NeoGAF: Your Top 5(+) Developers of All Time?

SEGA (AM2, WoW, Yakuza Team, Sonic Team.)
Valve
Capcom
Eidos (Montreal)
Ubisoft (Montepellier and Montreal.)

Those will be my top Five. Lionhead has been pretty good to me with the Fable titles, though.

-Nintendo: Lots of amazing games in their repertoire, and they single-handedly revived gaming after the video game crash in the '80s. They're also practically the only big company who still remembers that fun is the most important part in a game, and that games should be games. Probably my favorite video game company, along with...

-Sega: Made a lot of amazing games back before they were forced into being a third-party. Still release some good stuff, though they aren't as big as they used to be, besides Sonic Team's stuff. Their Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast stuff is still just amazing and diverse.

-Capcom: Back in the day, they could do no wrong. They've ran into some problems with gamers recently, but I still think they can make (or outsource, hah) some great games.

-Namco: Lots of classic arcade games under their belt, and some great 3D fighters like Tekken and Soulcalibur. Just love them. I could play their games for hours.

-Konami: Castlevania, Contra, Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and a bunch of classic NES, SNES, and Genesis games earned them a spot in my top developers.

-Rare: When they worked with Nintendo, anything they made was basically like playable gold. While I still enjoyed some of their later games, they just aren't the same anymore, but their classic games still hold up great, and will forever be some of my favorites. The Donkey Kong Country series is still up in my favorite platformers of all time, and Perfect Dark is still my favorite first-person shooter. All of their SNES and N64 stuff is just amazing, and damn could they pull off some amazing stuff on those.

-Treasure: I don't think these guys could make a bad game even if they tried. Everything they make is amazing, from incredible 2D games like Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, Guardian Heroes, and Mischief Makers, to spectacular 3D games like Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, and the Sin and Punishment games, these guys just can't do wrong. Hell, they even made a game starring Ronald McDonald that turned out to be awesome!

-SNK: Amazing back in the '90s. Arcade game heaven. They could do wonders with their spritework, showing that even decades old hardware could kick some ass.

-Ubisoft: Pretty much here solely because of the Rayman series, but damn, what a series it is! One of the platforming greats.

Nintendo (Everything)
Squaresoft (Final Fantasy)
Konami (Old Arcades, Silent Hill, MGS)
Rareware (Donkey Kong Country - Banjo Kazooie/Tooie)

And maybe Naughty Dog (Crash Bandicoot / Racing, Uncharted, Last of Us...)

1. Bullfrog ---- By a fucking mile. Theme Park, Theme Hospital, and Dungeon Keeper was my childhood.

2. Nintendo
3. Capcom - The old Capcom
4. Konami - The old Konami
5. Valve

In no particular order..

DICE- Battlefield series
Rainbow Studios- Motocross series
Bethesda- Elder Scrolls series
Bungie- Halo series and Destiny
Valve- Half-life and Portal

Blizzard - Developers of my all-time favorite game, Starcraft 2, along with all their other great titles.
Valve - Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Counterstrike, Team Fortress. They own the shooter genre and have done an incredible thing for PC gaming with the Steam platform.
Nintendo - Not sure an explanation is really necessary. Nintendo has developed masterpiece after masterpiece.
Capcom - Only included because this is an all-time developer list. I don't like their recent work, but you can't deny the quality of their previous titles.
SEGA - Same as Capcom really.

Bungie
Squaresoft*
Rareware*
Bioware
Infinity ward*

All the asterisks mean the studios at their peak with all the best talent so SNES/N64 rare, infinity ward before the coup, and well square should be self explanatory

According to my biased Excel sheet, which only takes into consideration games that I have completed:

  • Naughty Dog
  • Platinum Games
  • Monolith Software ('the Xenoblade company')
  • Ubisoft
  • Camelot

If we were to go with what I would personally consider my top 5:

  1. Squaresoft: as many have said, the kingpin and pinnacle of RPGs and interesting hybrid games (Brave Fencer Musashi, Parasite Eve) in their day
  2. Capcom: love me some Breath of Fire, Street Fighter, and Resident Evil 2!
  3. Nintendo: 'nuff said. Very competent game design skill and can often successfully tap into the base element of fun.
  4. Sega: Large part of my childhood and was home to several development team darlings (Project OverWorks, M2, Sonic Team, etc.)
  5. Platinum Games: because Vanquish.

1. Nintendo. If ever there could be a factual answer to the OP, it would of course be this.
2. Capcom. MegaMan X and MegaMan Legends 2 are both in my top 5 games of all time. Resident Evil 4 is phenomenal as well. Huge library of games, many mediocre, but many amazing.
3. FROM. Developer of the moment. The DSouls series feels a lot like the savior of the industry right now. Staggering hyperbole, yes, but still it feels that way.
4. Retro. These guys created the absolute best game of all time. And 3 others that were quite good.
5. Naughty Dog. They wouldn't be on the list were it not for their PS3 offerings. 4 straight games that were each amazing for the time is quite an accomplishment. I haven't played TLoU yet though.

