Yeah this is going to be one of the topics that no one reads anyone's responses and just posts their lists. I could say my favorite game was "Rubber monkey chumble spuz, you know RMCS." And no one would notice.

Halo
Metroid Prime
Ocarina of Time
Ninja Gaiden Black
Resident Evil 4
Yoshi's Island
Chrono Trigger

I would add in Goldeneye, for the fun times it delivered, and it's still pretty fun with four friends, but the game has aged so horribly it can only muster an honorable mention at best. No other games jump into my mind like the ones I've already listed, so I'll leave it as that.

No particular order:

Starcraft
Sim City (couldn't pick any specific game in the series so I'll just pick the original)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario 64
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Tetris
Halo: Combat Evolved

All games were picked based on the fun and replay value they have had over the years I have owned them. And yeah I couldn't come up with 3 more games that deserved to be listed with these 7 so I'll just stop here.

This thread will NOT end well.

#10: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
#9: Resident Evil 4
#8: Final Fantasy VIII
#7: Earthbound
#5 (tie): Skies of Arcadia
#5 (tie): Baten Kaitos Origins
#4: Metroid Prime
#3: Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
#1 (tie): The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
#1 (tie): The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Tetris
Super Metroid
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
Final Fantasy 6
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Metal Gear Solid

Honorable Mentions:
Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution, Bionic Commando, Chrono Trigger, Contra 3, Zelda II, Valkyrie Profile, Puyo Puyo franchise, Final Fantasy Tactics, Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons.

My personal list of all time faves:

Space Invaders (Arcade) - the one that started it all for me. pure hynotic panic. And later followed by intense pocket-money depleting addiction to Pheonix, Galaxians and Galaga.

Twin Kingdom Valley (Acorn Electron) - brilliant puzzle-based fantasy text 'n' gfx adventure from Bug Byte (!). I remember my brother and I never quite made it to the end (a few gold short of the mysterious final possible number). I LOVED the atmosphere of this game but saving your position was a pain in the as I seem to remember it took about 15-20 mins to save on the tape player!

The Faery Tale Adventure (Amiga) - a massive, seamless scrolling fantasy world all on a single floppy disk. It's strange, even though action RPGs such as Zelda and Secret of Mana, etc were more advanced, their worlds never pulled me in in the same way as this did. I really liked the art style and it was huge...

Elite (Acorn Electron, BBC) - STILL the best 3D space action epic ever made. And from 1984. I will never forget seeing the first screens of this in C&VG and rejoicing in the knowledge that it was also on its way to the Electron. My brother and I found it in my mum and dad's stash of Xmas prezzies weeks before Xmas, and played it to death without them ever finding out. We simply couldn't wait...

R-Type (Arcade / PC Engine) - the best side-scrolling shooter ever made. Beautiful, stylish and devilishly ingenious. Worth the price of a PC Engine all by itself.

Gunsmoke (Arcade) - criminally overlooked super hard, super well designed vertical western shooter. most people just don't get this how good this game is... best played with an arcade stick.

Rygar (Arcade) - another overlooked and strangely underplayed game - probably due to its difficulty. This, for me was Tecmo's best ever title - the bi-directional movement and great use of jumping combined to create incredible dexterity that reminds more of something like Defender than a hack n slash. A joystick is best with this one, too. It was fast, rewarding (with subtle but necessary power-ups) and had amazing graphics for its time and bassy sound effects and music. No game has ever 'THWOMPED' as deeply as this one. I only wish they'd opened it up a little and provided more variety in the environments.

Out Run (arcade) - What else can be said? No arcade racer has ever enticed me to finish every single route of its maps. I was in awe of this incredible game (and particularly its music). Sega's best game ever?

The Sentinel (Amiga) - Geoff Crammond's classic was the most paranoia-laden first-person puzzle / platform game. In terms of sheer immersiveness, think this game blows away almost any 3D next gen title with just a bunch of slow-scrolling polygons. Games need to get way more weird and tripped out these days.

