NeoGAF: Your Top 5(+) Developers of All Time?

No particular order:

Treasure
Clover Studio
Andrew Braybrook
Bitmap Brothers
Valve

Honorable mentions:

Naughty Dog
Media Molecule
VanillaWare
Team Silent
Team ICO

Nintendo - absolutely without parallel

Valve - Everything is quality

Square-enix - Historically amazing, plus a few gems lately.

Westwood - Dune 2 and the C&C series along with lots of others

Bioware - Not a bad game to their name

Valve - Gabe N., Portal, Half-Life, Dota 2 Steam, what more can you ask for (hint more hats)

Tecmo (Tomonobu Itagaki Era) - No one could make CG looks as good as the original Team Ninja not even Blizzard or Square. Ninja Gaiden Black his magum Opus still the greatest action/adventure game ever.

Squaresoft/Enix (Hironobu Sakaguchi Era) - For as simple as some stories were Square made them feel alive with depth and characters that you wanted to see their end.

Blizzard (Pre-Wow) - For swiping War Hammer these guys did well enough, no actually they surpassed all expectations with solid gameplay, great stories, and well crafted art too bad Metz is all high on his horse.

Rockstar - Vice City need I say more?

Nintendo
LucasArts
Psygnosis
Sega AM2
Squaresoft

Honourable mentions: Valve, Blizzard, old Capcom, Konami, old Sonic Team, Clover Studio/Platinum Games, Rockstar (R* North in particular).

7 - Naughty Dog - I have the three Crash games on the PS1, and whilst I don't think they did platforming as good as Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie, they were damn fun and I must have completed each of them 3 or 4 times. I've only dabbled with Jak and Daxter but they seemed pretty cool too. The Uncharted trilogy was also pretty good. 2 being the highlight, I'm also enjoying The Last of Us. Consistently good quality for way over a decade.

6 - Amusement Vision - Super Monkey Ball, Super Monkey Ball 2 and F-Zero GX all had amazing, tight controls, addictive gameplay and tons of replay value which is why they're held in high regard in the speedrunning community. If I could have a new F-Zero on the Wii U from these guys I'd be over the moon.

5 - Retro Studios - I was late to the party with Metroid Prime, but man was it great. Super Metroid is a classic and playing the Prime trilogy game me total confidence in whatever they did next. DKC Returns was a welcome addition to the original trilogy, which I was also a huge fan of. I've got to admit I was a little disappointed to see that they're developing a new DKC on the Wii U as opposed to a new Metroid or Starfox, but the fact that David Wise is back on board for the soundtrack makes me more than okay with it :)

4 - Clover/Platinum - Okami, that's all it needed. Viewtiful Joe was also pretty good and I look forward to the Wonderful 101 this year. A proper Okami sequel would have me foaming at the mouth though.

3 - Monolith Soft - Xenoblade Chronicles is my favourite game of all time, that alone gives them at least third place on my list. What they managed to pull of on gimped hardware was incredible and I'm mega hyped for X now they have a lot more power to play with. I just wish it had the colour palette of the original.

2 - Old Rare - DKC trilogy, Killer Instinct,Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Conkers Bad Fur Day. Rare was on absolute fire in the 90s. Such a shame how it came to an end.

1 - Nintendo - The Legend of Zelda is my all time favourite franchise, and the consistently ridiculously high quality of their games over 25 years is extraoadinary. Their first party offerings will sell me their hardware for as long as this quality remains.

Edit: Honorable mention for Atlus, Tales Studio and Game Freak

Threads like these make me nostalgic but also a bit sad. I know it happens in every industry, but some of the developers we've lost over the years...just incredible companies man.

In no particular order:

Obsidian Entertainment - The only company I 100% trust when it comes to WRPGs, and the only company that might get me banned on this forum because of all the "bugs" talk.

Black Isle Studios - They made (or help make) the best WRPGs of all time. Nothing else to say.

Arkane Studios - Sure, they only made 3 games (and one of them was fairly disappointing), but they have a clear, ambitious vision and they're not afraid to experiment a bit. Whatever they make, I'll be interested in it.

Atlus - After the PS1 I pretty much stopped liking JRPGs. Then I recently "discovered" the MegaTen universe and realized that, all this time, I've been playing the wrong games.

From Software - The Souls series made me put them in this list. They're just THAT good, and they managed to reignite the love for a proper challenge. Oh, and they also made Otogi, so that's a plus.

Nintendo - for Super Mario World and a lot other great games. Also they should get more credit for saving Bayonetta 2.