Rockstar Games
Ever since their current creative core (Houser brothers, Leslie Benzies) came together to make GTA III Rockstar has been my favourite developer out there. From the PS2 GTA trilogy, to Bully, to GTA IV, to Red Dead Redemption, all of them have been immensely enjoyable for me. Easily the best open-world developer around for my money.

Black Isle Studios
Both Fallouts, both Icewind Dales and Planescape Torment are all among the greatest RPG's of all time. A practically flawless run of great games. One that I don't think has been matched since. At least not in the RPG genre.

Blizzard Entertainment
Not exactly beloved around these parts lately, but they're still one of my favourites. Warcraft and Starcraft have been two of my favourite franchises ever since they started in the 90's and I've been steadily enjoying World of Warcraft for 9 years at this point with no intention of quitting anytime soon. WoW in particular is what solidifies them as one of my favourite developers. I don't think I've ever had as much fun with a game as I did with the first 3-4 years of WoW. It was near flawless back then. Some of the magic is lost these days, but I still enjoy it quite a bit. And Starcraft II is also great (D3 was a disappointment, sure, but I didn't hate it!).

LucasArts
A developer that defined my childhood. Point & click adventure was basically the biggest genre around when I was a kid, and LucasArts made some of the very best. The Monkey Island series, Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango. Their catalog is filled with classics.

Squaresoft
I really don't care much Square Enix or their games these days, but Squaresoft was the shit. Like LucasArts, I grew up with their games. And also like LucasArts they are a shell of their former self these days.

The Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Xenogears. Fucking classic RPG's! Such a shame what they've been up to this gen. Maybe XV will be good, yeah? Maybe?

1. Nintendo EAD: Masterpiece after masterpiece. Excellence is assured with this team.
2. Retro Studios: Crafted my favorite game, Metroid Prime. Are amazing at world building, and atmosphere.
3. From Software: Great breadth of titles. From dark fantasy, to sci fi mecha, to high fantasy, they demonstrate a love for their work as well.
4. Valve Corporation: Team Fortress, Half Life, Portal, Counter Strike, and more. These guys really enjoy making games, and show unparalleled support and interest in the community.
5. Squaresoft: Absolute kings of the RPG genre back in the day. Grand adventures, and cool characters were synonymous with the company.

Honorable Mentions

1. Blizzard Entertainment
2 . Monolithsoft
3. DICE

1. Looking Glass Studios
2. Valve
3. Bungie
4. Obsidian
5. Irrational Games

Some of you meant Rocksteady instead of Rockstar, right.. right?!? :(

I'd say my personal list is:

Naughty Dog
Bethesda
Rockstar
Valve
Yakuza Team (can't remember if they have a full name)

Valve Corporation: The video game equivalent of The Factory. There's absolutely no mistaking that what they are churning out is Product. When Gabe Newell talks, he doesn't talk about "art," or "talent" (in fact, he dislikes the word), but "consumers" and "value." Valve is a factory, but one with enough genius and free will that it consistently pushes boundaries. They also make some great games. Portal 2 is probably the best comedy the medium's seen, Team Fortress 2 one of the best MP shooters ever made and Dota 2, for my money, is video games' greatest spectator sport. I like everything they do, I like the way they work, I like not only the way they treat indies, but the ways in which they collaborate with them. They're a gem.
Dreamcast-era Sega (United Game Artists, Smilebit, Overworks, Wow Entertainment, Hitmaker, Sega Rosso): I don't think we'll see a flurry of creativity like this from a major publisher ever again. It was my golden age. Rez, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5, Typing of the Dead, Samba de Amigo, Cosmic Smash, Crazy Taxi and special mention to Vivarium and Seaman. Sony is lauded (and rightfully so) for recruiting at IGF. Well, these weren't indies, tucked away as digital downloads. This was Sega. First (and second) parties developing aesthetically and conceptually fucking bizarre games with unparalleled arcade sensibilities for retail release. Now that's brave.
Media Molecule: Their aesthetic sensibilities are about five years ahead of every other monied studio on the planet, which in this medium might well be a lifetime. They also made two of my favorite platformers of all-time, beautiful childlike wonders that facilitated some of the most memorable social game experiences I've ever had. Tearaway looks like another perfect little thing.
Nintendo EAD: Nintendo EAD churns out more mediocrity than anyone will ever give them credit for. But once every year or two they deliver a Super Mario Galaxy, or something less sumptuous like Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and it's so easy to forgive them. Nintendo is terrible as a consumer-facing company, but probably the greatest video game developer of all-time, and EAD is their crown jewel.
Team ICO: They made the Team ICO games.

