Neogeo X....hot or not?

Just curious on impressions for these, and I'm getting mixed info online. Apparently the system was poorly regarded at launch, but there was apparently a FW update that improved video and audio quality? Is there a preferable way to play Neogeo games on the go?

And apparently SNK terminated their contract with the company that was making these, yet they still seem to be pretty available online...not exactly a great sign lol

Not.

I would probably recommend playing through homebrew measures on PSP or N3DS over this. Even though I can't speak for the improvements they made, it's a shoddy product that's pretty overpriced.

What's so bad about it? On paper this thing sounds incredible...legit official Neogeo releases on the go, plus HDMI output? How do you fuck this up!?

You're probably better off emulating them on a PSP or something.

The unit has poor battery, bad screen and feels a bit cheap. the big controller is cool though. Streaming it to your TV with HDMI looks awful.

Save your money.

It's a Neo Geo Pocket Color in a crappy case. It doesn't even play all the games IIRC.

I'll ask this question here because I might be talking BS.

Did I remember correctly that the first models made can't have firmware updated (so constantly suffer from screen tearing and other shit) requiring them to be sent to some place in the USA to fix it?

Isn't there an Android handheld console that's running retroarch or something? I remember seeing a thread about it a couple months ago. PSP and N3DS emulators are kinda wonky.

Frame-rate issues, screen tearing, scaling problems, bad video out, a 16:9 display for a 4:3 platform, and more. It's a bad way to play these games.

I owned one at launch, and having owned an MVS and AES - it wasn't very good.

- The screen quality is very average
- Speakers are worse
- The dpad, while clicky - is not nearly good as the neo geo pocket they were trying to replicate
- Had to return my first unit because the directions were sticking
- Battery life not so good

On paper I agree it sounds great, but after my 2nd unit I realized I was wasting my time (and money) and sold it on eBay.

Every video I have seen on this system has said that it is a complete failure and a waste of money, better off getting a Vita and buying Neo Geo games on PSN.

A guy that runs a local arcade thing has a MVS cabinet. Should I just yell at him to buy Windjammers? Cost to me = $0
You should definitely do it.
Windjammers is fantastic.
Other DataEast games for Neo Geo are also quite fun like Magical Drop 3, Street Hoop and Spin Master.

From what I heard it's really just emulation, and a poor one at that. And the output is crap with tearing and poor color.

It's crud. The games just run off of an SD card. It has a widescreen for no reason. You can't even dock it in the shell thing like a cartridge.

it had some interesting ideas, the final product is more of a nostalgia play then a real good system. If you can pick it up for under 50 bucks, may be worth a look. Not worth it for anything more then that!

I wonder how many games on it come from easily available compilations so you can buy those, get Roms off them, and then play on something without an awful emulator

Apparently, they used final burn alpha and Roms that they didn't even rip themselves, but were floating around on the Internet. That thing is basically a joke.

Invest in a consolized MVS or just play ports of games on other consoles/handhelds.

I'm just looking for a cost effective way to play Windjammers fam

Not emulated? ~$180 for a top loading Neo Geo CD and ~$100 for the game. Downside is mostly going to be load times, and I always worry about CD drives from that long ago. Also is going to limit the amount of Neo Geo games you can get by a good bit.

If you're good with soldering you can probably make your own (ugly) consolized MVS system for ~$150 and then you'll be out ~$200 (but maybe more? Prices are creeping up on this game) for the MVS cart and another $70-$100 for the arcade stick (maybe $60 if you go with a Neo Geo CD controller).

I definitely read this as NeoGAF X.

I half expected it to be people posting pictures of themselves in a hot-or-not type fashion.

It's fucking trash. As a massive SNK fangirl, I jumped on it. It's shitty emulation, the sound especially is awful.

Load times aren't a problem for Windjammers on NGCD (after the long ass bootup, the other loadings are quick).
NGCD is indeed a quite unreliable console though.

Emulation display+sound glitches. Also the portable plugs into a NeoGeo shell which just seems tacky to me. If it could run actual carts I would've been interested.
