NeoGAF Movies of the Year 2012 Voting Thread

Yeah, I honestly just got fairly lucky this year with local releases, and streaming services have greatly expanded their access to new, smaller releases - or maybe I've just been paying more attention. I really liked The Loneliest Planet, but it's very much in the vein of, say, Gus van Sant, and I could see it being very irritating if one didn't have the patience for it.

I missed Not Fade Away because of weird showing times (once per day at 2150? Yeah fuck you too!) but I'm still really interested in it because of Chase.

Monterey! Certainly worse than SF and LA for movies in this state, but I ain't complaining.

There's some decent theaters in Santa Cruz for limited/independent releases. The Nickelodeon and Del Mar specifically.

I won't be making my list until I catch up on a few things this weekend. However, I can safely say that Cloud Atlas and John Carter will make my list. You have my sword Sculli.

My list at the moment (edited once):

1. Zero Dark Thirty
2. Moonrise Kingdom
3. Killer Joe
4. The Punk Syndrome (A Finnish documentary about an awesome punk band by four mentally handicapped guys. Subtitled trailer)
5. Beasts of the Southern Wild
6. Into the Abyss
7. Faust
8. Young Adult
9. I Wish
10. Skyfall

The picks are based mostly on Finnish release dates.

Honorable mentions: Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, The Muppets, Cabin in the Woods, The Avengers, Paradise:Love, Searching for Sugarman, The Imposter

Worst disappointments: 1) Keyhole, 2) Django Unchained, 3) The Hobbit, 4) Haywire, 5) Argo

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
2. Cloud Atlas
3. Argo
4. Life of Pi
5. Skyfall
6. Looper
7. Zero Dark Thirty
8. Django Unchained
9. Prometheus
10. Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Best Experience of the Year: Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie

Best New Technology: 48 fps "HFR"

Worst Movie of the Year: Savages

Final List

Up for top 10 consideration.
1, Silver Linings Playbook
2. Killer Joe
3. Moonrise Kingdom
4. Zero Dark Thirty
5. Looper
6. Prometheus
7. Goon
8. Life of Pi
9. Bernie
10. Sinister

Super Honorable Mention
Haywire
Les Miserables
The Raid Redemption

Honorable mention: Movies I enjoyed, but not enough to consider them for my top ten

The Avengers
The Dark Knight Rises
Argo
Dredd
Coriolanus
The Grey
21 Jump Street
The Hunger Games
Savages
The Campaign
Premium Rush
Jack Reacher
Skyfall
Lawless
Cabin in the Woods

The dissapointing: These are not bad movies, but they are the films that I was most excited for and they just fell way short of my expectations.

Lincoln
The Master
Anna Karenina
Flight
The Hobbit

Think I'm going to have to partake in some tactical voting.

I'm guessing you mean vote stacking. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of this whole thing? What's wrong with seeing an accurate representation of everyone likes around here? It's not as if the movies will actually receive any awards from this.

Apologies if I've picked you up wrong.

1. The Dark Knight Rises
2. Argo
3. Silver Linings Playbook
4. Lincoln
5. Django Unchained
6. Moonrise Kingdom
7. The Master
8. Life of Pi
9. 21 Jump Street
10. Looper

1. Dark Knight Rises
2. Django
3. Prometheus
4. Cloud Atlas
5. Lincoln
6. The Grey
7. Zero Dark 30
8. The Raid

Most unexpectedly adorable: The first half of Django

Best Action in a movie besides The Raid? Cloud Atlas, I know, I think it was a bad year for action.

Lifetime achievement award for finally explaining why superhero chicks wear heels? Dark Knight Rises.

Most pointless use of special effects. Molding JGL's face to look like Bruce Willis. Who was going to have a problem if they just used contacts and avoided prosthetics? Oh yeah, nerds who rate movies by the number of technical errors.

Lincoln Trailer | Steven Spielberg | Daniel Day-Lewis
Looks like Skyfall will be the movie to see November 9th.

01. Silver Linings Playbook
02. Django Unchained
03. Dredd
04. Looper
05. Argo
06. Lincoln
07. Skyfall

08. Cabin In The Woods

I missed a lot of shit too. Oh well.

1) Moonrise kingdom

2) Silver linings playbook

3) The Hobbit

4) The Avengers

Also am I the only one that feels that Argo is kinda void? It lacked good characters and I just felt disconnected from the whole thing...

Dredd looked really fucking stupid, but there's a lot of people raving about it here, maybe I should check it out after all.

Though a lot of you guys also loved The Raid, which didn't really do anything for me.

