Nerds and Fedoras

Unless you (1) are a bad ass rude boy and/or (2) know how to properly pair a hat with a suit and (3) actually don't look like a tool wearing a gentleman's hat, don't fucking wear one. Especially with a T-shirt and jeans. That shit is worse than socks and sandals.

Seriously wants to make me rage any time I see a smug motherfucker wearing a $20 pinstriped fedora wearing a T-shirt and/or jeans. Even worse is the dude who has all of that and wears a neck tie over his T-shirt.

You judgmental jerks are making me stress out about what the hell I'm supposed to do when my hair finally finishes falling out. Baseball caps and naked-head are my only options? :(

My hair started falling out while I was in college. I finally sucked it up and started shaving my head when I hit 30. I should have started much sooner. JOIN US!

Baseball hat and some sneakers and a sports shirt of some sort. Never know when a game might break out!

Why are baseball caps acceptable?

Huh, so wearing a fedora is a nerd thing in the US? Fedoras and flatcaps are really popular here in Korea.

But yeah if you're going to wear a fucking t-shirt and jeans with a fedora it's probably a good idea not to use one.

If you can't pull off wearing a suit in everyday situations, you definitely can't pull off a fedora.

Few who can wear a suit normally can even do that. God forbid someone in a suit that has not been touched by a tailor.

I actually kind of want to just get it over with but it seems like a lot of work to maintain that smooth dome.

Can't believe no one posted this guy yet.

Fedora doesn't match the suit.

I can't speak for everyone but personally it is much easier to shave the top of my head than it is to shave my beard. Use a disposable razor in the shower and it goes very quickly.

I said before, when I shaved my head, suddenly all manner of hats started to look good on me. And it was doubly good because you really should cover your head from the sun.

I have a straw fedora I really like, but it definitely requires the right type of outfit. If I wear it, I should always be holding an iced drink in my hand.

this happens?

I've seen it a couple times with skinny ties. Speaking of which, people who wear skinny ties look ridiculous. But then again I've only seen it with people in this thread that would wear a fedora. The whole lazy sort of formal but not at all. Not sure why they're so popular now but they look awful.

News Flash: if you're a fat ugly nerd, nothing will look good on your head. Wearing a fedora isn't the thing sealing the deal there.

Fedora's come to Animal Crossing. :(

Just look at that pompous ass >:(

I'll say this as a dude who wears a baseball cap even though he has a full head of hair, for everyone here who is chiding people who wear silly hats, those selfsame people are pretty confident that they could pull the look off if they reeeeally tried.

I think fedoras and bowlers have a POTENTIAL to look awesome on someone's head, but almost everyone that put one on looks good in nothing.

if you put proper lighting on any picture, it's gonna look cool. Also old people in general are just cooler and get away with more shit some 19 year old dipshit isn't gonna pull off.

Also, wearing clothes appropriate for a fedora go a long way. Wearing sandals and cargo shorts with a fedora looks stupid on almost everyone.

As don draper and bogart has proven. Fedoras look great.

You just have to look manly and have a matching attire.

If you are chubby with boyish features or worse chubby with boyish features and a nerdy aura with plain clothes like cargo-pants and tshirts with prints on, you will look like a douche.

Let's face it, if you're already an attractive looking person to begin with, you can pretty much wear anything and look good..

I think this is ultimately the truth. Nobody cares what you wear. It's whether or not you look good. And being attractive makes you look good.

Mock whomever you want, but this shit is decided by genetics and time spent in a gym.

That article was a lot more interesting than I expected. I weirdly got the impression that it sometimes painted the detractors as hostile, although also trying to depict them on the better side of culture and progressiveness.

I don't necessarily know if the fedora represents masculinity to the "subculture" in question (and the article and discussion is predicated on a loose but fairly identifiable stereotype, so let's just roll with it) but if that's really the root cause then just cut the masculinity bullshit. I understand that something about the fedora communicates a certain boldness. What I don't understand is why some people crave to be masculine. Who the fuck cares?

edit: for the record - most every time I seem them worn when I'm out and about, I don't like them.

trying to sound knowledgeable on hats and calling them all fedora isn't really speaking for the OP case. hats are like glasses in a sense, you have to find one that suits you head and your face. if you're big and rotund a tiny hat will make you look goofy, same if you're skinny and wearing a big hat. all the celebrities pictured here have a slew of people that will take care of their looks while most people will pick "indy's hat" or "bogey's hat" instead of picking one that fits.

Oh just stop. You're doing that whole "common sense" thing again.

I can't take you anywhere.

Fedora only suits men with manly jaws (rugged stubble optional) because of the shape. The jaw/chin balances the hat edges or something. Oh, and please look at least 35 years old while wearing it...

I think they have the right idea, it's just rare for someone to pull it off, not least the type that likes fedoras and the like. I wish classy suits and hats would come back in style though, such a cool look.

I'd love to be able to pull the look off, but I'm smart enough to know I can't.

I typically wear a dress shirt (no tie) with jeans. I have a couple of ballcaps and one fedora. They're outerwear. I'm usually wearing an ordinary jacket if I'm wearing a hat.

I've been told that the ballcaps make me look younger than my age (by 5-10 years), while the fedora makes me look older than my age (by 5-10 years). Some people have said I look like an entirely different person depending on the hat.

A fedora is a really nice hat. Yeah, there's some douchebags wearing them, but I'm not going to live my life avoiding nice things just because they're popular with douchebags.

Some of yall are some assholes. :/

First off, to the "nerds" wearing fedoras ... if your fedora came from some chain fitted hat store/ target and cost 8-12 bucks then that thing likely aint looking good on ANYONE. That's the case with a TON of this "nerd pics" I see. If your fedora isn't worth (Not saying you have to spend this much, just that it should normally be priced with in this range) $40-50 then it's likely not gonna look good on you regardless of what you wear. Take your ass to a hat shop or someplace that specializes in non-sports hats and if you have to then bring a friend with style or ask the people who work there for help in finding the right hat or fedora for YOU and what YOU intend on wearing it with.

To the fashion police in this thread, I'm sure I don't have to remind you but not all fedoras are made to be worn the same. Just as there are some that may be mean't to be worn on more formal terms (that can still be pulled off with casual wear given the person and choice in clothing) there are fedoras made for more casual wear. Like the strew hat fedora, it's great for summertime casual wear that doesn't require you dress up like some old timely gangster or like you're going to church or something. (My strew hat fedora is the last fedora I have gotten and the only one I brang back to San Fran with me because I enjoy wearing fedoras and wanted one I could match with shorts and such. My other 2 demand a bit more style and class)

So to make blanket statements such as "fedoras are mean't to be worn in this occasion and not in casual wear or blah blah blahhhhh!" is pretty damn wrong.

It's all about the hat selection, the quality of the hat, what you wear with it and how you carry yourself in it. Someone pointed it out earlier but yes, having good posture and looking like you give a damn about how you present yourself (hygiene, making sure you're washing your face to clear up any acne and so on) can go a LONG way.