AM2 - They created Virtua Fighter the father of 3D fighting games.

Capcom - despite their mistakes they are still a top developer.

Platinum Games - Well they consists for the most part of people that defined the "old" Capcom. Also for Bayonetta and Vanquish.

Tango Gameworks - super talented young generation of japanese developers lead by a legend named Shinji Mikami. The Evil Within looks fantastic.

Honorable mention
Valhalla Games Studio - The haven't created anything under that name, yet. But they worked on many of my favorite games as Team Ninja.

1. Rockstar obvious choice
2. Rare number 1 during the good old days
3. Capcom have lost it a bit but were incredible during PSX/PS2 days
4. Konami MGS, Silent Hill, Pro Evo etc.
5. Naughty Dog new entry through TLoU

For me:

1- Worldwide Studios (Guerilla Game, Naughty Dog, Evolution, Santa Monica, Japan Studio, etc..)

For titles like Killzone, Uncharted, Last Of Us, Jak and Daxter, Motorstorm, God of War, Echochrome, Minna no golf, etc...

2- Squaresoft/Square Enix (only era SFC/PS1/PS2)

For titles like FF, Romancing Saga, Front Mission, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Alcahest,etc....)

3- Capcom (Most important era PS1/SFC)

For titles like Megaman, Street Fighter, Contra, Bio Hazard, Magical Quest, Aladdin, Gouls'n Ghost, etc....

4- Konami (most important era SFC/PS1)

For titles like Axelay, Goemon, Otomedius, Parodius, Rocket night, Metal Gear, etc....

5- Nintendo

For Titles like Mario, Wave Race, 1080 Snowboarding, Zelda, Fire Emblem, Yoshi, etc...

- Rockstar
- Kojima Productions (METAL GEAR SOLID)
- Naughty Dog
- Polyphony Digital (They really were a top tier dev during PSX/PS2 days. I hope they reclaim the racing crown).
- Sony Santa Monica (They've proven to be excellent devs despite only making God Of War games)
- Capcom (Sad to see how they've become a shadow of themselves. I want the classic Capcom back!)
- Bungie (Halo)
- Irrational Games (these guys were incredible - SWAT 4, Bioshock, System Shock 2)
- LucasArts (Republic Commando, Jedi Knight)
- Ubisoft - make excellent games to be honest despite churning out sequels year in year out
- Eidos Montreal
- Valve. The only company which makes games slower than Polyphony Digital.
- Bioware. Can't help but feel they're in decline, but we will see.

Black Isle
- Baldur's Gate and Fallout 2 nuff' said

Interplay
- Original Fallout among so many others

Naughtydog
- Uncharted/ The Last of US

Rockstar
- GTA, bully, RDR need I go on?

(old, N64 and before) Nintendo
- Ocarina of Time, Mario 64 etc.

Microprose (Pirates, Gunship, Civilization etc.)
Lucasarts (adventure games and some fun action flight sims)
Origin (Ultima, Wing Commander etc.)
Nintendo (some of their timeless classics)
Naughty Dog (Uncharted and Last of Us are at the top of this generation)

In no particular order:

Kojima Productions - Metal Gear Solid is a game series that is just so unique and I love it for its convoluted story and its diverse gameplay.

Naughty Dog - I love story and these guys handle it the best within the entire industry. The Last of Us is a prime example of that.

Bungie - Halo defined console FPS games and Halo essentially got me into the FPS genre. Destiny also looks amazing.

Nintendo - Do I have to clarify?

Valve - Three things: Half-Life, Portal, and Steam.

Naughty Dog
I enjoyed the Crash games on PS1, at that time I was getting motion sickness from playing 3D games like Mario 64, but I had none of that with Crash. On PS2 I enjoyed the Jak games and felt they were superior to Ratchet, but not by much. The coming out party for ND was this generation, Uncharted was great, but ever since Uncharted 2 they have been top tier. TLOU is currently my GOTG.

Valve Corporation
Portal 2 was my first experience with a Valve product and what a great experience that was. L4D and L4D2 were great and probably the best zombie games of the generation. me that Valve games are up my alley. I am pining for a L4D collection on PS4 and am debating buying the orange box on PS3 even though I know it's supbar due to EA handling the port.

Rockstar Games
GTAIV was great, the episodes were also great and the TBOGT is best DLC from any developer this generation and actually shows us that DLCs are not all evil. Red Dead Redemption is the best western game ever. Max Payne 3 was good besides the bullet sponge enemies and some other bullshit, but overall it was a good experience. GTAV is looking to become another masterpiece from them.

