NeoGAF's best and worst recommendations?

Worst: SMT IV. Absolutely hated it and legit think it's a terrible game.

Wonderful 101 was amazing in a lot of ways but it would still stand a solid shot of making the 'worst' list.

Best: Persona 4 Golden. I hate anime and 99% of JRPGs so I would never have tried this one without the level of praise it got. Did it deserve that praise? Not really, but I still raelly enjoyed it.

Most of the games I play I would have played anyway, but perhaps something like Virtue's Last Reward, which GAF hurried me towards could also make the list.

Best: Transformers: Devastation. Even though its pure fan service I loved it, the combat is fun, and now I know I need to give Platinum the time of day. Going to play Beoynetta 2 next.

Worst: Persona 4 Golden. I just never knew what the hell was going on in this game, the days just kept ticking by and I felt like I wasn't playing it right or something. Got the the 2nd persona boss battle and just kept getting wrecked. I put it down and haven't looked back.

motherfucker's gonna use "gunplay theatricality" and then misspell hearkens....smh

Best: Resident Evil 6
I'm glad some people stood by that game. I ended up liking it.

Worst: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Granted, it has backfired since then, but this game was quite poplar around here. It ended up at 4th place in the GotY list. What a terrible POS.

Worst: Metal Gear Rising. I blame it on this site's baffling love affair with Platinum. Shitty game, with non-existent level design, a parry system that requires you to stand still and do nothing until the red marker is in the right place in order to get the best results, awful butt-rock music, you've gotta pause the game to change weapons, irritating QTEs, graphics that look like a PS2 Call of Duty, a try-hard attempt to make a terrible character cool, so on and so forth. PS-plus'd it though, so at least I didn't spend any money.
This is all kind of true, but I still love it.

Best: Shovel Knight. Castle in the Darkness. Castle of Illusion Remake.

Worst: Never actually been recommended a game I didn't like via NeoGAF. Careful to read everyone's impressions to get a barometer on the actual strength of the game. I read what everyone has to say and that usually gives me an accurate impression.

Either way this place is amazing for game recommendations. The above three games I noted were some of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've ever had - especially Shovel Knight.

Nothing bad, really. If I take a recommendation here, I know full well it's just that, a recommendation from someone that likes it. If I don't, then big deal. The world moves on, I'll probably investigate a little more thoroughly next time before I go with that person or developer again.

In terms of good recommendations, though, I think I got my first Dynasty Warriors game after GAFers convinced me there is more to it than just hitting the same button over and over. I used to be that guy who thought it was mindless gameplay, exactly the same each time. Now I know better.

Worst: People here love a lot of artsy indie games, but I tend to dislike about 75% of them.
Mostly pretentious shit or retro games that have one single gimmick that separates it from being a clone of an older game. I hated Fez, Limbo, and Stanley Parable. I won't use the term "try hard", but they're too transparent in how they wish to be perceived.
On the other hand, Journey is great, Guacamelee is great and even Unfinished Swan is good. I never felt suffocated by a message they were trying to push on me like other indie titles. They were just fun to play/experience. GAF just has a ridiculous hard on for artsy shit that I can't agree with.

Best: On the other hand, only on an enthusiast website like GAF would people recommend Spec Ops: The Line, Deadly Premonition or Vanquish. Which I love.

I've never bought a game that I didn't think I would like just because GAF recommended it, so I don't have any bad recommendations.

Best is most certainly Terranigma, which is now one of my favorite games of all time.

Best: Persona 4 Golden. The game deserves all the praise it gets.

Worst: Frog Fractions. I get it, it's so random.

A double Mikami post!

Best: Vanquish - an excellent, excellent game. Not necessarily a personal top ten game or anything, but the best game GAF recommended that I would not have played otherwise. When I buy things I usually know what I'm getting into.

Worst: The Evil Within. Oh my god guys, wtf. 60 bucks I'm never seeing again. When a game gets less playtime than fucking BOUND BY FLAME, you know you've made a terrible mistake.