Honorable Mentions: CCP Games, Irrational Games, Intelligent Systems, Vlambeer, Looking Glass

Bioware - Don't care what people say about their recent output. Some of the best RPG's I have ever played.

Rockstar - Self-explanatory

Naughty Dog - Self-explanatory again ;)

Bethesda - Brilliant open world games, spent so many hours on their games :)

FROM - Dark Souls, enough said.

Honorable mentions - Eidos Montreal, Bungie, Blizzard

Nintendo - Come on, it's Nintendo. Question their business decisions all you like, but their games are completely on another level from anyone else in the industry. Unmatched.

Capcom - Not as great as they were last gen, but their games have still been great. RE4, Clover studios, DMC, all just amazing. It is hard to beat that.

Platinum - Former Clover. Still just as amazing. Some of the best action games this gen.

Bioware - Yeah, they're not so great now, but it can never take away from past glory.

DICE - Them getting Battlefront got them on the list. That is a "stars aligned" kind of match. Battlefield is my favorite FPS (even if I did come in late with BC1) so far and Mirror's Edge was a great new experience. I have faith that they will keep delivering.

Hard time choosing between DICE, Criterion, and Rockstar, so I'll give honorable mentions. Burnout series, Hot Pursuit (2010), and Black were great fun games, but I'm not a fan of them only working on NFS now. And Rockstar, GTAs were great fun as well, but I've never finished one (and I own them all since 3), but Red Dead was amazing and the only R* game I've ever completed.

Nintendo - No real explanation needed
Bethseda - Fallout. Probably one of my favorite games ever created. I'm excited to see what's going to happen with Fallout 4.
Rockstar - Red Dead Redemption was my favorite game from last gen. Their GTA games are awesome as well.
Capcom - Mainly the old Capcom. I love the Ace Attorney series too. I'm currently playing through Ghost Trick which is fantastic.
Rareware - Back when Rare was outputting some fantastic stuff on the SNES and N64. My most played N64 games were Rare games. I sinked countless hours into Goldeneye.

Honorable Mention:
Irrational Games

SCE Japan Studio

Because of - Ape Escape, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice, and Rain/Puppeteer/The Last Guardian because I know deep down they'll all be ace.

Sega

Because of - Ristar, Sonic 3, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Shenmue II, Yakuza 2

Naughty Dog

Because of - Crash Bandicoot 2, Jak II, Uncharted 3, The Last of Us

Because of - fl0w, Flower and Journey

Honourable mentions go to Remedy, Quantic Dream, Ninja Theory, Squaresoft, Criterion, Capcom and MediaMolecule.

Nintendo
Squaresoft
Atlus
Kojima Productions
Platinum

honorable mention to FROM software for Souls and Armored Core.

90's Bioware - Baldur's gate 1 and 2

90's Rare - Great classics like Banjo and Kazooi.

EAD the ones that did Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask.

Sid meier and Firaxis Games for Civilization series.

Distinctive Software for Stunts

Strategic Studies Group - Warlords 1 and the Warlords series

id Software - Commander Keen

Moonlite Software - for Moonlite Software

Monolith Soft - Xenoblade

Factor 5 - star wars rogue squadron.

The list goes on and on

In no order:

1) CAPCOM - Prior to PS3/Xbox360. Remember when they gave a shit and didn't try to fuck over there fans? They gave me my favorite hero of all time: Mega Man. Anyone remember Onimusha? It wasn't perfect, but it was fun. Resident Evil still had some scares
/zombies
. Devil May Cry wasn't so angsty. Something called Marvel vs Capcom 2 made people go insane, too. What happened to them, I don't know.

2) SquareSoft - Prior to PS3/Xbox360. They gave me three of my favorite games (FFIX, FFXII, Xenogears).

3) Naughty Dog - Uncharted series (haven't finished TLOU). Didn't like Jak & Daxter. But Crash?! CRASH!!!

4) SuckerPunch - Infamous and Sly Cooper. Superhero/comic book styled open world game? Check. A raccoon with kleptomania and who, by the way, also wears a mask? Check. Done.

5) Media Molecule- LittleBigPlanet.Nuff said. (Tearaway looks good too, I just don't have a VITA, yet)

Honourable Mention:

Rockstar - if it wasn't for GTAIV...you would be one of the five
Bethesda - if you knew how to actually QA/test your games PRIOR to releasing them, you'd be in the five too

Notable Mentions:

Insomniac
before losing their fucking minds/nerve/spirit/compassion

EDIT:!!! How did I forget From Software?! And not for Demon/Dark Souls. For Armored Core...I am ashamed of myself.

Rockstar Games: GTA (especially Vice City and hopefully V), Red Dead Redemption, Bully...
Illusion Softworks: Mafia - 'nuff said.
Valve: Half-Life, Portal
Nintendo: Zelda, Mario, Pokémon...
Ubisoft:: Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, XIII...

