NeoGAF's Most Disappointing Games and Sequels

Gotta disagree about Soul Reaver. I was dissapointed by the lack of boss fights, but that was the only really glaring omission. In my opinion, the story of Soul Reaver 2 is told far better than it was in Soul Reaver 1 (which is really saying something, as Soul Reaver 1 had one of the most fantastically well told stories I've seen in a game).

I agree. Best story ever told. Now, Blood Omen II on the other hand...

Quake 2 and up
Double Dragon 2
Mortal Kombat 3
Black & White 2

I guess that's about it, like most others I could probably go on and on but I don't have the time!

Some of these have been said already but here are the biggest ones for me:

Xenogears --> Xenosaga Series: Urgh. Sucked all the flavor out of Xenogears and made it feel incredibly dry. As soon as I heard they were going to attempt seven of these games I had the sinking feeling that they were all going to suck.

Chrono Trigger --> Chrono Cross: It might've been fine as it's own RPG without the tie-ins to Chrono Trigger but by using the namesake it generated a lot of hype and couldn't even come close to living up to it. Not a bad game but definitely lacking the charm Chrono Trigger had.

Secret of Mana --> Legend of Mana: Nothing like a game so easy that retarded blind baby pigs could play it.

Metroid Prime --> Metroid Prime 2: Strange how intriguing Prime was and then how boring and dreadful Prime 2 was. Maybe I'm in the minority on this issue, but I absolutely hate any sort of dark/poison-type world that uses your health (or life) as a timer. Let me enjoy the gameworld you created, don't make me rush through it.

Mario 64 --> Mario Sunshine: Sunshine definitely felt repetitive and sloppy to me. One of those games I had to force myself to get through because I just didn't care about seeing what tedious task came next.

Resident Evil 3 --> Resident Evil 4: Nah.. just kidding. But I imagine someone out there has got to feel that way.

All X-com sequels
Master of Orion 3
Ultima 8 & 9 - What the hell happened? Ultima 7 was the pinnacle of role playing games IMO, but 8 & 9 just suck so bad, it's incomprehensible..
Battlefield Vietnam - It's very similar to BF1942, but I just don't enjoy this game at all.
Crazy Taxi 2
Mario Sunshine
All 3D castlevanias - not sure if they are considered sequels.
GTA San Andreas
Suikoden 4 and 5

Fullmetal Alchemist 2: Cut-scenes and voice-acting were good, but it got annoying hearing: Ed-"AL" Al-"Coming", every freaking time.

Pokemon Stadium 2: It felt like the same as the first game but with added pokemon and more modes.

Arc the Lad 4: Battle system and voice-acting sucked arse. Part 1-3 were way better.

Digimon World 2: Boring and the were force to use gifts to get more Digimon.

Others:
Megaman 5-7
DBZ budokai 2: Board game with fighting elements...:lol
Slyphon Filter 4: offline sucks

I have to go with Metroid Prime Echoes on that. The game was so a pain in the ass to play, multiplying by two the back and forth gameplay - the first one wasn't already a smooth game to play but that was too much to tolerate. The multiplayer option was ridiculous too, I still understand how can this be fun.

I did a quick search but didn't see anything- the Top 10 is going strong but "worst of's" are always much more interesting. After thinking it occurred to me that most of the games I hated the most were poorly put together sequels, though your mileage may vary.please post a short description of WHY you didn't enjoy a game...pages of lists with no explanation can get a bit...dry.

here's mine, in no particular order:

Castlevania II NES In retrospect, I can see what they were TRYING to do with the game, but I don't think enough thought was put into it. The game is time-limited but no one really bothers to tell you this, and quite a few of the puzzles were extremely vague and poorly thought out. The game was non linear, but it was possible to get certain items TOO early, get stuck in an area with no way back, and have to restart. ugly! I'd like to see the formula redone someday with competent developers.

THAT IS SOOOO WRONG...what are you smoking:lol If it wasnt for C2, Symphony of the night would have not existed.

They need to remake Castlevania II sooooo bad it's ridiculous. I love it, but I hate it. It's just so obscure and annoying for the most part, but on the other hand I love the overall feel and atmosphere of the game unlike any other CV.

I still have a ton of shit to do and I have over 120 hours on my game clock. Does it have a super deep battle system? Not hugely. I'm just talking about the overall depth of the game... there's a ridiculous amount of stuff to be done.

long hours not equal to depth..

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Just didnt like the layout or the gameplay changes, I found the masks and time cycle a pain in the arse also.

Prince of Persia Warrior Within took all the charm and magic from the first game and turned it into some glorified rock hard action game, hope ubi fired the person responsible.

Perfect Dark Zero dont need to comment on this disaster.

Halo 2 Single Player felt constricted, the openness of Halo was missing for me and the story took a nose dive rapidly, I also missed the pistol and assault rifle from the first game.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within- The first game felt like it was a storybook or something reminiscent of a classic Disney film. This game sucked the magic out of the series and turned it into something really generic. Plus, the bugs were so bad I had to restart the game 2/3rds of the way through it. After that, I was always afraid of running into another glitch that I had to constantly save over and over again. Weird glitches like missing enemies, lack of sound, misplaced pillars and other part of the environment really hurt the overall experience for me.
BLACK- Note to developers and the entire gaming industry: STOP using the term [insert game here]-killer. It will only serve the product more harm than good. A truly good game should be judged on its own merits. I still remember the OPM cover stating that it could be PS2 last great game. Oh, and the lack of multiplayer was a BIG mistake.
Dead to Rights II- Man, I still don't understand how they managed to screw that one up so badly. They could've just the exact same game and it still would've turned out better. I remember how promising it looked from the GI issue. Then came the delays and the unexplained(and unnecessary) design choices. I couldn't believe what I was playing when I rented it. It was almost unrecognizable.
Max Payne 2(PS2)- One of the worst ports I played last gen. Really lazy job. So bad that I ended up trading it in for the PC version.

Probably has been mentioned numerous times before but Devil May Cry 2 takes the cake for biggest gaming disappointment ever.

I had such high hopes after playing the 2D versions....

Battlefield 2142 - Focus more on vehicles than infantry, and was very "been there, done that three times" without any cool new weapons. Who knows, maybe people will kill each other the same way 150 years from now.

Virtua Fighter 3 - Slow, ugly, and broken.

Cosmic Rift - Horrible pseudo sequel to Subspace.

Doom 3 - A technical demo for an engine that was quickly eclipsed by the Unreal 3 engine, leaving Todd Hollenshead crying about piracy.

World of Warcraft - Sucks to MMORPG's.

The Curse of Monkey Island - Game design hack Tim Schaeffer used politics to drive LucasArts's #1 game designer, Ron Gilbert, off the lot resulting in two vastly inferior Monkey sequels, namely this and Escape from Monkey Island. I am rarely this dissappointed in a game.

King's Quest:Mask of Eternity - not bad as a generic 3rd person action-adventure, but totally lacking as a King's Quest. This, more than any other game in my opinion, signalled the death of Sierra for good (just for the record, Sierra as a physical entity stopped existing in 1999 - what you see today is just a label).

Ultima 8:Pagan - What the hell? You turn one of the greatest RPG series of all time into a dumbed-down action adventure? And then you add confusing puzzles, rubbish controls and ridiculous inventory juggling that don't gel with this new direction? Ultima died right here. And let's not even start on the glitches! (Follow-up Ultima 9 tried hard to fix the brand, but it was too little too late.)

Police Quest:Open Season - Police Quest 1-3 remains my favourite gaming trilogy of all time. Then Ken Williams pisses off game designer Jim Walls (an ex-cop) by courting former L.A. police chief Daryl F. Gates behind his back. Walls leaves Sierra and we're left with this piece of crap - high on realism but low on entertainment and actual fun. At least they left traditional PQ main character Sonny Bonds out of it.

Yeah, good choice, this game was a total disaster after a really good first game, could have been a potentially solid franchise for Namco but they really screwed it up, lost the challenge, gameplay, and level design that made the first one fun.

1. Burnout 3: Burnout 2 was great, but they ruined everything. Changes to crash mode, EAtrax, more focus on crashing than racing etc.

2. Deus ex 2

3. Battlefield 2142: Buggy and generic.

Horrible games. The first two Twisted Metals were great, once 989 took over the series turned into garbage. Thankfully the proper people came back to make another great TM in Black. These two games are so bad, I refuse to believe they exist.

Other failures:

1080 Avalanche
Star Fox Assault
Perfect Dark Zero
Jak II
Ratchet Deadlocked
Syphon Filter Omega Strain
I never knew there was a twisted metal 3 and 4, only 1, 2 and black on ps2... Did 3 and 4 ever leave america?
