Didn't watch End of Evangelion tho. It's like impossible to buy in America for whatever reason.
Even with your feelings stated above that...
BRO U MISSIN OUT

eh he can look at em later

Even though it was a goof to say 24 episodes and not 26, he honestly wouldn't be missing much if he skipped those 2. Those were the only episodes that I really didn't like in the whole series.

Thankfully when I watched it in 2005 or something, the movie was already out. I would have been super disappointed if that's how it ended.

Still my No. 1 after all these years! I still can't believe it's all these we're still on Anno's glorious batshit ride. (Is the new one 3.0+1.0 or is it now 4.0? 4.0 is going to be less confusing to advertise, Anno, please.)

Shinji's a motherfucking badass, only beaten out by the one-woman army that is Asuka.

Also, watch End of Evangelion! If you don't watch the last two episodes, you'll miss the good congratulations! spiel. Sitting through Ep 25/26 is a right of balls trippin' Evangelion passage, peeps.

Don't skip 25 and 26, seriously. Definitely watch EoE but don't skip 25 and 26.

Oh man. EoE is sublime.

I watched it at 20 and was fascinated by it, then I watched it at 28 and I was fascinated again. Both times I was far beyond adolescent naïveté and I loved it. But maybe that's just me :)

Evangelion is always good. You could watch it once every year and get something new and different from it. I have watched it countless times and go back to particular scenes with an almost daily frequency, and i always notice something different each time. Eva is quite literally one of the most wholesome works of art i've ever seen, something that required a deep commitment, passion, devotion and courage to achieve. It's one of the rarest things there are, how many artists are there that can so wholly put themselves into one work? Very very few, that's how many. Excellence in form and content. It just doesn't get better than that.

Hah, maybe I'll consider it then. I thought about doing a full rewatch when 3.0+1.0 finally arrives but so far the news had not been so optimistic. It's been nearly exactly 10 years since I first watched it (Sep '05) so that seems like a good reason to watch it. I'm honestly quite curious how I would respond to it now. Maybe I'll convince my fiancee to join me, that would be an interesting experiment... I think.

One of the best. Evangelion was one of my introductions to subbed anime. Eva, Cowboy Bebop, and Berserk were my shows. So I probably caught it around 98 or 99.

The movies have been interesting. Enjoyed the first two, fell asleep during the third. I'll attempt a rewatch when the fourth is actually on the horizon.

Evangelion is truly a phenomenal series and nothing really comes close in terms of the visual style, editing and cinematography. The final 30 minutes of The End of Evangelion in particular remains untouched even to this day. That last half an hour of that film is Anno at his finest from a visual standpoint, incorporating live action and a plethora of animation techniques including inverting the cels in order to give a sketchy and painterly look to the scenes, cutting scenes quick and overlapping them in a frantic manner in order to create a chaotic and manic tone. The ability to tell so much with so little from a visual stand point is astounding. The show takes its time and lets each and every scene breath.

Evangelion is also a series that was able to give a character around of 20 minutes of screen time and still craft one of the most beloved and remembered characters in all of Japanese animation, hitting each and every viewer square in the gut with the phenomenal climax, utilizing just still images and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was enough to create a powerful and compelling scene.

It's neither a perfect series nor a perfect film, however from the designs of the Eva Units, Tokyo-3, the characters themselves or just the general direction from the audio cues and music, Evangelion stands head and shoulders above the rest. Never has a series ever encapsulated its director and brandished his or her talents as amazingly as Evangelion. From the shots of telephone poles and wires brandishing the city skylines to the trains traveling through the city, from the Matisse EB font that brandishes almost all of the merchandise to the eyecatches that signal each and every commercial break, the quick and razor sharp editing style catches your attention and remains unmatched in the medium.

my client shinji ikari only engaged in sexual assault because he was feeling really bummed that day, your honor

In determining the goodness of an individual you perform a summation of all his actions, and Shinji nets a positive score. It's not correct to assume that bad actions can be made to be characteristic of any one individual because that assumes that any one person can be wholly incapable of doing bad things, which is simply untrue. Plus, i don't think what one person does inches away from desiring his or her own death can be truthfully descriptive of his or her character.

Fantastic show. One of the first things I watched when looking into anime for the first time. Great story and characters. I wouldn't say its my favorite anime ever but it is certainly impactful.

