NeoGAF Candy Swap - July '09

I think receipts will take the fun out of it a little bit :-/ Also, hardly any places I bought my candy from would give a receipt.

Maybe have a rating of your swap, so from now on the person that sent under the amount, will have to be paired with someone with a similar low rating to take part in the next swap (or someone willing to go with someone who has a low rating)

To be honest, I sent a little less than what my paring sent me, but it was only when I received his parcel I realised this. I did spend what we agreed, but pricing and conversion rates, its never gonna be exact.

I understand it not being exactly the same, that's fine by me.

But we agreed on 20 USD and I got like five dollars worth of candy...

The rating system seems like it could have its flaws, and complicate things much more then it needs to be.

I agree with elseanio regarding the receipts. It kind of spoils the fun, and I don't like a partner having to prove to me how much he spent...I'm able to look and tell whether there's x amount in value, I trust GAF.

But I don't think it should be deterred as an OPTION for traders to use. Perhaps for the next sign-up, let everyone include if they want receipts required or not, then pair those who want receipts together (and if there's one lone person left, perhaps someone who said no will agree to do it to make things easier). Though considering how many options you have to consider already, that may make even more of a mess out of things. Bad idea, perhaps.

I'm just not sure if required receipts would have prevented Devin Olsen's problem with his partner. I guess the guy would have bought more knowing he was held to that much of a limit, but he knew he was totally underspending their limit anyway, and that didn't stop him. So it could function as a deterrent, but it's not foolproof. I'd prefer it not to be required, but I'd hate for someone like Devin Olsen to not feel comfortable trading anymore. Tough call.

I received my package from MiloFoxburr on Monday afternoon, but due to problems at the office I was not able to open it until last night.

He was nice enough to enclose a packing list with a photo of the candy:

Excellent selection. I have found several that I really like including Penguin chocolate bakes and Timeout.

I must say that the Burger Bites (beef flavored potato chips) were very strange but grew on me. Thank you very much for the box.

Oh, and my daughter immediately took the leprechaun for herself.

I wouldn't be willing to swap if it went down to receipts and pricing. I think that's a bit too far and would ruin the fun, but I'll leave it up to the vote.

Some people have vastly higher priced shipping costs- does that give them justification for shipping less candy once we start boiling it down to how much we spent?

I don't think shipping should count at all... We agreed on a 20 USD limit for CANDY... Shipping is a whole separate issue.

If you and your partner agree on a '50 dollar shipping and candy' budget then that is one thing. But if you say you'll spend 20 dollars on candy, then ship 20 dollars in candy.

I can agree with this. You should spend on candy what you agree to spend on candy. It looks like this guy took the "$20" and including shipping costs in what he sent. That would be my guess anyway.

Jbbb glad you like the candy!! I including the candy corn because I read an article about "american things you will miss in Brazil" and candy corn was like #1 :lol :lol

can't wait to get my candy!!!!

I wasn't in on it this time, but I have done two and hope to join next and I agree that documenting the process with receipts and such is a little unnecessary, and it would create a mess for me since I buy all over the place.

Showing some trust in your fellow man is integral to the anti-misanthropic core of this entire thing. :)

got my candy from woodesey1982!!!!! wow you got it right with the chewy stuff. Its all sooo goood!! (Maoams Maoams Maoams!!!!)
Refreshers are so good too!

And the Kinder egg from the looks of it :lol

Starting to get worried about my package. I it was supposed to get there in a week, and it's been a week and a half. DieselRainbow, you out there?

its been 9 days since cloudwalking shipped my candy, and it should take 6-10 days yet my box only took like 3 days to get to her.

I hope those Customs Nazis don't take any out of the box!

ah, Kindereggs are amazing. I remember back in the day they had a line of collectible turtle figures in them. I wish I still had my collection :(

Only if you swap. :D

Devin Olsen said:
Question back to you, how often are these swaps? From what I can tell they are every 2-3 months? Is it some sort of set in stone schedule, or just when you feel like it?

