Neogaf's Game of the Generation

Not open for further replies.
I posted my list earlier in the thread but if I had to choose one singular experience it would be thee Super Mario Galaxy.

Its the epitome of level design and its gameplay is unmatched in its genre. Nothing even comes close. It re-invigorated and innovated a genre that felt like it had no new ideas left to show us. The music score is, not to sell it short, simply fantastic. The fully orchestrated mixes of long-time classics were beautiful. This game is also a testament to Nintendo's ability to create truly memorable experiences and remind us why they have survived so long. When Nintendo actually tries, they are better than everyone. These are the types of games and experiences that people remember.

Only GAF GOTYs from 2006 to 2013 (should a last-gen game win) should be eligible.

2006: Twilight Princess
2007: Super Mario Galaxy
2008: Metal Gear Solid 4
2009: Uncharted 2
2010: Mass Effect 2
2011: Portal 2
2012: Journey
2012: TBD

A game can't be GAF's game of the generation when it didn't even manage to win its own year.

Dark souls

Edit: maybe we should wait until this gen is over though. GTA V is not out yet for example

Some don't need to wait for GTA V or other games. Even if the game reaches San Andreas levels of experience, nothing will beat Dark Souls for me.

Only GAF GOTYs from 2006 to 2013 (should a last-gen game win) should be eligible.

What are GAF's GOTYs?
Edit: I see your edit and I don't agree with you. All games should be eligible for GOTG, even if they didn't manage to get GOTY. Just look how many people are voting for Dark Souls etc.

I bet my account that if we do a re-vote for 2011's GOTY, Dark Souls will win

EVE Online
Its the biggest game in terms of gameplay, its the biggest game in terms of scope and its the most free game of them at all, its also the most unique.

But it wont be mention by more than one/two people, because there is far to strong console AAA force on GAF, which thinks that cinematic, corridor and linear games are best what this industry has to offer.

A lot of people on gaf rarely post or only hang out in the OT section so Dark Souls will definitely face staunch competition. Its no guarantee.

do we have a good demons vs dark souls breakdown/thread? i love both, but would be interested in seeing arguments on both sides. dark's interconnectedness is amazing, but i remember more levels/bosses in demons' overall.

1. The Last of Us
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Uncharted 2
4. Xenoblade
5. Demon's Souls

this is a pretty tight list (still sleepin on xeno, but ill get around to it!), not often that i see SMG 1 over 2 though.

Because everyone plays a game the year it's released right?

The thing is that time can change collective perspective, bringing a previously hidden gem to the fore.

And whoever said Ni No Kuni should be killed, simple as that.

Either the Souls games or the Super Mario Galaxy games. I think I lean towards the former for the influence they've had in re-opening the floodgates for games that don't 100% coddle the player, but I could pretty much flip a coin.

Edit: Mirror's Edge for runner up. The only good skill-based platforming in an action/adventure in years, and probably the best.

My Game of the Generation would be something silly like Rocket Slime or Little King's Story. Shame that a vote for either of those two would be a vote thrown away.

While I agree with that sentiment, it's pretty obvious that the community appreciation of many games appear to go up and down as time passes. This thread alone makes Dark Souls look like a decent contender, but it didn't win the GAF GotY. I'm curious as to what causes this though. Sleeper hits? Hype trains losing steam? Good/bad word of mouth? E-cred? People catching up on older titles?

That said, I remember the 2008 GotY getting a re-vote later and MGS4 won that one all over again, in spite of thinking it wouldn't crack the top 5 anymore.

Demon's Souls

We should add a automate script that changes all Dark Souls answers to Demon's Souls. Not that the latter is not necessary better (though I guess most didn't play the original) but it's Demon's Souls 1.1 (in most respects) and it came out over two years later.
Demon's Souls was a silent revolution.

I'd say The Last Of Us.
This generation was for me a step forward especially in cinematics and (mature) story telling and merging gameplay with the story to emphasize the story and achieve a more intense experience.

The Last Of Us mastered all that and I think it'll be a point of reference for years to come.

Dark Souls easily

Changed singleplayer games completely. Game is perferct from start to end.
Also it made medieval RPGs interesting for me again.

A fair point. How much time should be allowed to pass before the collective perspective has been allowed to mature on the games released in 2013?

The GAF GOTY took a hard hit to its credibility on that dark day. :/

For me it would be Skyward Sword, without question. But I assume when it comes to the official thread it will be a vote of a top 10 or similar. Should be very interesting.

I wonder if it will include everything DS/PSP/Wii/360/PS3 and PC since the first of those consoles launched (DS I assume).

I'm guessing the official consensus on the start date of the last generation was the 360 launch in November 2005. Console-centric board and all that.

I'm surprised by the Demon's Souls > Dark Souls stuff. I thought the consensus was the other way around.
I think Dark Souls is vastly superior, but that's just me!

I think most fans of the Souls series consider Dark Souls the superior game. Surely not all of them but for most I believe that's true, it's also what I personally believe, however, Demon's Souls was the game that set the standards and brought most of the innovations that made Dark Souls.

I don't think it's a matter of Dark Souls being the inferior game, but it was simply not the game that put most of the innovation on the table.

I really need to get off my ass and play Dark Souls sometime.

Not sure how I'd answer this question yet. New Vegas and Dungeons of Dredmor are two that come to mind immediately, but as I've thought about it I can't help but consider Human Revolution. Something about that game really captured me, and for all its flaws I couldn't put it down until it was over even though I took my sweet time getting there. That doesn't happen all that often for me anymore, and I am not even a particularly huge fan of the original Deus Ex or its sequel.

This used to be Mario Galaxy, but now it's definitely Dark Souls. I can't think of another game that impressed me so much in every aspect (art, enemy variety & design, world, lore, design & gameplay). I played it more than any other game as well. Demon's was incredible, but Dark was even better. There's no game I'm looking forward to more than DaS II.

Dark Souls. Bioshock Infinite sure is close due to its story, imagination, and yes I liked the gameplay just fine, but as a pure gaming experience, few games I've ever played in my time thus far have given me the experience that Dark Souls did.

I thought it be best if we did a big high quality Game of the Generation thread, like timetokill/cheesemeister do every year, then just listing off games or whatever with no format. You could have a top 10 instead of just one, explain why you love 'em, get all ya nice pictures, ya know

Sometimes after the generation is over, perhaps halfway through the next year

Well this is what I proposed in my OP.

If only people bothered to read them before replying. It's the one thing I hate about Neogaf. Sigh. I guess it can't be helped.

i would be okay with heading up a games o' the generation thread. i think timetokill/cheesemeister would be better doing the honors since they don't do everything manually.

however if we're doing that, i think the best time might be about a year from now, once all the current-gen releases are mostly out.

i wanted to do one with the ps2/gc/xbox/dc/gba gen, but the ps2 kept on going. i mean, persona 4 happened in late 2008. i suppose now would be a good experiment or a leadup to something from this gen. the tricky part would be pc games. is 1998-2004 a good mark for the pc/gc/xbox/dc/gba gen? it basically encompasses the dreamcast through the xbox, and half-life to half-life 2.