Valve - Half Life 2, TF2, CounterStrike, Portal, Dota 2, Steam
Rockstar - GTA3, Vice City, Manhunt, Red Dead
Naughty Dog - Uncharted 2, Last of Us
Nintendo - NES, SNES era gaming
Blizzard - Warcraft 3, WoW, Diablo 2, Starcraft

Bungie, revolutionized console shooters with the release of Halo: CE as well as changed the landscape of online multyplayer with Halo 2, which is all we see today. Online multiplayer.

Nintendo, speaks for itself. Metroid, Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, all systems really. I really want to mention Koji Kondo, too.

Square (Enix), Final Fantasy and class systems, come to mind. Set a precedence for graphics, story telling and systems.

Blizzard, created the business model for one of the most successful games - and the genre itself - of all time as well as the way to run an MMO (yes, I know Everquest, but no)

Valve, Steam, linear but heavily narrative story telling, Source Engine leading to the most popular FPS in the world CS, along with the creation of Half Life and Portal.

Epic Games - For (pre-3)Unreal Tournament and nothing else. Still my favourite gaming memories.

Capcom - Devil May Cry 1 and 3 primarily, but their output previous to this generation was excellent in general.

Platinum/Clover - Devil May Cry became Bayonetta, regardless of what Ninja Theory might tell you.

Blizzard - Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft. WC3 had life beyond it's original content thanks to mods that are still fun today. Oh, and they also made Starcraft.

Valve - On a run like no other. When they finally drop the bomb, I believe it will be worth the wait.

Honourable Mentions:

Polyphony Digital - Gran Turismo 1, 2 and 3 were a big part of my childhood.

Team Ico - Don't really need to explain this.

KojiPro - The original Metal Gear Solid blew my mind at 9 years old.

Infinity Ward - First they made Allied Assault as 2015. They went on to make Call of Duty 2(I played on PC) and Modern Warfare. Fuck whatever happened after that, because what came before was amazing.

Entire list subject to change 5 minutes from now probably.

Square Enix - The only company left making AAA JRPGs. They don't always hit home runs, but I love them anyway.

Vanillaware - Dat George Kamitani.

Namco Bandai - Tales games. I love them, I just... eat them up.

Naughty Dog - Their gameplay misses the mark sometimes, but damn these guys know how to make great cinematic experiences. In the sea of games trying to be like movies, Naughty Dog does it the best.

Nintendo - They have a strong stable of IPs. Nostalgia weighs in heavily here, and they can (almost) do no wrong with their franchises. While it would be refreshing to see them do some radically different, I continue to buy their hardware for their 1st party software.

1. Nintendo EAD (amazing variety)
2. Valve Software (consistently produce classics + Steam)
3. Ubisoft Montreal (great variety but able to handle multiple projects simultaneously)
4. Naughty Dog (they've done platformers, action/adventures, a cart racer, survival horror...they're amazing)
5. Rockstar North (almost every game they make is excellent)

Top 10 would allow for smaller less industrious devs to surface but anyway in order:

Bethesda
Square
Nintendo
SCE
Firaxis

Will update later with blah blah.

Psygnosis: those guys were magicians. Wipeout, Destruction Derby, G-Police, Colony Wars, as well as their older stuff like Shadow of the Beast and Ecstatica. Just amazing.

Westwood Studios: Somehow, a single studio managed to create Lands of Lore (regarded as one of the best dungeon crawlers), the Kyrandia series (regarded as some of the best point and clicks of the time) and create the RTS genre with Dune 2 and Command & Conquer. What is this I don't even...

Lucas Arts: enough rivers of tears have flown this year due to the closure of the studio, and various people have written more eloquently why they were so great.

Nintendo: three decades of hits, one after the other. Thousands of hours of fun. No other company has had this much impact on my life. The courage to ship radically new inventions, from the Game Boy to the DS and the Wiimote.

Platinum Games: perfect track record, perfect team.

Square-Enix - Not for the games this gen, but because of the legacy that Square and Enix left: Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts series, Xenogears, Soul Blazer trilogy (published by Enix), Dragon Quest series, Chrono series, Ogre Battle (plublished by Enix), etc.

Nintendo - The Legend of Zelda series, Mario franchise, Fire Emblem series, Mother series, Kirby series, Golden Sun series, etc.

Kojima Productions - Metal Gear Solid series

Naughty Dog - Crash Bandicoot trilogy, Uncharted trilogy (I haven't played TLOU yet)

Atlus - Shin Megami Tensei series

Honorable mentions: Falcom (Ys, LoH), Namco Bandai (Klonoa, Tales Of), Valve (Half-Life, Portal), Capcom (Megaman), Rare (N64-era), From Software (Souls)