It's a mix of both. I want everyones packages to get to their destinations from the previous swap, but I also have to get things organized in my life to have some extra time to match everyone up and to be able to monitor the thread closely.

The candy price that partners agree on is completely separate from the shipping costs. So, if two partners decided to have a 20$ price cap then they both must buy 20$ (Or a close currency conversion of that.) worth of candy. Or they could choose a weight cap instead. I paid 50$+ on my shipping not counting the candy I bought while my partner ended up having to pay much more. I really wish he didn't have to, but I really appreciate him doing so.

It looks like majority seems against the receipt idea. That's perfectly fine, which is why I asked.

Believe me, I am not trying to treat anyone as criminals. I am trying to make the most of the swap that I can in the most efficient way possible. Obviously, I've had to implement controls and rules to help ensure that users will be faithful. But, I don't want to complicate things too much and push away people who really want to swap.

The more and more I do this, the more complicated it becomes due to keeping tabs on the previous swaps and making sure users aren't getting matched up with a country they have already swapped with. On top of many other things which all have to be organized and matched-up by hand. So, a rating system would be far too much to undertake for one person. Although, it is a very nice idea.

It's a very tough call and I am always trying to think of ways to make the swap better. Technically, the easiest way to handle all of the data would be to build a web application to handle registrations and matching automatically. But, once again, working on that alone could take a LONG time.

Maybe the operation of the swap needs to be remodelled. If any of you have any ideas, please share them!

Got my package from olore from Sweden! (Actually it arrived Monday, but they had to redeliver since they didn't bother ringing the doorbell.)

I'm perfectly fine with sending the receipts, I don't really see how it would spoil the fun as they would get the receipt with the package anyway at the same time.

Just got my box from Banzaiaap in the Netherlands. Cheap camera phone is all I have so sorry about the image quality.

What could be in inside?
sspx0044.jpg

Before the carnage began. There are some wafer things that are awesome in here. Also strawberry, peach and banana candies. Some licorice for the girlfriend.

Looks like sprinkles for ice cream but it goes on bread? Taste like pudding and they are soft. Good stuff, can't wait to try it on a slice.
sspx0048r.jpg

What in the world? People in the Netherlands eat sticks?? After an internet search, we decided to chew on them instead of rubbing them together to make fire and while I can't really describe it, it wasn't bad at all. Close to ginger root maybe? I dunno. They are really hard. My girlfriend says they are good as medicine and as tea.
sspx0050.jpg

This was a great experience and a lot of fun. Thanks again Banzaiaap and tmaynard.

Hope you get your package from me soon if you haven't already.

we are also a bit worried. but sending shit internationally from here is notoriously expensive and slow. i recently sent some chocolate to the west coast and it took 2 weeks to get there :/

Just got my package today!

Looking forward to trying it. My partner said he'd send me out another box because I sent more than him - what a legend!

A bit late. I'm sorry for that, but my candy is out the door.
Shipment wasn't that bad: 24 euro's. I've could have done cheaper but then i didn't have a track and trace code ^^

So permutated I hope you will enjoy your candy and i'll PM you the T&T code.

Thank you so much tmaynard, you're the best!! That toothbrush is gonna come in handy after all that. Didn't try anything yet (I'm in awe just on the sight alone..), I'll post impressions later.

edit: Oh, and that write-up was GREAT! Thanks a lot for that too! I can write you one too, but if you have already tasted everything, I guess it won't be that much fun. But let me know if you want one and I'll write it.

You're very welcome! Glad to see that the package made it there safely!

Look forward to hearing what you think about the candy. I've almost tried all of yours, so I'll be doing an opinion post soon.

I forced all of my co-workers to try the Salmiakki... 2 out of 10 people enjoyed it. Licorice is a bit rough for most Americans. :lol

One person said it was almost like eating prank candy. :lol

My boss really enjoyed it though!

