1) Shame
2) The Tree of Life
3) Love Exposure
4) Weekend
5) The Muppets
6) Cave of Forgotten Dreams 3D
7) Jane Eyre
8) Rango
9) Winnie the Pooh
10) Drive Angry 3D

Drive might be on here but it's going to win in a landslide anyway, so, no point. I probably won't be able to see most of the movies I wanted to see until, like, May. C'est la vie.

Oh jeez I've only seen 3 of those movies. Such a lazy film year for me. Shame/Weekend are at the top of my must see list.

Now I'm really pissed that I missed Drive Angry 3D during its cinema run, why would I ever wanna miss a new Nic Cage movie?

I missed a lot of the Best Picture contenders.

1. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
2. Drive
3. Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol
4. Midnight In Paris
5. 50/50

8. Moneyball
9. Straw Dogs (never saw the original, but thought this was really good on its own)
10. Contagion

Just a few disappointments

Cajole, I don't think you need to worry about removing the restriction, which as is is already really low. I can't imagine even the most film-adverse person that would for some reason want to participate in end of the year voting not seeing The Hobbit, Prometheus, and any of the numerous comicbook movies coming out later this year.

Since I saw the most new movies in theatres in any year so far in my life, and a good number of them ones I think deserve even some small mention, I made a lengthier list. Comparing some of these is insane, but limiting it to 10 doesn't really reflect how rich a year it was in film. Of course, the great thing about this is that I'm sure swoon, Grimmy, or Cosmic Bus could scoff at 3/4 of the titles on here and have an entirely different list of movies well worth watching (if not now then in a couple years when some of the best of the year have made it to New York and then DVD.) Saying there were no or even not very many good movies in any given year says as much as saying there weren't any bad movies made in the past year. If you're saying that, it's only because you haven't seen them. I'll never see all the great movies from this or any other year.

01. This Is Not a Film

05. 50/50

4. Drive
5. Midnight in Paris
6. The Tree of Life
7. Senna
8. Attack the Block

I feel like I should provide some commentary or thoughts because I do appreciate the posts that do, but I'm a bit preoccupied at the moment.

Only a few more hours guys! I'll try to get the results thread up sometime tomorrow morning or afternoon.

Here I come, my top 7 picks. Note: Since the voting is only till the 25th, I've missed a couple films, hence I can't make a final top 7 list, as I'd like.

1. The tree of Life - Such a hard one for me. I enjoyed Drive a bit more, yet this film will probably stand the test of time and to a degree has had the bigger impact with me.

2. Drive

3. A separation

4. Shame

6. X-men the first class

7. Rango

1. Drive
2. Skin I Live in
3. Hobo With a Shotgun

6. Drive Angry
7. The Adventures of Tintin
8. Winnie the Pooh
9. 30 Minutes or Less
10. Crazy, Stupid, Love

I really didn't want to order these. I just sort of threw my top 10 in any old order.

1. Drive
2. 50/50
3. Shame
4. The Interrupters
5. Tin Tin

rather disappointing that none of these were nominated for best picture. then again, the oscars never have been very good at picking good movies. I also hope this gets in within the deadline.

If it makes you feel any better, I have been pooping dark matter since 17 minutes before the big bang, so I can see where the confusion would come from.
lol, I literally rewatched that episode an hour ago.

Kind of a shit year on the whole, I agree. Have you seen Hunger? That McQueen/Fassbender combo is killer.

Not yet! Another one I've been meaning to catch.

National Treasure 2 is actually the last Nic Cage movie I saw at the cinemas, I suck, I know. Been missing so many classics.

I'm glad I even watched Weekend because I was terrified it would be one of those awful mumblecore indie romance shakycam things, but no, it was actually really well-written, well-photographed, well-acted, sweet & genuine.

And yeah, Drive Angry was great fun. Obviously I make it a point to see every new Nic Cage movie in theaters (IN 3D) because you never know when you'll miss out on magic!
Not really. Hello National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets.
DVD release in December, too. Love Exposure totally counts, ridiculously late release and all!
Hunger was really good, but I prefer Shame over it. Mainly because of the content.

Wish I had been able to see more movies, definetly missed some but can always watch them later regardless of making lists :)

Surprised to see Hugo on so many peoples list. I thought it was terrible, bored me to tears, plus it was just stupid.

Just saw My Week With Marilyn.

I do think Williams deserves the Oscar, despite not thinking much of the film. It was a hard decision, since Rooney Mara was fucking fantastic in a fantastic film. But Williams just disappeared into the role.

The old dude was a drama queen. "Oh, I'm not gonna make movies anymore, all these drawings are too painful, blah, blah, etc."

I dunno, I just didn't like it. Who gives a shit about movies in the scheme of things and I never did understand the significance of the automaton and what purpose it served. I thought it was one of the weakest films ever made by Scorsese.

the most confusing part of the post is calling Hugo stupid while implying that Red State is smart

I wouldn't say Red State was smart, but it did entertain me and had a lot of WTF moments. Kept me on the edge of my seat, unlike Hugo, which was totally cliche and predictable. But again, just my opinion, if you enjoyed it, more power to you.

i don't understand the love for Hugo at all. the best way i've heard it described is "saccharine, contrived and predictable.'

definitely some nice cinematography and good use of 3D though.

Hugo is really a good movie for film nerds. If you don't have some interest in or understanding of the history of film, I don't think there's much you'll take out of it. Hugo perfectly describes the passion some people feel when they first fall in love with film and the joy they derive from it. I didn't totally love it, but those cinephile bits are fantastic.

Who gives a shit about movies? Uh, a lot of people. What an utterly silly statement.
For the record, I didn't even adore Hugo. It was a bit arduously paced and the 3D was pointless and distracting. But your reasons for disliking it seem...disingenuous.

I think it works on this level, but I also think Hugo makes a good effort to be about more than simply film. To me it became more about how being creative can be so fulfilling and how art can be life-affirming.

Oh yeah, I don't mean to sell the movie short with my previous comment, but I think people who share that common interest with Scorsese (love for film) will find it much easier to enjoy.

I didn't read much about Hugo, so I didn't know how it was gonna turn out, but I took the major themes, in he second half atleast, to be some really powerful stuff about what it is to be young and accepting that you're growing old. It can sappy if you're not along for the ride, but why resist? The film was overwhelming during those parts to mme. I would've thought even higher of the film if it didn't feel like the second half was trojan horse'd in from the first half though. Which is to say, "hey, you got a really great movie in the middle of my real good movie, what the hell, Scorcese."

Krev, you should have pretended Love Exposure was released in Aus last year and voted for it with me!

Well actually now that I think about it I've no idea when or if it was released there since it's been around since 2008ish.
2010. :(
I would have voted for it.

And The Muppets and Weekend too, maybe, but they were released last month in these parts.

Damn, I'm too late. Oh well I guess

Go ahead and post it (and anyone else who missed the deadline). I'm finishing up the tallying now, so you have a tiny bit of time left.

Also, Sculli, you're lucky I randomly went back to check if I somehow missed any votes for A Dangerous Method as it only appeared on my excel spreadsheet now. I wouldn't have noticed your edited list otherwise.

Edit: Ok, I'm done. Will post the results thread in a bit. I kinda got sucked into a Commando-Terminator combo on TV.
