1 Robotica*Robotics

Even if it is a short it is one of the best love stories written in anime. The nature of the love between robots and how they come to grow closer even when faced with the circumstances they embrace always brings a tear to my eye, it is so gorgeous and so well done. Really makes you think about the meaning of love and if love between robots can truly exist.

4 Sekaiichi Hatsukoi
5 Glasslip

Love your list but that Glasslip ending.

1. Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen - beautiful and tragic, something everyone should watch even if they haven't touched the rest of the franchise. sogood
2. Spice & Wolf
3. G Gundam
4. Princess Nine
5. School Days

1. Clannad After Story
2. Your Lie In April
3. Touch
4. Rurouni Kenshin (specifically the OVA)
5. Honey and Clover

Honorable mention to Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. Great show.

I wish this was open for manga as well, Molester Man and Masturbation Master Kurosawa deserve to top the list.

Even though MMK is more of a coming of age story than a romance.

5. School Days

Good sir, do you enjoy watching characters experience NTR? Personally, I can appreciate the texture such nuanced feelings add to the general concept of love. I find it highly captivating and entertaining. You seem like a like-minded attractive and extremely intelligent individual no?

I don't watch too much romance anime show and my favorite romance stuff is coming from manga so, it won't count here. As of now, this is my list of anime romance I already watch which I think is my top 5 romance anime I have watch as of now.

1) Spice and Wolf
2) Emma A Victorian Romance
3) Princess Nine
4) Ah! My Goddess!
5) The Vision of Escaflowne

Special mention anime that didn't get to the list.
Ai Yori Aoshi - Only the 1st 4 episodes where you see the beautiful romance between the two main characters in this show. After than that, it goes downhill.

1. Steins;Gate
2. Toradora
3. Clannad AS
4. Kokoro Connect
5. 5 centimeters per second

Special mentions: Bakemonogatari, The Girl Who leapt through time, White Album 2, Chuunibyou season 1 and TWOGK.

Honestly, haven't seen many romance-only shows.

Hm, it's actually surprisingly tough to come up with good romance anime. The first two are obvious for me, but after that...

1. Nodame Cantabile
2. Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen
3. The World God Only Knows
4. Bakemonogatari
5. Toradora

I suppose.

Nodame season 1 is just perfection in my opinion. Such a beautiful ending.

1. White Album 2 - This one tears your heart out, and stomps on it. I was destroyed after watching it
2. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU
3. Toradora
4. Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions (season one)
5. Please Teacher - I'd say that I like this one a lot more than most people though, it has definitely aged

Probably something like that. There are a bunch of shows I have yet to watch tho, like Clannad and Spice & Wolf.

SNAFU is more of a deconstruction of romance than actual romance heh but good list mate, I forgot to mention WA2 and Chuunibyou (only season 1).

1.Nana
Because it got the biggest emotional response out of me by infuriating me to no end.

2.Nodame cantabile

3. Paradise Kiss

1. Clannad After Story: It's sad as all hell. Actually my whole list has stories with a lot of trauma or tragedy. This was just the best executed tragedy.
2. 5 cm per second (movie)
3. The Girl who Leapt Through Time (movie)
4. Steins;Gate
5. Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal

6. Usagi Drop (manga)

1. His and Her Circumstances
2. Nodame Cantabile
3. School Rumble
4. Katanagatari
5. Cross Game

His and Her Circumstances had the characters I could most identify with.

Kenshiro and Yuria! T_T.

YURIAAAAA!!

ken-yuria.jpg

1. Oreimo - Not a joke entry, the growing relationship between Kirino and Kyousuke is what grabbed me, then I guess there's some romance stuff with second place girl.
2. Lovely Complex
3. Plastic Memories
4. Kimikiss Pure Rouge
5. Candy Boy

Runners up: Golden Time, B gata H Kei, Clannad, Spice and Wolf.

People keep on mentioning Clannad. I'll give it a shot.

It is amazing. Season 1 is mostly school life stuff, but After Story continues into adult life. It is a rollercoaster of emotions, be prepared.