Best: Revengeance

Worst: I don't listen to GAF very often so I haven't payed attention to any bad recommendations
yet

Best: Bayonetta

Thanks for opening my eyes, I'm a Platinum fanatic now.

Worst: Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker

I hate this fucking game and there's no point to playing it when MGSV exists now.

Worst: Dark Souls. I usually like challenging games but DS was far too frustrating and punishing in its set backs and cheap. (Ex first time you run into a mimic)

Best: Nier and Persona 4. Two outstanding games that I would never have played were it not for this forum and the something awful games forum. I hated Persona 1 so I had written the whole series off.

Best : Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls

This game is so recommended on both PC and PS4...but i prefer PC because the seasons and it's so damn fun they keep adding new content every single patch.

Worst : Watch Dogs

Why does this even exist?

Best: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. One of the top 10 games on PS2.
Runner-up: Valkyria Chronicles. One of the top 10 games on PS3. That said, it was the demo that ultimately convinced me to get the full game. GAF's raving just initially piqued my interest.

Worst: Hmmm...maybe Fez I suppose? I'm not even sure why that game didn't click with me. I'm sure there are a couple other games that GAF generally loved and I was underwhelmed, but I don't recall what they were.

Best: Metal Gear: Rising. Pure fucking joy. Made me play everything else platinum has put out.

Worst: Nier. Can't even remember it, it was that dull.

The Walking Dead. One of the most overrated games I've ever played.

Telltale Walking Dead? I couldn't agree more! Season one had a decent start and decent end, but is no where near as good as everyone makes it out to be. Your decisions don't actually matter because characters that die in one spot, will end up dieing in another later on.

Best: Persona 4: Golden

It became my favorite game of all time. Hope I can add Nier to the list soon.

Worst: Some

Also got to play some duds from GAF recommendations. Can't remember them though.

Don't really pay attention to what games are trending on gaf :P
I think the only game I tried out based solely on GAF hype is Driveclub PS+ edition. All it did was confirm that I still don't like any racing games with sim elements.

Best: Dragon's Dogma. That game is incredible and its great that you still see LTTP threads recommending it.

Worst: The Bioshock Infinite hate brigade.

Best: Binary Domain. Mad Max. I kind of gave Alpha Protocol another chance indirectly because of GAF reminding me it exists.

Worst: A few, but I don't get the love for Vanquish honestly. And yes I "get" how to play it, it just doesn't click with me. Phantom Pain is awful too for me, but I was buying it regardless.

I've learned to be very careful with GAF hype, despite respecting a lot of posters' opinions.

worst : bloodbourne demon souls dark souls 1 and 2.
those games do NOT respect your time.

best: monster hunter. no matter how hard you never lose more than 30 min of progress.
also if it get's to hard you better grind more.

This post makes absolutely no sense.

Best: The Witcher 3

Worst: The Phantom Pain, (but I would've bought it anyway)

Best wishes.

Worst is the Last of Us. Just didn't enjoy it at all.

Can't think of any for best. There aren't many games that I've bought because of GAF. Previously mentioned games like Ace Attorney, 999, and DanganRonpa I was already into or bought, and I got into Ace Attorney through Nintendo Power and memes on the NSider message board in 2007 (which I fell in love with and then I got the rest of what I just mentioned cuz I heard they were similar). I played Persona mainly because people on GameFAQs kept talking about it. Uh I guess I played Bayonetta partially because of GAF which I enjoyed but not a lot.

Best: Planescape: Torment. My experience with the game was incredible. The best writing out of any game I've ever played. So good, that it frankly elevated the entire game to another level. I didn't care for the combat in the game, and it didn't really matter.

Worst: I'm honestly struggling to think of a time I've been led astray. My duds were definitely of my own choosing, lol . . .

Nier for both best and worst.

It's a very interesting game with some amazing roots and some of the greatest music of all time. People who love it really love it... but people who hate it really hate it too and with good reason. It's not that "they don't get it". It's a clunky game that is simply not universally appealing. The story, setting, characters, and execution doesn't cater to broad interests and you kind of have to slog through several backtracking playthroughs and side quests to get the most out of it. Where as I and a lot of people feel like the true ending was a master stroke of videogame writing I can see why the average person would just quit the game early, look this ending up, and be glad that they avoided "wasting their time".

