Nerds and Fedoras

I don't understand the hate for this, really. Fedoras can be really classy when properly matched by a suit.

Yeah, male models who can wear anything including fedoras and everyone thinks they are so cool and different.

Isn't that the reason why freaking everyone chooses his / her clothes?

Most of the hate seems to stem from people who wear fedoras not really giving a shit about dressing appropriately (read:dressing in a way that doesn't make you look like an ass) for them.

What I can't understand is level of the vitriol it inspires. I mean, okay, the hats look bad on most people. From some of the reactions I read, people who fedoras ran over their fucking dogs or something.

There was an episode of the Mad Mens where I thought Jon Hamm looked bad in a fedora. Even with make up, HD cams, expert lighting, a massive budget for costumes, a fedora still looked bad.

But if you are wearing a fedora, which is a completely non - essential clothing item, id does shows that you care tiny little bit about image, right? I think that there's a lot of the whole "if you are into fashion be hardcore about it rather than casual" behind this tread. But I must recognice that proper attire is not something that you can do in a half assed manner and still get good results.

Fashion police GAF + hate nerd brigade is an outstanding combo, I guess.

His handsome rugged face is the only good thing in that image. Any average joe would look like a hobo in that outfit.

Why ruin a perfectly good suit by adding a fedora?

Not really if it looks like shit and is accompanied by dad jeans, new balance sneakers, a gaming t shirt, long unkempt hair, heckbeard, etc. etc. etc.

...no?

Have you ever had a professional job? Business clothes are designed to fit in and streamline you. Sure, you can be "unique" and "original" with your tie, but in the end, you'll just look like you're trying too hard and no one will give a damn.

Trying super hard to make your clothes stand out is something you do when you want attention. That's generally considered a childish trait.

There are obvious exceptions: If you're a artist or performer (which I have great respect for) and strive to create an image, then yes. If you're at the club trying to stand out to the ladies, then yes.

But in everyday professional life? No.

If you're handsome as hell and have a great overall fashion sense you might be able to pull it off.

Otherwise, don't bother.

Angel is on the case!

OMG, that's messed up but he does look like Angel! This topic is killing me, especially the pics of the Instagram filters over "camera-GAFfer's" pictures. Also choked on my cig smoke at the modification of that chick wearing the fedora (someone made it green and gave it a pimp-hat feather XD).

I have a small collection of hats, but I'd never dream of wearing most of them outside the house.

I would love nothing more than to show off my fez, my East German police officer's cap and my replica confederate hat in public, but I realise that I'd just look like a prick.

No, you'd come off as awesome.. Guarantee the ladies swoon for the fez.

I never thought of the fedora as a thing for super-nerds and forever-alone whiners.

I just thought of them as a dumb affectation for boring idiots that want to look interesting. "This will make me seem cool and unique!"

There is some truth in that statement, actually. But I've also gotten numerous compliments on the fedora, and a surprising number of those were attractive women. Of course, I was married at the time...though that won't be the case for much longer. Bleh.

Your perception my be biased. In my experience a fedora has the power to cloud the wearer's perception of snide or sarcastic compliments, making them believe such statements to be sincere.

Perhaps if I wasn't already a master of sarcasm, this could be true. However, sarcastic comments don't get by me! Where can one get this magical fedora that clouds one's judgement?!

You're a true chap if you can rock a Derby. Neither hat should be worn without a suit.

EDIT: Also some of these hats aren't traditionals fedoras either. Some are pork pies and trilbies (like Bing Crosby used to wear)

-10 sarcasm detector could be interesting. My others range from +10 penis length, +5 Gangnam Style dancing, +100 creeper mode, +20 douchebaggedness, etc.

A lot of the guys who look bad in fedoras look bad because they have a look of: "I'm cool because I'm wearing a fedora", instead of just looking cool and wearing a fedora.

Pork pie hats are worse than fedoras. I can think of only one person who could rock a pork pie hat and that's the one you see in my avatar.

Guys it's s all about whether you have a strong jaw and chin. You need the balance of the wide fedora with a wide jaw. Otherwise it takes over your face and it looks like you have an upside down triangle face.

No slobby neckbeards either, but that should be a given in any situation.
