Need Help Freeing up space for a launch day 60 gig PS3

I deleted everything i could think of and barring kb sized gamesaves, i can only seem to access 15gb of my 60 gig fatty..outside of game data which i cleanse regularly, what else could be taking up so much space?

Thanks in advance.
I ended up backing up and reformating.

Everything was the same as it was before i restored, down to my bookmarks.

But now i have 47 gb

I am not quite sure why it is only giving you 15GB. I'd back the PS3 up and then reformat it, that should wipe the hard drive clean.
In case you don't want to do something quite as drastic, I'd suggest plugging in an external HDD.

Odd. I remember when I first got my 60 GB, it had 55 free out of the box. I don't remember the OS taking up any more space, though PS Home sure did. I barely ever used it and it ended up taking ~20 GB by the time I deleted it. I don't have a PS3 near at the moment, but a good idea might just be to see if your game data totals up to the missing space. I only have 4 games that use the HDD, but they take up ~4 GB each.

The OS is strange though. On my new 500 GB model, it only had about 430 GB usable. If all else fails and you want that space, you could backup everything and reformat the drive in a Windows PC under FAT32. That should get rid of anything hiding on it.

Is that going to kill my bookmarks on my browsers? :(
Are you sure you got the folder that contains DLC and installs? It's like...Game Data Utility, I think.
yeah all wiped clean :(

Game Data Ultility, Music, Videos, and demos. If it's formatted, it'll be at 55GB.

OS doesn't take that much. It's just that we measure everything in decimal and computers measure in binary. So 1,000 = 1,024 for them. Now stretch it over several GB's and you'll see the difference when plugging in a 500GB HDD. OS doesn't take up 70GB. It's just how it's measured. Manufacturers measure HD space in decimals btw. My bad, it's not in hex.

Game install data?

OS is nowhere near 40gb! Lol. There are 20gb PS3's!
Eh, I'm just guessing.

Really? i remember having the majority of my harddrive to waste of games and movies, has the OS been growing? I think this might be somewhat true -__-

yeah i keep calling that game data, but yeah, all gone.

Not sure, again, just guessing. Don't see anything else that it could be.

I believe it'll be better to just upgrade the hard drive. $50 will give you a decent 500GB HDD.

How do you get that cheap screw off? The thing stripped like it was made of pure sodium when I tried to upgrade the HDD. 60GB HD's still firmly screwed in.

Right, and that's why I'm also curious. If I calculated right, 500GB in decimal should be ~488 (nope, 465) in hex. Not sure where the other 53GB went.

Edit: Thanks for the handy calculator, Zero!

The OS reserves a portion of the HDD for something (I wanna say cache, but to be honest I have no idea). Instead of using a fixed amount, it uses a %. It isn't really noticeable if your HDD is small, but once you start getting into the 200GB+ range it starts to get annoying.

Looks like reformatting is the way to to go -__-
Was going to back up trophys, but **** this wait.
Might as well try safe mode before reformatting.

Try the Restore File System (I think this just checks for corrupt files, but I'm not 100% so backup before doing it) and the Database option (this one will delete custom tags for music, videos, folder names, etc..) .

I'll try both! You rule.

Why don't you get a larger hard drive?

edit: just read up - still think you should get a new drive if the ps3 fat still works.