GTAIII (PS2) - a breakthrough not only in free-form sandbox mechanics but in pure, unadulterated FUN. As compulsive as crack, and probably as fun as any proper toy set I had as a kid. Er... but with more guns and death.

I have a hard time ordering stuff, so I`ll just list my top 10 in no particular order

- Super Mario World
- Skies of Arcadia
- Super Metroid
- Castlevania Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
- Zelda: Link to the Past
- DooM
- Sam and Max: Hit the Road

Devil May Cry. Self explanatory.

Day of Defeat. The best half life mod period.

Dawn of War. it's the new Starcraft, once you've played it at a lan with friends you will swear by it.

Metal Gear Solid. Again, self explanatory.

Operation Flashpoint. The game that proved you could strike the perfect balance between gameplay and realism.

Resident Evil 2. **** re4.

Chrono Trigger. A truly timeless game, just as enjoyable today as it was more than 10 years ago.

Forgotten Hope, what battlefield 1942 should have been.

Relooking at the thread title, I decided to make a list on what I think NeoGAF as a whole thinks are the 10 games ever. There will of course be some dissent, but whatever.

In no particular order.

Shadow of the Colossus
God of War
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Metal Gear Solid 3
Mario 64
Final Fantasy VI
Devil May Cry 3
ICO
God of War II (I know, it's not really even out yet, lol)
REmake
Resident Evil 4

I know's more than 10, but some I couldn't leave out.

Here are 10 games that are coming to my head:

Half-Life
System Shock 2
Deus Ex
Espgaluda
Twilight Princess
beatmania IIDX (12th Style CS if I have to choose)
Thief
Quake III
Monkey Island 2
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike

I'm not fully confident that this is a list of 10 games that I'd say are better than everything else out there, but it's an attempt.

1. Final Fantasy 6 - I've probably played through this game more times than any other game I've ever touched.

2. Zelda TP - Could be interchanged with Zelda OoT, I consider they about equal, but I think TP might have been a better gaming experience for me.

3. Mario 3 - I've played this a ton as well, and I don't think I could become bored with this title. It's my favorite Mario by far.

4. Half Life 2 (I'm going to include the episodes with this) - An excellent experience, and it constructs a very in depth world.

5. Gears of War - The single player was very fun and replayable thanks to the co-op, and the multiplayer is very intense, yet intimate due to the small teams.

6. Shadow of the Colossus - The story was very well told, and the colossus battles were memorable and unique.

7. Tetris DS - This might seem like kind of a strange addition, but I'm a huge tetris fan, and the ability to play it online was a godsend for me. I've played this more than any other DS game so far.

8. Mario RPG - I loved this game so much, it was incredibly polished. Mario and Luigi might be the better overall RPG, but nostalgia beats that down.

9. Halo 2 - The single player was flawed, and was a bit inferior compared to the first Halo, but it had one of the best online experiences I've ever had.

10. Final Fantasy Tactics - Holy shit did I love this game, the story was fantastic, the gameplay was fantastic, and it had a lot of depth.

Your inclusion of Third Strike makes me happy in my pants.

1 - street fighter 3 3rd strike (best fighter i ever played, my desert island game)
1 - Half Life 2 (has done narrative better than any other action game to date IMO, also excellent characters who i want save and a amazing sense of atmosphere. Tied for my favourite game ever and thats on its own without CS or anything)
3 - super mario bros. (the first game i played on a home console)
4 - shinobi (one of the first arcade games i remember playing, also had the super cool ninja star bonus stages)
5 - wonder boy SMS (first console game i owned, i hateed the skateboard as a child, died everytime i got it)
6 - the legend of zelda (the first game i played which was completely different to traditional arcade games)
7 - broken sword (one of my earliest PC experiences, i was most impressed by the narrative, voice acting and the real time events)
8 - Daytona USA arcade (holds up better than any early 3d game ought, more enjoyable than any other arcade racer still)
9 - ICO (The first game which created an emotional attatchment to its characters for me, also simply gorgeous)
10 - gears of war (has created the most fun and foul mouthed LAN experience i have ever had, nothing more satisfying then chainsawing mates with some beers)

more japanese then i thought my top 10 would be.