Can someone please succinctly summarize what Evangelion was about in one paragraph? I don't think it even knows what it tried to be with Episodes 25 and 26 and then EoE.

wow

Speaking of 3.33, when the freakin' f are they going to release it in the US?? It's been like 4 years since they released 2.22 in the US, they are gonna have to spend a ton on marketing to make up for the long delay whenever it does come out if they intend to make any money off of it.

Recent news pointed to 2016 iirc.

The natural isolation we all experience as human beings and our struggle to overcome it, using a deconstruction of a super robot show as a frame narrative.

It's been a long time since I've seen the end, but as I remember:

Babies had stopped being born with souls - there weren't any left in the philosophical room of souls. The secret plan to deal with this problem (cooked up by Shinji's father) intended to trigger Third Impact, which would destroy all of humanity causing a merging of all souls into one single being, in essence turning humanity into God to make sure humanity survived in some form, and the Angels were sent against them to stop this plan. This plan ended up being successful with the merging of Rei with Adam and Lilith, but in the end Shinji realized that life was worth living, for both the good and bad moments, and his actions restored humanity and refilled the room of souls.

I could of course be way wrong...

I read the manga a couple of times, but I never bothered to actually watch the show, fully aware that it is the original.

The time has come.

Everyone calling EVA trash is just stupid for wanting attention that way. One of the most important animes ever.

Sell me on this. I'm not a big anime fan but I do enjoy contained storylines that have a bit of "epicness" and ambiguity.

I've heard a lot of good but I can't stand most anime tropes. Is the story bigger than just another anime?

I like ghibli type anime. but I know this is nothing like this.

How are you defending the anime without having seen it? It deserves a ton of criticism, especially with how it ended (which came down to budgetary reasons).

Evangelion is ultimately about choice, the realization that everyone has a choice and each one within reason is valid, however each choice comes with its own set of repercussions. Shinji chooses to stay away from people, distancing himself from others because he doesn't want to get hurt, but distancing himself from others comes with its own host of problems and ultimately trying to run away is impossible because no matter what you do, consequences always exist. In the end, it’s better to be around others and maybe get hurt because in doing so he gets to know himself more as he fleshes himself out as well as getting to know others outweighs the loneliness and pain that he causes himself and others.

It's been a while since I last watched the series from beginning to end but the last two episodes are ultimately examinations of the main character from an internal point of view. All the world building, the conspiracies, religious symbolism and the Eva units are ultimately symbols for the characters themselves and the very basic and personal struggles that they face. From complimenting others to loving themselves to breaking down how they view others. Rei, Asuka, Misato and even Ritsuko all represent the different views Shinji has on females, from the lover to the friend to the motherly figure, and it’s about him coming to grips with how he interacts and views people. The EoE is ultimately Shinji's rejection of a world where we all exist as one, indistinguishable to one another. In the end we need others to form a self-identity. Shinji feels alone, but he isn't alone in feel lonely.

What about
the multiple adams thing
? can you also elaborate a bit on that? I think it was something mentioned in the rebuild series but I forgot the significance of it.

I think this is on the right track, but how does the LCL (Tang), Third Impact (and all of the Impacts, really) and Human Instrumentality Project play into this core theme of overcoming one's flaws and problems?

I just felt that it was heading in that direction until the final two episodes and EoE, though I suppose the ending of EoE made sense when Komm, süßer Tod played with that montage.

To be fair when Eva created a lot of those bad anime stereotype, so they are new ideas back in the day.

Wait, wasn't Evangelion about deconstructing the anime stereotypes of the time? Or did they end up creating new stereotypes after deconstructing the old ones?

Okay, confession time.

I have never seen NGE.

In any shape or form.

Can someone give me an order to watch the series in?
Including the rebuild OAVs, EoE, etc.

End of Evangelion had some cool scenes, and I really like the art and designs for the franchise, but I don't really care for it beyond that.

LCL is largely a reference to embryonic fluid, which is fitting since it's
Lilith's blood
The 3rd impact and human instrumentality project tie into the idea of humans needing to be individuals.

Yes it was largely a deconstruction. While deconstructing those tropes it created a slew of new ones, to anno's chagrin.

Original series + EoE. Rebuild movies afterward.