Old school Lucas Arts/TellTale Games
Old school LA games were great. I bought and thoroughly enjoyed MI and MI2 SE and I really wish they would remake some other classics such as Indy, MM, GF, and other MI games. LA as of today is done, but I wish Disney would sell those properties to TT games as they have produced the best point and click adventure games in a long time and hit a home run with TWD.

Irrational Games
System Shock was a master piece and Bioshock surprised me positively. The story was great and kept me engrossed in it, and Bioshock had the best atmosphere of any game this generation until TLOU. I haven't played Infinite yet, so they might drop out if what some people are saying it's true, but I'm looking forward to that experience.

I'll leave an honorable mention for Firaxis, old school Nintendo, Capcom, and Square games.

Vlave - Half Life series alone puts it on the list.

Rock's tar - GTA 3, VC, SA, GTA4, Red Dead Redemption

Knotty Dog - Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us

BioWhere Pre-2008 - KoToR, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 1

Origin's Systems pre-EA - Ultima 6, 7, 8... Wing Commander 1 - 3...

Bullfrawg - Syndicate, Populous

I like the way Gamasutra approached the topic, combining studios that were essentially the same in all but name and putting an importance on strong eras instead of allowing low points to drag down overall opinions. Will attempt to do the same with my picks.

Q Entertainment - I don't believe Q Entertainment has ever made a bad game. I also believe that they designed two of the greatest games of all time for my tastes - Lumines and Rez. Their singular focus on achieving synthesia via gameplay produced original ideas and enduring experiences that stand the test of time. I worry for their direction without Mizuguchi at the helm, but they'll always be up there for me.

Platinum Games/Clover Studios - I remember geeking out over Viewtiful Joe, from the screenshots to the prerelease hype to the tight controls and visual splendor of the game itself. Then along comes Okami with its watercolor charm and Zelda trappings, and I'm instantly a Clover fan for life. From the disappointment of the band breaking up to the resurgence of Platinum, it's been an interesting ride but thankfully one littered with great games that play as cool as they look in an era of increasingly cinematic experiences.

MicroProse/Firaxis - Civilization being the greatest series in gaming notwithstanding, Microprose (and it's rebirth as Firaxis) are one of the few studios that have been close to my heart from my childhood to today. Over the years I've been obsessed with Colonization, had multiple dreams about Alpha Centauri, purchased Pirates! a half dozen times, rammed my head against Classic Ironman in XCOM and steadfastly held onto my boxed copy of SimGolf as a prized possession. Also, Civilization is the greatest series in gaming.

Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts - Experiencing the magic of a LucasArts adventure game is probably what cemented gaming as a hobby for me. I treated those intro logo animations like Pokemon, desperate to catch/see them all. Wasn't even a huge Star Wars fan too, but the craft (or at least the creative spark) that went into those games when they could easily mail it in was clear. Of course it was the murderer's row of Monkey Island 1/2, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango that puts them on this list, but even their b-tier adventures and smaller projects had merit. Never the same after the first big house cleaning, but historically essential.

Nintendo - Not a lot needs to be said here, their track record and longevity speaks for itself. Miyamoto is a genius and the industry continues to be enriched and inspired by the games Nintendo produces, even if they are not the dominant force right now that they have been at times.

First off: it breaks my heart to see some mention Volition for every game they made after the impeccable FreeSpace series. I still believe that FreeSpace 2 is the pinacle of Space Operas. Give it the credit it deserves!

Nintendo - Does it need an explanation?

id Software - The daddy of FPS who pushed the limits of technology further and further. Who knows how our games would look like now without them? Not to mention that Quake 3/Live is still the best 1on1 multiplayer shooter ever created.

MicroProse - Best time I had on the Amiga 500 was thanks to them. How would you even define Pirates! genre-wise? The sheer amount of brilliant games Sid Meier created is staggering. But also their combat sims gave me great joy.

thatgamingcompany - I loved every single game. Ok it were just 3, but since every one was a completely unique experience and different from what the rest of the world is doing they do deserve this spot.

LucasArts - I will never forget the laughs and insane puzzles I had with their point & click adventures nor the bitemarks I left in my joystick playing X-Wing. Those two genres alone would put them in my list but I'll mention Dark Forces and Jedi Knight (the merit for Jedi Outcast belongs to Raven) too. And oh my god how could I forget Republic Commando.