Also, I find it hilarious that you can tell who has read the manga/LN for some of the anime based o n their comments, lol.

1 whisper of the heart
2. Planetes
3 toradora
4 I can't understand what my husband is saying
5 5cm p second

Actually on second thought bump I can't understand to number one. Best romance.

If were taking manga, best manga is nana to kaoru

Where are all the votes for Maison Ikkoku? MI should be #1 on all these lists.

I've always been disappointed MI never found a real fanbase in America. Godai is one of the great manga/anime protagonists, and probably the best character Takahashi has created.

1. Nodame Cantabile - just overall excellent, excellent series. The romance aspect is actually quite low-key (in comparison to some other examples I'm mentioning below), but it's no small feat to bring such outrageous characters together and make it both believable and rootable. Of course the story (and supporting cast) surrounding them is very interesting and hilarious on its own. Cannot be recommended enough.

2. Nana - since we're ranking anime (and not anime/manga), it's going to be second place. It's a tragedy that the series was never finished and although in the end it did become a little too melodramatic for my taste, it still handles its romantic subplots in an exquisite way. Sometimes it even hit a little too close home.

3. Paradise Kiss - honestly it would be no. 1, but while the manga is my favorite of all time, the anime just doesn't compare. It still has the best, most realistic characters and relationships I've ever seen in the medium.

4. Revolutionary Girl Utena - it does other things much better then the romance, this is why it's so low in my ranking. I still maintain that it's one of the best anime ever created, extremely smart and creative. (I want Bryan Fuller live-action adaptation)

5. Victorian Romance Emma - not much too say, but it's such a gorgeous, calming show. It has all the best elements of a period drama and may be one of my favorites in the genre (yes, even counting Western live action Austen adaptations)

Honorable mentions: Ouran High School Host Club (one of the funniest series ever), Lovely Complex, Toradora (the series surprised me with it's maturity, while still being adorable. Loved it), Skip Beat! (shame that the manga completely lost its plot, it is simply going on for too long - but when it was good, it was an excellent, addictive shoujo)

1. Honey and Clover
2. Touch/Cross Game
3. The Garden of Words (movie)
4. BECK

About as much of the romance I've enjoyed from anime.

Ooohhh, I like this thread since I think I might be able to find some great stuff to watch I haven't heard of before. Anyway for myself...

Kimi Ni Todoke! Kimi Ni Todoke!!!! I'm glad to see some love for this show from other posters. I went on a little adventure like a year and half ago consuming all romance anime I could get my eyes on and in the end this was what impacted me the most. I loved the focus on a character who is socially awkward and a bit of an outcast but doesn't let that get her down as she enjoys life to the fullest in her own little way. It's both saddening and heartwarming at the same time and on a personal level just very relatable to my own high school experiences. Was just a really great uplifting story.

Anywho, some other stuff:
2. Blue Spring Ride - I liked the twist of this show where the main character is the popular girl every other girl hates and all the guys lust over. Mostly because she hates herself too and her entire outward appearance is a complete fabrication she uses to avoid that image.
3. Chihayafuru - Not exactly primarily focused on romance but that was actually the thing that I loved most in the series. Main male character is a bro I feel for, having feelings for someone socially dumb is a hard life to lead.
4. True Tears - Show is kind of up its own asshole at times but I think it had some of the most believable relationship development I've seen in media in general. Whole thing is kind of bleak to be honest but I couldn't ever stop watching.
5. Golden Time - Generic answer I know but taking a tried and true formula and setting it at a college instead of high school was refreshing and opened up some cool story avenues. I mostly put this here though because it's incredible how the show managed to take a character I absolutely loathed in the first half of the show (Koko) and have me rooting for her by the end. Also Tada Banri is just really fun to say out loud.

Off the top of my head:

1. Emma *
2. Whisper of the Heart (film)
3. Touch *
4. Kare Kano / His and Her Circumstances
5. Crest/Banner of the Stars **

* I can't actually vouch for the quality of these animes as I am basing these on their mangas without having seen the anime adaptions.