It's not for everyone - it takes a certain kind of mettle and appreciation to stick with it to the end. You can't just throw the suggestion out there to everyone and expect them to enjoy it.

Best: Alpha Protocol, Might & Magic X or G-sync

Worst: Mordor, cant trust this place with any recommendations in the AAA space.

best: Hotline Miami, Forza Horizon 2

worst: Danganronpa 1 and 2. aaaarrrrggghhhh the frustration, I can't believe I got sold on this. 2 is better than 1 but it's still crap. staying far away from the third. fool me three times? fuck no
Demon Gaze. never buying another Experience game again but if the X1 game gets localized, bomba prices on the Marketplace for sure. these guys deserve pennies
Bioshock Infinite. awful, just awful
okay: Sin & Punishment: Star Successor

no one came up to me and said yo play these. I just looked at how GAF perceived these games. they've all been received well but I'd be none the wiser on actual quality. probably the most damning thing is I pay more games I hated than those I liked. S&P was only $20, no biggie. Hotline Miami was "free" from PS+, I only paid 20 bucks for FH2 by trading in old games that had no value, Bioshock was also "free" from PS+ and the rest were CEs with international shipping. I paid even more than I would have liked!

every other game I bought and hated is my own fault and GAF had no influence in those purchases. games like Project x Zone, Sonic Lost World, Virtue's Last Reward, the list goes on forever

Worst: MGSV I hate this game so much, tedious and boring as hell!
RDR but much worse! I'm at Mission 6 and already no joy anymore :-(

Oh god Demon Gaze Yeah. EASILY the worst. A whole bunch of good ones though so I'm not phased.

Best: Bloodborne, Platinum Games in general, Zero Escape Series

Worst: DEMON GAZE. Really bad.

Please play DR2. It's so much better.

Trust me, there seems to be a pattern of: If you had some fun with DR1 but didn't think it was ground breaking at all, you're going to love DR2. That seems to be a really consistent pattern over people I've talked to. I give DR1 around a 7/10 maybe 7.5, but DR2 is a solid 10 in my book.

Demon gaze is a pretty decent wizardry clone. Its not for everyone, especially if you are not familar with the genre. I couldnt beat eo4, but I beat demon gaze.

Worst for me was danganranpa 1. I guess I expected it to be better, but it ended up being insanely shallow. Fuck those characters.

Best: Danganronpa Series, Dark Souls

Worst: Monster Hunter

I fail to see how Monster Hunter is fun, everything about it just seems bad to me. It might just be that I hate the 3DS for having such garbage hardware and how it affects the games.

Lots of good recs over the years, hard to pick a "best" one.

Best recent one was Assault Android Cactus. Grabbed it in EA and it's only been getting better.

Worst (of all time!): MS Saga

150616-MS_Saga_-_A_New_Dawn_(USA)-3.jpg

so many great jRPGs on the PS2, and GAF recommends this turd

Worst: Persona 4 Golden. I just never knew what the hell was going on in this game, the days just kept ticking by and I felt like I wasn't playing it right or something. Got the the 2nd persona boss battle and just kept getting wrecked. I put it down and haven't looked back.

Have you tried using only one type of magic? Whatever shows up as a weakness is what you stick to. SMT relies on knowing their weakness and sticking to it.

Best: Corpse Party - sure it was on sale, I was interested before, but I was sold on it because of the thread.
House of the Dead Overkill was a good recommendation. I enjoyed 1-4 quite a bit over the years. I passed up on the Wii version.

Worst: I feel like Danganronpa was very much sold to everyone as this sleeper hit. I'm not saying everyone is to blame for it, but I couldn't get into it.

Best: The Evil Within

I honestly despised this game for the first 9 chapters. Then chapter 10 happened and it started to click with me.

Worst? I'll get back to you on that ...