Honorable Mentions:

psygnosis & Bitmap Brothers: Amiga 500 kid so I'm obligated to mention those. I mean: Walker/Shadow of the Beasts, Speedball 2:Brutal Deluxe/The Chaos Engine/Gods... c'mon son. Awesome games.
Massive Entertainment: Huge sucker for RTS w/o base building. Ground Control and World in Conflict looked and played awesome, hopefully I can say the same about The Division in a few years.

Vlave - Half Life series alone puts it on the list.

Rock's tar - GTA 3, VC, SA, GTA4, Red Dead Redemption

Knotty Dog - Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us

BioWhere Pre-2008 - KoToR, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 1

Origin's Systems pre-EA - Ultima 6, 7, 8... Wing Commander 1 - 3...

Bullfrawg - Syndicate, Populous

woah. its funny cuz knot....

5) Bioware - They used to be much higher on my list, and as much as Mass Effect 3 was one of my favorite games last year, and Mass Effect is my favorite franchise of this generation, I'm not a huge fan of Dragon Age and have no interest in MMO's, so they have dropped down a bit below where they were this time last gen.

4) Rockstar - They would not have been in my top 20 dev's last gen, but because of the genius of these fully realized worlds like GTA IV and Red Dead and the amazing refined action of Max Payne 3, they have truly become one of my favorite developers ever over the course of the last generation.

3) Valve - Half Life 2 is the greatest shooter ever, Left 4 Dead is the greatest co-op game ever and Portal 2 is just the funniest game ever. They totally deserve a place on this list.

2) Kojima Productions - Because Metal Gear Solid is probably my favorite franchise ever.

1) Nintendo - Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Donkey Kong, F-Zero, Star Fox, Pikmin, Kid Icarus, Smash Bro's...'nuff said.

From Software - Dark Souls is the best game ever and I probably gained my love for mechs because of these bastards.
Platinum - I think Vanquish is a lot of fun but I still haven't finished it. I loved Bayonetta but it took me about one and a half year to finish it. But still, I simply enjoy playing their games. MGR PC is high on my want list.
Atlus - Fatlus hates Europe and I hate them back. But I love Shin Megami Tensei and Persona too much. Plus they have a trove of other great franchises up their sleeves.
CD Projekt - The Witcher wasn't all that great but there was something lovely about it. The Witcher 2 is a legit great game and I can't wait for the third one and Cyberpunk 2077.
Treasure - Gunstar Heroes and Ikaruga. I come back to these games too often.

nintendo ead - masters of level design, control and charm.
team ico - only two games but they're two journeys that i'll never forget
squaresoft/square-enix - between final fantasy, dragon quest, kingdom hearts, twewy and chrono trigger they've made nearly all of my favourite rpgs
ubisoft montpellier - ancel brings the most wonderful worlds to life
kojima productions - even though he keeps returning to the same series, kojima is probably the most daring person in triple a games and his games are full of depth and have personality stamped all over them

We should totally guess everyone's age based on their responses.

Depend ;). I went from the 32 bits era on. I could have gone to mention as favourite developers:

-Ocean Software, which maybe gave me my best gaming moments along with
-Dinamic Software
-Topo Software
-Imagine
-Data Soft
-Infogrames

Treasure- Incredibly innovative and fun. Proof that you don't need a large team or a large budget to make creative, influential, and timeless games.

Naughty Dog- From Crash Bandicoot through The Last of Us, they never fail to impress.

Nintendo EAD- While they lack in new IPs, no one can fuck with them in terms of fun gameplay and gameplay concepts.

Clover-A ballsy operation that created some great IPs.

Platinum-Carrying the Clvoer torch and making me happy with basically everything they do.

Honorable mentions: Team ICO, Cave, Valve, Kojima productions, Retro Studios.

Rockstar - GTA is my favorite series and I also love Midnight Club, Bully, RDR, etc.

Nintendo: Tremendous legacy, innovation, perfect engineering, leadership
Capcom: Ability to infuse a great fighting system into every game in every genre. Tremendous design ability.
Squaresoft: Able to fully get you inside a world and feel devoted to whatever is happening there. Music, art, design, technology. Tranished a bit by recent developments, but overall incredibly strong
Lucasarts: Their 1980's efforts are STILL ahead of its time. Games without death, game writing before game writing, ageless art direction, performed miracles with hardware
Naughty Dog: The new kings. Ability to take the entitre game genre forward into new areas, develop the human aspect and represent the rise of american devs.

Top Bottom