1. Last Ride - Trailer

2. Samsara

3. The Master

4. Jiro Dreams of Sushi

5. Marley - Tralier

6. Bernie

7. Seven Psychopaths

8. Cabin in the Woods

9. The Divide - I'm a sucker for these types of movies.

10. Lincoln. - Last Few minutes were sappy.

I still need to see a bunch of contenders, But overall last year was a real letdown.

Skyfall
Wreck-It Ralph
DREDD
Cabin in the Woods
The Grey

Good year.

I've seen enough awesome films to make a top-10. But I haven't seen the following.

- Django Unchained
- Anna Karenina (easily seeing this make my top 10 since it sounds like my kind of film)
- Goodbye, First Love
- The Turin Horse
- Cabin in the Woods
- The Loneliest Planet
- Once Upon a Time in Anatolia
- Amour
- Life of Pi
- Cloud Atlas
- Wreck it Ralph
- Oslo, August 31st
- Beasts of the Southern Wind
- Wuthering Heights (comes out on blu-ray here around feb 14th).

Plus several other films, doubt I'm going be able to see them all before the dead-line tho.

5.Cabin In the Woods
6.Zero Dark Thirty
7.Perks of being a wallflower
8.Seven Psychopaths

10.Ruby Sparks

Special mention: Skyfall, End of Watch

Maaaan.

I was told that Cloud Atlas is a good movie. I didn't know that meant an easy #1 spot for the moment. Good thing this thread made me watch the 2012 movies I missed instead of just listing the ones I have seen already.

yeah people need to put numbers by them. my advice: if they haven't by the close of voting, just ignore those lists. Not really up to you to interpret their lists

I agree. Since there's only a few pages, maybe somebody could PM those people and let them know that if they want their vote to count, they can try to put them in order (I would but I'm out and about and m.neogaf.com ain't my phone's friend).

At the very least, though, those who didn't provide a numerical ranking are still contributing to the discussion, so no real harm done.

No need to trouble. I'll just use those that are numbered like big ander said. There's still plenty of time for anyone to update theirs.

Man, all those mentions of Seven Psychopaths makes me want to go out and get it on DVD right now because I really, really, really want to see it. Expect fierce editing to this post if so and if I get a chance to see Silver Linings Playbook and/or Moonrise Kingdom in the near future.

1. Skyfall
-Brilliant cinematography, loved the story, loved the villain, loved the setpiece. A few cliches here and there but not enough to destroy my love of the movie.

2. Life of Pi
-Honestly, I went into this movie not sure if I even wanted to see it, and the end result blew me away. It was wonderfully directed and scripted, and the acting was superb, especially by someone relatively unknown.

3. Looper
-Good sci-fi fun, time travel executed relatively well. I personally loved the third act twist and overall I think the film was very, very well done.

4. Dredd
5. Django Unchained
6. Wreck-It Ralph
7. The Raid: Redemption
8. Cabin in the Woods

It's always been the case in past -OTY votes that lists without numbering (in alphabetical order, for instance) would be counted as being ranked from top to bottom, but if you absolutely insist...

I just feel like that's putting a decision on CFK when it's sooooo easy for posters to do that themselves.

1. take shelter*
2. the master
3. moonrise kingdom

that's it, really. there's still plenty of stuff i haven't seen yet, but i doubt i'll get to it before voting ends.

worst movie: cosmopolis.

*not sure if this is eligible because it is technically a 2011 release, but... i think most people will have seen it in 2012 because of its limited release. the blu-ray didn't come out until february? if this doesn't count, then leave it out, haha.

Yeah, Take Shelter is a fantastic film, but is definitely a 2011 release.

Just rambling, feel free to ignore: The Hobbit I think will be an interesting outcome.

It was a decent movie on its own.... But 48 fps is the greatest thing I have ever seen. I have it as #1 for this reason, which I'm thinking about changing. It really changed the way I think about movies -- especially 3D movies.

The fact of the matter is if TDKR was in 48fps and Hobbit wasn't, then TDKR would be top of my list while Hobbit would be near the bottom. Quite the conundrum.

I see Haywire in the OP, yet Bourne Legacy gets neglected. The movie isn't that bad after multiple viewing.

You know, I completely forgot that movie even released this year. I enjoyed it and don't regret going to see it, but honestly if it was forgettable enough for me to forget it while I was compiling my top list, I don't think it deserves to be on there.

Changed it to something without mentions. I really have no photoshop skills and can't really find a good image that summaries the year, so it'd be cool if someone could make or find a good one.
