Need good/super cheap OLD fps on steam.

Timedog

good credit (by proxy)
So I've always hated mouse and keyboard controls for FPS' but I've never sat down and finished an entire game. I need something dirt cheap that I can buy off of steam to finish an entire game and see if I can get used to it/stomach it. I need it to be old so I can get it for like under 10 bucks.

I already have orange box on 360, so I'm not interested in that at all. I've pretty much missed out on every awesome PC FPS ever made because of my disdain.

Now before PC elite nerd race shits up the thread whining about how mouse+kb is inherently better and my current opinion about it sucks, I'M TRYING LEGITIMATELY TRYING TO GET USED TO PC CONTROLS since most people think they're better. I would love to be able to play new PC FPS games.

Thanks sOoOoOoOoOo much, Ted.

Why not try playing Quake Live? Its free and if you can master the controls in that game, you'll cope with anything else just fine.

Play with bots to begin with.

Half-life

I was in your same situation about 5 years ago. Loved Goldeneye/Perfect Dark/TimeSplitters, couldn't do shit with a mouse/keyboard. I downloaded Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, a free game, and 500 hours of playing time later I couldn't ever go back to console FPS. Despite spending 90% of my gaming time on consoles I pass on every console exclusive FPS and only play FPS games on PC because of how frustrating I find using controllers for them now.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II $5 on steam now.

-or-

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast for $10 (I enjoyed this one more than the first).

You're welcome.

I was thinking of mentioning that game (Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory), since it's probably my favorite free multiplayer game ever. It would almost rival TF2 in terms of team gameplay, or maybe that's just my fond memories. I haven't played in a long time.

The free game is multiplayer only, though, and I don't know how many people still play it (plus it has that thing where you can shoot someone in the head like half a mile away with a machine gun, depending on the mod, which you may or may not like).

Holy shit first time I ever get confused with a thread :lol :lol

Get Unreal Tournament 1 or Half Life 1!

Painkiller is for seasoned M&KB users.

Half-Life is pretty forgiving as far as reaction speeds go.

I'd go with Deus Ex. Not only is it an amazing game, but it has lots of exploration and places without frantic action so you can really adjust yourself to the controls. It also has jumping up on boxes, climbing ladders, climbing in vents, etc, so you can get a feel for lots of different things using KB/Mouse.

painkiller looks like if a late 80's early 90's metalhead tried to make a video game. I might get that.

yeah Painkiller is fun, get it.

but Quake Live is FREE and awesome. dont pussyfoot around, put your m/kb skills to the test and get it as well.

Do it, it's pure bang bang fun shooty fps. As mentioned, the boss battles are pure epic.

Painkiller is awesome, but I it might get a little fast paced/difficult for someone just starting out on a mouse + kb

Half-Life is a great choice.

I'm trying to get used to using a controller to play first person shooters, so I feel ya.

Nah, it really is just that good.

Painkiller on low difficulties is fairly lenient, and unlike most games you're never left with a weak weapon. I'd consider it the best game for teaching simple movement and aiming skills that isn't named Serious Sam.

First I need to make sure you are using WASD. Lots of people think arrow keys are a less frustrating way to start (I did for a year) but truth is arrow keys are vastly inferior to WASD. Also low sensitivity is better for a mouse instead of higher sensitivity you want in controllers. Not so low that you can't turn and face behind you in one motion, but really no lower then that. As your wrist gets more and more familiar with mouse movement you will need less and less sensitivity to do a 180 degree turn and you should lower your sensitivity accordingly. Lower sensitivity=better accuracy.

The key here is to get good enough to spin a 180 in 1 motion of the mouse while keeping the crosshair level. It You tend to dip the mouse when you turn when you aren't used to it.

If you give it a chance and stick with it a good single player FPS should get you good enough to enjoy M/KB and feel that it is more comfortable then a controller within just a couple of weeks. But a multi-player FPS is how you will get good.

I started with Half-Life and immediately could understand why a mouse was better for aiming. For the first few weeks i had a habit of letting my crosshairs "drift down" when i was moving forward until i was staring at the ground and had to stop and readjust my aim. Eventually i got used to adjusting my aim as I moved.

After playing CS for a month or so I started to actually notice myself get better in spurts. It's an incredibly rewarding feeling. You will probably be better with a M/KB than a controller within a month or two but you will still get better and faster with the M/KB in spurts for the next year or so. Everytime you notice that you are faster than before it feels awesome.

Going back to my second paragraph is what the true goal of using a mouse comes down to. You get so used to the smooth fluid motion, you get so used to the mouse sensitivity that fits you best, the eventually you don't think about aiming at anything. You just flick your wrist at someone head and click Mouse1 at just the right time and it all just works.

QL ~> only answer.

You'll get raped by the community though, get acquainted to how frantic it is by shooting bots, yeah.

the graphics in quake live rule. i picked the guy with america plastered all over him. he looks really rough.

If the controls give you trouble, try experimenting various configs. I still can't/won't use wasd.

This. I still use cursor keys, and like to think I do okay.

Although protip for all you WASD advocates, EDSF is inherently better as you gain quick QAZ binds in addition to TGB

I know people who play esdf because of internationalization (y<->z), ijkl, cursor keys and numblock.

I prefer wasd, but what counts is that you're feeling comfortable.

painkiller is pretty dang sweet. These graphics are really rockin.

still don't like the control scheme as much as controller but I can see how it'd be more accurate.

I really love these graphics. I think my graphics card wont do oversampling/AA though (are those 2 the same thing?). On one game I set it up 16x and saw no difference (Civ IV), and on painkiller I set it to 5x and saw no difference. Also when I mess with the setting of any of my games nothing changes. Civ IV looks like garbage. Company of heroes looks kind of garbagey too. I want some massive AA if i'm gonna play old games.

I have a 4870 by the way.

Half-Life is the best in my opinion. There are plenty of enemy types of varying sizes with different movement patterns and there are also plenty of parts where you have to manipulate objects without actually shooting things. Some of the levels can be quite vertical as well. I think it would be a great game for mouse look "training".

wasd >>>>>>>>>>> everything else

I can't just press w or s, so I can't move forward/backward accurately at all! But the point was to tell the OP that he shouldn't feel "bound" by wasd if he is having trouble.
