Neogaf's Game of the Generation

Demon's Souls has some big advantages over Dark Souls. The level design is consistently good, with none of the Lost Izalith-style big boring areas with nothing in them. The game feels more finished, with no boss fights that are break the mechanics like the Centipede Demon. I like the tone and atmosphere of both games, but Demon's Souls has a different style that may appeal to some people more with its gloomy greyness.

I prefer Dark Souls by a large margin, but Demon's also had a better risk-reward system with going human; by giving you extra health and not just unreliable coop, it was a real incentive to go human and take the invasion risk that goes with that.

Of course it was a little undermined by the harsh tendency punishment so I just stayed in spirit form anyway, but giving more health in human form is something that definitely needs to come back for DS2, especially so we can get more people whining about forced pvp. Sweet delicious tears.

I am assuming the generation in question is Wii/PS3/360/DS/PSP. In that case my top 5 are:

Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Xenoblade Chronicles
Bayonetta
Red Dead Redemption
Zelda: Skyward Sword

Runner Ups:

Dark Souls
Gears of War
Uncharted 2
Sin and Punishment: Star Successor
Donkey Kong Country Returns

My game of this generation is easily Skyrim, I have sunk 200+ hours into the Xbox and 100+ hours into the PC version and still going.

Valkyria Chronicles. Beautiful art, wonderful story that illicits emotions even on a tenth playthrough, enduring characters, fun gameplay. If i could only keep one game from this gen it would be it.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Uncharted 2
Super Meat Boy
The Last of Us
Portal 2

That is in no particular order. Honestly, Portal 2 might take the cake for me. I was moved to tears during the end.
Standing in the field. So many feels. So many, many feels.

I see what you did there.

Too early for this. Still plenty of games coming out, especially on the PS3. And personally, I have a huge backlog to catch up on.

If I had to vote right now, it would either be Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time or Valkyria Chronicles. Both virtually flawless games and absolute joys from start to finish. Don't know if I could choose between the two. It would mainly depend on my mood.

I might give Valkyria Chronicles the edge due to being a new IP.

For me it's a question between which of Naughty Dogs games were the best, but I don't think there's any real question for me...

The Last of Us

Other very great games of this gen (for me)
Red Dead Redemption
Uncharted 2 and 3
MGS4
COD4

People who missed out on this can't even be considered gamers:

oh no! i'm not a gamer because I didn't buy a wii...

maybe I should pick one up so I can waggle myself to true-gamerness

Demons Souls of course.

Only game this gen which evoked wonderment in me reminiscent of my earliest gaming experiences.

Plenty of other greatness of course but DS takes it for me.

Uncharted 2 for me, was addicted to that for ages.

Super Mario Galaxy as runner up.

honorable mention for call of duty 4 modern warfare, changed the gen for shooters after it got released

My number one favorite game this generation is Mass Effect 2. Nothing else captured my attention as much as this game. The perfect way to make a sequel.

Runner-ups:
Dark Souls
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Super Street Fighter IV
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Infamous 2
Batman: Arkham City
Assassin's Creed II
Dragon Age: Origins
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

That dudes ridiculous statement and sarcasm aside, you really should play Super Mario Galaxy if you can. They're really, really incredible games.

Nintendo polished them to hell and back and the charm is straight up gushing out.

It's worth buying a discounted used Wii for.

My favorite this gen were Portal 2, Uncharted 3 (yeah didn't wrote that wrong) and Xenoblade, in this order.

Very close to them are Zelda Skyward Sword, Mario Galaxy 2 and Kid Icarus Uprising.

Red Dead Redemption. Fucking stunning game, the sequel will cause earthquakes. Other games that blew me away were Zelda (Wii), Mass Effect series (yes the all three games!) and Dragon Age: Origins (PC)

Also I really NEED to get around to playing TLoU .. :((

State of Decay.

The single best survival sim I've ever played. The world is incredible, the music is phenomenal and the characters are all fleshed out and have depth. It's just incredible and has set the bar for all future post zombie apocalyptic survival games.

I think you'll find you're wrong. Plenty of people, myself included (see my post above), played Demon's Souls first and still acknowledge that Dark is better.

Honestly, I don't know.

Objectively, it was a bigger more polished production, that's what I acknowledge. More money were thrown into it, it had a bigger world etc. But Demon's Souls felt a little more warm as a game, the nexus, the world tendency mechanic, the more ruthless black phantoms, the healing items, each world specialized in either xp grinding, mineral farming, item farming, plague baby farming.
the angry christmas tree
at the end. It had a very cohesive concept overall, even thought the world was not connected.

Dark Souls
Bayonetta
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Red Dead Redemption

Honorable Mention: EXCITE TRUCK!!!