You guys are brave people. Real licorice literally makes me puke :( I don't know what it is about it but my stomach just says "No Sir".

Hahah, that's awesome. Though I hope I didn't send too much salmiakki / licorice stuff. Can't wait to read the detailed impressions :D

I think you balanced the variety very well.

The salmiakki in the little boxes had a much stronger salt kick than the others so that's the one I made everyone try.:lol

The funny thing is, someone must've liked it because the box is empty. Also, as predicted, the huge chocolate bar was gone within an hour.

Ok, good to hear.

Yeah, Finnish chocolate is great. I thought you and your co-workers would like it.

Glad that you got the package sonorrat. Some of the chocolates seems melted? The blue Fazer for example? Please post your impressions of the candy when you get a chance.
Your package awaits at my local postoffice, will get it either tomorrow or during the weekend.

Thanks to tmaynard for organizing this! :D

Oh, and since that thread is closed... Is the Homeless-age thread the greatest ever or what?

GAF, you rule

OMG. These Butterfingers are probably the best tasting candy I've ever eaten even though it feels like me teeth will fall out. :lol

I got home from vacation yesterday and the stuff from babyhack was waiting for me. I'll take pics when I get home from work tonight.

Or just poured it down your throat from the pack :lol

I think that's why they called it Mystery White - they had this flavor and couldn't come up with what to call it. It's, um, white. :lol

Glad you enjoy and everything go there in good shape. I'll post when your box arrives - the kids (and me!) are pretty excited. :D

So as I'm opening my package from Cloudwalking me and my brothers and his friends are digging into the packaging and start trying out stuff when I start feeling like I forgot something...

Oh crap the camera!

So its a bit messy but its my way of showing how eager and how much I enjoyed the stuff! Thanks Cloudwalking, really great stuff you sent!

The spread:

Some really good caramel stuff! It's so rich I can only eat two or three and I have to stop but its soooo good!

Very interesting Lindt candy. I'm glad you sent two boxes of Lindt chocolates, I remember when I was in Switzerland for two days and I went to a super market and bought some, good stuff!
3821605688_553ef3627e_o.jpg

I just hope you guys enjoyed the stuff I sent as much as I will enjoy yours.

awesome. glad it finally arrived! i would have helped picking out the candy/chocolate, as i usually do, but unfortunately i was out of town for a few days when it all went down. that said, cloudwalking picked some excellent stuff, especially the "rahmtäfeli" and the "risoletto"; they're among my favorites. of course if i would have had my way you would have ONLY gotten swiss stuff :P (although i think those italian cookies are alright)

yeah i'm really glad it all got there too. looks like stuff didn't melt much either, or at least i hope the melting was minimal :)

the lindt chocolates are my favourites too, i usually buy a bar of lindt at least once a week. don't be afraid to try the chili one, even if you are afraid of dark chocolate... it's AMAZING. i see the tiramisu lindt bar isn't pictured, did you eat that one up already? ;) it's also really tasty.

rahmtäfeli are something really swiss and i bought those ones from a specialty store in zürich, i tried them before buying and was really impressed with how they tasted. some of the better rahmtäfeli i've ever had. but yeah, they are reeeeeeeally rich!

eveything in the package is of swiss orgin, except the happy cola (germany) and the cookies (italy). i also considered sending just swiss stuff but thought it might be fun to throw in some stuff from our neighbours, too :)

I just tried some of that Chili Lindt, really interesting.

The spice doesnt kick in for a bit and as you eat more it builds up.

Our candy came yesterday. Needless to say, the kids were stoked to open it up.

The kids really like the Jelly Babies, and I naturally am grateful - oh so grateful - for the big bags of Haribo gummis. It's like mana from heaven. Thanks, DieselRainbow. Perfect mix, perfect timing, great stuff. :D

Yay. Glad you recieved the box ok! It's being a pleasure trading with you! Tried those Mike & Ikes last night, so so good! Cheers again Ghaleon! :D
