Nerds and Fedoras

Alright, because I'm morbidly curious:

This is me in a hat, sans glasses.

Members of the press wear fedoras.

This is what the hat looks like on men:

This is what the hat looks like on people who think masculinity can be found in a hat:

After seeing some of the pictures being posted in the thread, I noticed the following. The guys who pulled the fedora look like they actually care about their appearance, more than just buying a hat. They don't have unkept hair, and facial hair. They all are wearing clothes that we all associate with a formal setting i.e. well fitting suit, nice shirt and tie, etc. The other people, who can't pull the fedora; for example, the bottom picture in your post don't exude those qualities. They look like they don't really give a damn about appearance, hence the fact that some of these people are overweight, and wearing things that you wouldn't be caught wearing in any reputable office in the entire world.

So in conclusion, a man appears confident when he cares about his appearance, and that involves all aspects of his life - from the way he dresses, the way he communicates, to the way you eat. Once you start practicing those things, then you can pull off any style and look good.

So, what exactly is the x-factor here? Fedoras, but only if they accompany a 3-piece suit? Would I get by with a button-down and a tie?

Basically. Fedoras never worked in a vacuum. But a three-piece suit in an everyday setting is no longer the norm, so trying to go for that just says "trying too hard"

I've never once thought of fedoras as being feminine.

Also: who gives a fuck. People can wear whatever they want. Don't shame them.

This is a Pork-Pie.

Not all brimmed dress hats are Fedoras, as the poster who showed the difference between a Fedora and a Trilby with the more you know image.

Find a habadashery (if your city has one) to have someone help you buy a hat for your face. Your face and head shape determines what hat style you can pull off. Plus appropriate clothes to help your head covering accessorise appropriately.

so basically, you can't pull off a fedora unless you're already handsome and in good shape...in which case you could pull off almost any style you wanted.

do i have that right?

Fedoras can look good but you need the right outfit, and the problem is they have too much of an antiquated connotation for most people to pull off without automatically looking like they're "trying too hard". Just avoid.

This is always a given.

Wikipedia

A pork pie hat (a.k.a. porkpie) is a type of hat made of felt or straw. It is a type of fedora which has a cylindrical crown and flat top.

A critical note on Fedoras.

They are a suit accessory. Specifically they were an outdoors suit accessory that was removed with your overcoat when you went inside. Even in the fedora age they were not worn casually, and they certainly don't go with a graphic tee and some jizz-stained cargos.

I wouldn't strongly recommend wearing one today even with a suit, but you really just cannot wear them with anything else.

It's just simply a way for compensating for their looks

This usually applies to most people overdressing with fashion

You don't see models or those with natural good looks with anything more then a simple clean attire most of the time

The Fedora
Fedoras were once considered de rigueur for men going out in public and a necessary accessory to formal and business attire. While once mainstream, a man in a fedora is now seen as a trendsetter. Fedoras are soft, usually made of felt, creased lengthwise down the crown, and pinched on both sides. Obviously you cannot pair a fedora with jeans and a polo. They are only an appropriate accent for dressier outfits. But the pay off-loads of style, class, and confidence-make dressing up worth it. Fedoras will make you look manly and a bit mysterious. Worn by Prohibition era gangsters, almost all of the movie stars of the 1940′s, and Old Blue Eyes himself, donning a fedora puts you in touch with a truly luminous and manly heritage.

Named for its resemblance to an actual pork pie, this hat is similar to a fedora but with a flat top instead of a pinched crown. The brim is also shorter and turned up. The hat is often associated with the jazz, blues, and ska culture, but was also worn by the likes of Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atom bomb.

More to the point on buying a hat for your shape:
