The Brood

I second the The Brood (classic horror).

I'd probably add Society as well (possibly to comedic horror). I'm not quite sure I would say the entire movie is "must see", the last 20 mins or so definitely is. Just take look at this. (*NSFW* and spoiler, I guess)

I didn't really like 'Let The Right One In'. I cant exactly pinpoint why, but theres just some things you dont like. I dont think I was compelled by the relationship of the two really. Its probably the best vampire adaptation which was unfortunately overshadowed by the garbage of twilight and vampired diaries, but I'll probably never watch it again. Moral of the story, vampires arent my thing.

Seconding:
Jaws (how is this not in the OP yet?)
Cat People (not really scary, but an important early work in the genre)

Recommending:

Re-Animator (Classic/Vintage) - 1985 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089885/
Cosmis Bus mentioned this one in his post about From Beyond, but I don't see it in the OP and didn't notice anyone suggesting it.

Pretty much anything else I would have suggested has already been mentioned.

OP updated. Jaws is up there, I think people are missing my Thriller post which is directly under the OP :lol

Skimmed through the thread again and haven't seen these posted:

The Strangers (2008)

It's probably the scariest movie from the past five years that I can think of. Another movie that absolutely deserves to be on the list is:

The Exorcist III (1990)

A great movie, unlike the previous garbage sequel. I actually prefer this over the original Exorcist. Plus, it has one of the single greatest scare scenes in movie history.

I saw the Strangers recently, really liked it. Thought it was lacking something though, I felt it was cut short or something. One of those real life situations where I would freak out exactly like the people in the movie, I'm pretty sure everybody would.

I always loved horror movies in the vein of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Where kids get lost in the woods and get chased after some crazy cannibal killers and you just want them to GTFO of there. Its the best when they get captured in the house and they are about to escape. Thats a huge adrenaline rush. And the gore is always a pleasure.

Whats scarier than a 300lb retarded butcher cannibal that wears peoples faces and can run faster than you can? O yea, he also runs with a fucking chainsaw.

I haven't watched The Strangers but I have read that Ils (Them) is a better movie with the same premise. I have seen that movie and I quite liked it.

You should check Frontier(s) then. I think is equal to High Tension in the gore/blood department.

Oh, and Saw 1 barely had any gore...

Frailty (2001)
- Modern (2000-Onwards)

One of the best films of the decade IMO and one of McConaughey's last truly interesting performances - right before he became a "breakout star."

Edit: Already posted, so consider this me seconding it. Add it, OP. :)

I think the categories should be a bit more specific

The Sixth Sense (1999) - seconded

Docu-Thriller
The Blair Witch Project (1999) - seconded
Cloverfield (2008) - I think it's in the second post.

Monster Horror
Predator (1987) - seconded

Creepy/Weird Horror or Family Horror
Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)

I should be doing hw said:
Until later retooling I'll keep Thriller movies as ones where no protagonists die. Should make this a tad easier for now unless I think otherwise.

Isn't this statement pretty much a spoiler then? It kinda takes away from the whole thriller aspect you know.

Just watched this yesterday. Not horror, maybe a psychological thriller.

It's about a schizophrenic man trying to find his daughter with a murder investigation intertwined in the story.

Stir of Echoes

Nice paranormal movie.

The Entity (1981)

The luscious Barbara Hershey is raped and attacked by a ghost. Scared the crap out of me as a kid.

There's a blast from the past. Wouldn't know it by the name but you never forget a ghost-rape, and this movie had several.

Italian Horror!

Dario Argento
Suspiria (1977)
Inferno (1980)

Lucio Fulci
Zombi 2 (1979)
The Beyond (1981)
City of the Living Dead (1980)
The House by the Cemetery (1981)

And I'd say that the Italian giallo deserves a section of its own, as it had a major influence on the slasher genre.

Mario Bava
Blood and Black Lace (1964)

Dario Argento
The Bird with the Crystal Plummage (1970)
Deep Red (1975)
Tenebre (1982)

Sergio Martino
Torso (1973)

Lucio Fulci
A Lizard in a Woman's Skin (1971)

I should change that because most of those movies don't follow that rule :lol Also if you want to fix the categories to be more specific, then by all means do it and I'll gladly post it in the OP.

What is a good one I can get on Netflix instant tonight?
Fuck you people and your Netflix and highspeed internets!

Thought I'd add these as well:

Videodrome (1983) I'd say Classic/Vintage for that one, could be thriller though.

Dead Ringers (1988) Thriller... though maybe Classic/Vintage, but it's a stretch

The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) comedic horror, directed by and starring Roman Polanski

The Hitcher
(1986) Classic/Vintage

Lost Highway (1997) Thriller

This thread is awesome. I had no clue GAF was home to this many horror fans. Scanning through here I'm seeing some awesome stuff that I haven't busted out in a while. Frailty for example has been in my collection since its release and I probably haven't watched it since 03'.

Glad to see some love for "Behind the Mask: The rise of Leslie Vernon. If anyone wants to see some campy gore I recommend:

A few I've watched recently that most will think are crap but a few may enjoy.

The collector: is cheesy and has plot holes but is a decent gory thriller and I loved it

case 39: is kind of predictable but creepy as hell at times

dread: is a slow burning thriller I suppose but has some good psychological scenes at the end

the scariest film easily in my opinion is Stephen kings it though, damn I hate clowns (awful second half though)

A great classic psychological horror film is The Innocents (1961). Based on Henry James' Turn of the Screw, and the screenplay was co-written by Truman Capote. Nothing gory or jumpy but some creepy, dream-like imagery and dark themes that have really stuck with me since I saw this at the cinema a few years ago. Also it has a very cool and classy DVD release (in the UK at least) from the BFI.

The Shining is there, look beneath the OP. And yes this thread does need more discussion now that the OP is healthy (no where near done though). I'll put up a few more movies today some time.
@It: Its just fun to watch, something about 80's Horror movies that you can't find in today's. Tim Curry is awesome too :D

I'm a fan of the scary movie genre. :)

Of course, most of these may or may not be as scary for some of you. But yeah, seeing some of the mentions here, I thought they were tame compared to a few I've seen out of this list (hence for some of the weak mentions) but then again, not everyone is freaking scared of ghosts for no reason like I am. And of course, most of these aren't as in high regard for some either. I could had included the Wickerman but that's more of a comedy is it? ;) Hopefully this list will remind anyone of an old movie.

Pardon me if I missed a few of your favorite entries. But yes, I love this thread already. There's plenty of mentions I haven't seen yet! :D

Oh? Yeah I figured I haven't seen enough gore to be able to classify it better. And yeah, I'm sure few other mentions are classified wrong too in theme but I was going with the ending sequence as I could recall.

Bit of a long shot as I didn't want to create a new topic for it.

I remember a while back in a thread very similar to this someone posted a trailer for an 80s horror/thriller (maybe early 90s), and all I remember was it was the title was about 5 letters long and began with M.

In the trailer you see someone running and at the end they come to a swimming pool and there's a body lying in it (then the trailer ends).

Very atmospheric and I'd like to track it down if possible... Anyone know the film I mean?

Modern Thriller-I think the movie Mindhunters is serves as a pretty good thriller not too many have heard about. Maybe people avoided it because Val Kilmer and Christian Slater are in the film lol, who knows. I was kinda surprised by it to be honest.

Was gonna chastise GAF for ignoring the majority of great pulpy Euro, mostly Italian and Spanish murder-mystery-thriller-horror films, the Giallo genre. Good thing for Trombone Zombie covering a lot of great ones.

Just rattling off a list of some of the best in the genre, mostly from the 70s:

Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key
The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh
Case of the Scorpion's Tail
Scorpion with Two Tails
Who Saw Her Die?
What Have They Done to Solange?
All the Colors of the Dark
Case of the Bloody Iris
Red Queen Kills Seven Times
Seven Notes in Black/The Psychic
Don't Torture a Duckling
Five Dolls for an August Moon
The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave
House with Laughing Windows
Terror at the Opera
Tenebrae
Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Suspiria
Inferno
Phenomena
Demons
Demons 2
Nightmare City
Torso
Night Train Murders
Kidnapped

Will sort them in an edit later on.

Is that the movie where the gif of Bale flipping out in the car is from? It must be because its just hit me that it's Kilmer in the seat next to him.
I fucking love you if this is that movie, I've wanted to know for ages.
I seriously need to fix the OP soon.

Maybe if some Horror-GAF members are up to it we should do some Horror nights where we pick a movie from the reccomended list and then dish on it the next day. If that was planned well I'm sure it would be awesome, I know I'd love to do it. Not organise it though :lol

Elaborate? I'd think if they mentioned ghost-rape in IB I would have picked it up.
