plz, PLZ... Have a Speedbreak feature on this.

I don't care if you have to separate the online component to make it work, that interconnected world is bullshit anyway.

I'll love you long time if you bring that back.

and pursuit breaker aswell i loved those features in 2005s MW

Yep, those features were so genius that they made a whole game around them.
Split/second

Franklin from GTAV has speedbreaker basically

Played a little bit of Underground 1 and 2 today (PS2) just to re-familiarize myself with how they played and in my honest opinion U2 is the superior game. And yes that's the one with the open world. Apart from having the blacklists and taking place solely at night it felt fairly similar to Most Wanted 2005. It'll be interesting to see how much they stick or diverge away from that.

NFS MW 2005 Is the pinacle of action open world arcade racing and anyone thinking otherwise needs to see THIS and have a good sit down with Jesus, cause you been lost son...

Tuned up cars + legions of aggressive cops + speedbreak + pursuit breakers + ramps, jumps, shortcuts and straightaways = GOAT

cue angsty 2000's Linkin Park

Hype deflated

Hell fuckin yeah!
Damn that video is so good, thank you for sharing.

Im hyped, but very afraid.

Underground/Carbon and Wanted were one of my fav racing games ever, but times were dif. Im afraid most of the custom parts will be behind DLC paywalls and what not. Highly customizable games always leave me scared shitless, they can easily ruin a very capable game.

I share the same sentiments. As you can see I'm a big underground fan but times really have changed. I don't buy games day one anymore because dlc are announced before they're release so I just wait for game of the year editions. Seeing as this game promises customizations, I also think there will be a paywall. I'm not totally against it if I can earn in game currency in a decent rate (hey if u got money to burn go for it) but that seems unlikely seeing the trend like nba2k and others where earning currency is a pain.

The focus on story in a racing game is never a good thing. Has there ever been a racing game story that wasn't terrible?

Underground 1&2,

Most Wanted(the first one)

Tokyo Extreme Racer 3 to some extent even though you literally have to read up to understand the story of it.

They all have simple stories of you working from the bottom or your at the top and you get screwed over someway and have to work your way back up. Sometimes the stakes are high, sometimes they aren't...but truly it all depends what matters to you is what makes a story compelling or interesting.

Personally, I thought the NFS movie was decent and was better than the last few attempts of their stories in the franchise. Having a reason to race is always nice...whether its Vengeance or Glory, it needs to be done in a way that the player felt like all the build up was worth it...I think that was the biggest problem with Carbon was that it lost Cross and picked up a shitty Villain to replace him.....you don't know how bad I wanted to knock Cross's Corvette off a cliff...especially after all the stuff you go through in Most Wanted.

my 2 cents.

I used to be so into this franchise back during the days of NFS Underground and Most Wanted. I really hope this is as fun as those games.

Please Ghost games. Add in a cockpit incar view. Make the physics more on the sim - realism side. Add in real brand names - HKS, GReddy etc.. and I thin we can all agree we will be in heaven.

Holy shit, saying this thread got derailed for two pages is an understatement.

We had someone looking for Beetle Adventure Racing gameplay in NFS, which is patentely absurd. BAR was a fantastic game, but NFS has never been that detached from reality, despite its frequent jumps.

Then there's the thread-wide complaints about open-world, and 'handcrafted' tracks. Do people legitimately think the game is going to be designed as a city first and foremost, without any attention to potential race tracks? That's absurd. Instead of having 20 disjointed maps like this:
Them compile them, overlapping to some extent, into an open world engine, and interconnect all of them via a cityscape and rural surroundings, creating this:

NFS Underground 2 was open world, but the tracks felt identical to NFS:U, they weren't ambiguous, due to the gigantic neon signs blocking drivers from the rest of the world and still allowing for alternate paths and shortcuts. With the rest of the world inaccessible, you're left with the same kind of "corridor tracks" that people claim are the superior and different.

And people complaining about having to drive to their races. Many open world racing games have allowed you to initiate races from within the menu - the exact same way you would in a disjointed track-based game. I guarantee that feature will be in this game, as it was in the last open world NFS game. Aside from being a bizarre complaint, it's not even accurate or relevant.

I'm going to ask onle for ONE thing for this game: 60fps. Downgrade whatever visuals you have if you have to.

I don't think there's been a single NFS game that runs at 60fps on consoles. Driveclub isn't. Split/Second isn't. Forza Horizon games aren't. They're all still amazingly fun games.

The GOAT of NFS. U1 and U2 were fantastic racing games. Utterly amazing but they lacked the core part that makes NFS the besst that it is. Cop chases. The thrill they bring. The goddamn thrill man!

The one thing that set NFS apart from any other racers out there. The soul of the series. Hnnnng. Make sure that you do the cops like MW1 Ghost. Not like Rivals.

My wishlist for customization:
1- Let us choose individual bumpers and side skirts of the car, not a body kit that changes the bumpers and such completely
2- But also give us the option for full body kits why not :p
2- Hoods
3- Spoilers
4- Side view mirrors
5- Roof (roof scoops, carbon roofs, glass roofs etc)
6- Tail and head lights
7- Exhausts
8- Wider fenders on top of our chosen parts
9- Windows tint (gotta have it always black)
10- Neons for those who like it but I don't find it good looking now, maybe when I was 7
11- Let us choose precisely the size and the width of the wheel so the car will have the perfect fitment
12- I don't expect this to happen but I would really like the engine bay of the car to change depending on the upgrades

And for a completely unrealistic expectation, interior customization, seats, steering wheel, shift knob, upholstery etc etc
I didn't mention livery editor because that's pretty obvious that will be included

Yes, yes, yes. Individually applicable kit parts. All I ask for. I hate being forced to use pre-made kits.

Yeah well, if implemented correctly the police will be fun. Hopefully there will also be a toggle to turn it off during free roaming.
underground 2 was also the first nfs game I ever played. I guess that, yeah, if there is the option to turn them off then I would be fine with it.

For those who don't know, Need for Speed: Most Wanted '05 is actually available on the EU PSN as a PS2 Classic (one of the few EA games/games with licensed soundtracks that is).

I'm going to guess, that as usual, damage to cars during a race won't affect performance? it's one thing I still want to see (besides proper in-car/cockpit view)

There need to be a thread for explaining "in-game" and the newly coined "in-engine" (Star Wars Battlefront).

I thought "in-game" meant "in-engine". To a casual gamer it might be a "CGI trailer"

Just looked and couldn't find it ? Only the new Most Wanted.
Huh, I bought it very recently from the UK Store, but I've just looked too and it's definitely not there - apologies guys, looks like it was pulled somewhere along the line :(

In-engine is not new, has been used for ages man. Look it up.

are young'ins trying to rewrite history in this thread?

NFS's roots are Road and Track's The Need For Speed. (or older Test Drive games)

Open world NFS roots are from Midnight Club Racing and its sequals.

Edit-this is what Need For Speed was about.

https://youtu.be/ynbUtfGxVOk

before we had Wikipedia, we had Need For Speed teaching us about the history of the cars, with great looking photos, and SICK videos.

then you couldn't wait till get on the track with your favorite.

If it looks like this and the gameplay is good. This will be my first NFS since NFS Porsche. But on the other hand its EA. Will not preorder.

I feel old for saying this but Need for Speed Porsche was hands down the best Need for Speed. It isn't even close.

What was so great about NFS Porsche compared to Hot Pursuit or the other ones? I never liked it that much because it only had Porsches, I want some diversity in cars.
