In 2020 I was overwhelmed with childlike excitement to hear that Criterion games was making a new game for the first time in almost a decade(and now, a full decade). Burnout Paradise is one of my GOATs, and despite some issues, I had tons of fun with their PS3 NFS titles as well. Been waiting so long to hear/see what this new game would be about but EA was so stingy about details, and tortured me more by delaying it a year because of effing 2042. So excited to wake up Tuesday morning to try out Criterion's grand return...
Dialogue is far worse than the Ghost games all put together, the anime effects just feel pasted on top of realistic graphics, it clashes. But to the real issues, I cannot stand playing this game.
Cars are responsive but cornering is weird, no matter what I slip out and lose speed. The burst nitro is weird you gotta build it up by driving fancy but you can't bank it for later and it doesn't even feel that helpful when you do use it. Progression while I respect they were trying to make you feel like a new racer, is a tedious and soulless grind. You cannot win the buy-in races and end up losing money or barely breaking even, and free races aren't any easier and have much lower payouts anyway. Even once I tediously earned some upgrades for my car, nothing became easier, 5th place if i'm lucky. I even dropped to relaxed difficulty and still could not finish higher. FULL DISCLOSURE: Never been great at any driving games, due to my disease I have slow reaction times and these types of games are physically demanding for me. BUT with some help from my Cronus, I was able to beat Carbon, The Run, Payback, and Heat, and I liked them all. Couldn't complete HP 2010 or MW 2012, but they are still fun to just play for me. Difficulty aside, something about this game is just inherently not fun to just play for me. I think part of it is the pacing, forced to the next day every time you return to the garage, I like making my own pace, this game kinda pushes you forward even if your not ready.
I even restarted the game with a different car thinking my first car, the subaru was shit, and I went for the eclipse, and it wasn't any better. Well it was slightly better to drive but I didn't do any better.
I uninstalled the trial last night, I just don't like it and I feel like there's something in the water because I see glowing positivity on social media. Most people are defending the game's high difficulty saying your supposed to grind out the low positions for small amounts of cash to slowly upgrade. That's fine, but for me I wasn't breaking even on most races or just barely making $500.
This one just doesn't seem to be for me chief, but make no mistake, I'm not a salty troll. I'm happy a lot of people seem to love it, that's what it's all about, more power to em.