** I prefer the Crest/Banner of the Stars series to Touch and Kare Kano, but I feel that it just barely qualifies as romance anime. Therefor I put it behind them on this list.

Where are all the votes for Maison Ikkoku? MI should be #1 on all these lists.

I've always been disappointed MI never found a real fanbase in America. Godai is one of the great manga/anime protagonists, and probably the best character Takahashi has created.

The Maison Ikkoku manga sucked for 8-9 volumes. Only the last and possibly the penultimate volume didn't suck. Now the last volume is actually amazing, and makes the entire read worth it, but getting their was a major drag. Took me three tries before I actually managed to finish the series. Godai is no great protagonist, mostly a frustrating one in my opinion.

1.) Kimikiss pure rouge
2.) Ai yori Aoshi
3.) Amagami SS
4.) Kimi ni Todoke
5.) Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora

I would have put either one for the top spot but I've just recently rewatched no. 1 so it edges out the three. What I've liked for 1 is that it didn't push through the typical harem route which is typical in romantic animes, there are clear cut love interest, and it feels relealistic compared to other animes. It focuses on how the characters change over the course of the story, highlighting their realizations as to what they seek in a relationship. In that way it's like our quest for true love, We all chase it, but not all catch it.

No Video Girl AI?

i'm disappoint, GAF

I find the fact that nobody not once mentioned Ken Akamatsu at all the real travesty. Sadly Love Hina the anime doesn't come close to Love Hina the manga which is in my opinion one of the greatest romance manga of all time. Anime? I would actually say:

kei_and_mizuho_by_rocky_road123-d58maab.png

Kei and Mizuho from Please Teacher. As titillating and fanservice-y as the show was, I found it to be a pretty thoughtful anime that explored the idea of marriage between two people who are just learning about themselves for the first time and the idea of love and rejection. Too bad the sequel was fan service pandering trash.

Top 5:

1. Nodame Cantabile
2. Nana
3. Lovely Complex
4. Kare Kano
5. Honey and Clover

Bottom 5:

1. Oreimo
2. Sankarea
3. Red Data Girl
4. Clannad/AS
5. Bokura ga Ita

I tried to only include anime where romance is an truly integral part of the plot, rather than just a small part of it (such as Steins;Gate, Welcome to the NHK, etc.)

1. Cross Game (Ko X Aoba)
2. Toradora (Ryuji X Taiga)
3. Nodame Cantabile (Chiaki X Nodame)
4. Amagami SS (Junichi X Kaoru)
5. Lovely Complex (Otani X Risa)

Haven't watched anime in a long time, but the last one I remember being absolutely well executed was Spice and Wolf. (Fuck I love that anime)

1. Clannad/AS
2. Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen
3.
4.
5. Love Hina

I'm throwing a bone to Love Hina because it was my gateway drug to anime and have huge nostalgia for it even though retrospectively it's not the greatest.

I'll think of 3 and 4 later because right now nothing immediately jumps to mind even though I've seen quite a few.

1. Eureka Seven - Incredibly sincere to a fault, every emotion in this series feels authentic. Few other shows have as big a heart. There's not a second of this show that comes off as false or cynical.
2. Kare Kano - highly energetic, unique direction and again sincere emotions. At times funny, other times contemplative.
3. Honey and Clover - More down to earth and relatable in a real world fashion. Not everything always turns out perfect.
4. Crest/Banner of the Stars - Just terrific interactions between two people. Seeing these the two protagonists grow closer together is a huge joy.
5. Rahxephon - One of the more unique romantic situations. The mood in this show as well as the "love a cross time" theme make this stand out to me, especially with the ending.

1) Kemonozume

Just watch it.

Are the characters one-dimensional? Is the story targeted at young teens? Is the romance aspect of it immature and unrealistic? Any forced and contrived "I CRY EVERY TIME ;_;" scenes?

If not, that'll be a tough sell to the Clannad/Your Lie in April/Ano Hana crowd.

Someone seems salty.

1. Eureka Seven
2. Honey and Clover
3. Toradora
4. Kare Kano
5. My Love Story

Hori-san to Miyamura-kun would be there, but I don't think the OVAs count.
