Netflix begins streaming The X-Files in HD

This pretty much reminds me of the goof with Buffy the Vampiter Slayer when they converted it to widescreen.

Spent like 10 seconds waiting for the WebM to start playing.

Was into season 5 of a complete run through of these on Netflix, had a quick view and from what I saw in the 5 minutes it seems to be a decent job. Will need to spend some more time with the new versions before I decide how happy I am about them though.

The first thing I noticed was the audio which appears top have a much wider and cleaner spread now. Again, will need to spend time with it before I decide whether I like it or not.

This is clearly likely leading up to blu-ray releases down the line which I'm definitely not going to buy. Definitely not, no chance at all...maybe.

Really impressed with this so far.

It's taken a bit of getting used to since I was already in the process of working my way through the entire series but I've watched the first three episodes now and although it's really strange seeing them look like this at first I do like them.

The X-Files has always been a little stylistically eccentric at times so I'm not sure yet how episodes like The Post-Modern Prometheus will hold up in this "new and improved" form.

Not really seeing anything to complain about so far although I have spotted a touch of macro-blocking in the darker scenes. That's not unusual for Netflix though and I've not seen anything that suggests it's anything to do with the source, it should disappear completely when it reaches blu-ray.

I'm guessing that the first season will hit blu-ray around the time that the new episodes arrive on TV to maximise publicity and they seem to be ready to go.

My friend and I are watching Ice right now (clearly the right choice after reading this thread lol), and hOLY. SHIT. It looks AMAZING! I can't believe how beautiful everything is... well, y'know, excluding the gross skin effects.

Scully is SO FRECKLY!! EHEHE! <3

Netflix better get the rest of the seasons done up all pretty like this, because it's totally worth it. I can't wait to get the whole series in glorious HD when they finally release it.

Watched both the Pilot and Ice, everything looks so good in glorious HD.

Decided to test out Darkness Falls, which is episode 20 of S1, and sure enough, it's in HD as well. So hopefully that means all of S1 at least is in HD.

How scary is the show ?

At night with all lights off some episodes can be really intense if not frightening; but the show is fairly dark often, so it's easier for the show to sort of "come alive" when your in the dark: meaning it becomes more immersive: more scary and intense when an episode calls for that sort of storytelling.

Enjoy...

Actually, the HD episodes stop on episode 23, which is "Roland" as episode 24, "The Erlenmeyer Flask" is still in SD.

So it seems that they're at least adding it little by little.

HD versions were showing in the U.S. for a time on 'El Rey' network, up to around season 5, and excluding the Pilot I think.

Fox or whoever has been sitting on a bluray set anticipating the next new X-files project so they could time it with that (which turned out to be a new tv run).

Should be noted that from what I've heard they kinda cheaped out when compared to Star Trek. The special effects and stock footage are basically untouched.

I can't be the only one quite annoyed by the fact that they've changed the fonts in the title sequence, in the logo and on all the legends on every establishing shots.

Had always hoped, after seeing so many of the HD rips from Germany, that these would be temporary and get fixed when eventually live for real or on BD.

About damn time! I've seen screens from the german remasters and boy do they look awesome. All we are missing now is a wide-screen blu-ray release

I just watched The X-Files for the first time in 13 years, and it still fits me like a glove. Now that I'm not a kid, though, I can actually keep up with every line, too. Feels good.

I don't remember much, except deciding that I wasn't going to keep watching until there was more. If ever there would be more. I didn't see the second movie (too busy traveling the world for three years >_>) but a part of me has been in stasis waiting on a revival for half my life. Now it is coming and I am rewatching.

Based Netflix.

Why only US? Twin Peaks is around the world on netflix for example.

Every single TV show has to be licensed on a country by country basis, primarily because most corporations are run the same way as the USSR (badly, after all the governing structure is quite similar) and also because there's decades of old contracts with no mention of internet streaming to deal with.

If you're talking about why not HD everywhere? That's just marketing, see the various hype for blu-ray comments above.

Aside:
Damn, 48 minutes for the pilot. Remember when TV shows had breathing room? (or Fringe, but that was the meh first season)

Is there no way to know if you are watching shows in HD? someo f the shows are suppose to be HD but it looks like shit. I watch on my 1080p monitor by the way.

They took from the source so the HD should look noticeably better. There is some SD stock footage used in the show however.

Seasons 5 onwards were widescreen originally. The rest until season 5 were shot widescreen safe to a point.

Everything was still framed for 4:3 so some of the expanded shots have characters misaligned or have a lot of dead space. They also still have some cropping on the top and bottom. My guess is they did not have enough safe horizontal real estate in those shots. Which would explain some of the imbalanced frame expansions like the one with Scully in the office above.

It is still better than TNG but at the same time you are getting some cropping and a lot of dead space in the wider frames.

When I watching at first, everything looked to be in SD (fuzzy everything and black bars on the side for 4:3 display) so I quit a few times but then decided to just let the episode buffer and load... Suddenly everything cleared up and the display filled my tv screen in full 1080p.

So I suggest letting the episode play for like a minute. The most obvious sign would be that there are black bars on the sides so if none are present, then it's in HD as otherwise it's in SD.

Also, it's only season 1 so far that's in HD while 2-5 (I think) are in SD. The later seasons I believe are already in HD, but I'm not completely sure.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel as well. The resolution boost is the real star here, but I'd rather keep the 4:3 aspect ratio at the HD resolution myself. The shots were clearly filmed with 4:3 in mind, and the widescreen shots often just look goofy because of all the dead space. The directors made sure that anything important happening in the shot was included within the 4:3 window, and the close-ups/angles were all set up for the 4:3 window.

But yeah, the bump in resolution is definitely appreciated.

I'm about 7 episodes in and one thing that is really starting to bother me is Scully's constant disbelief at all the weird stuff going on around her. Hey Mulder, how bout you let Scully go in the building first for once. I mean, it's getting kinda comical. It's just frustrating.

Wait until you've seen, like, 7 seasons of that.

You're probably better off not thinking too hard about continuity (... which is obviously easier for stand-alone episodes).

Strangely, a couple of episodes of S3 I was watching Friday night were in HD. I guess they're adding all of them in HD eventually, but just haven't rolled them out yet.

This show was always on when I was growing up, but I never really got fully into it. I missed so many episodes that it was all quite confounding, especially given my age at the time. It's one of the only big sci-fi shows I've yet to give a real chance, and yet I'm somehow just as excited as anyone else that it's coming back.

I guess this is a good time to start. Are there are any truly banal early episodes I should consider skipping? My beloved Star Trek franchise has some, that's for sure.

Different people like and dislike different episodes. The only way to give the show a real chance is to go all in.

The one very important piece of advice I will give you is to stay clear from the Netflix version after you get past those HD episodes*. The brightness level on Netflix's SD episodes is ridiculously low and you miss out on a ton of detail, not to mention it looks more heavily compressed. The DVD version is where it's at.

*I can't vouch for the HD episodes as I did not get a chance to see them yet... but I am skeptical that a clearer picture and redone special effects is right for this show.

Like a blu-ray release? That seems more and more unlikely for any tv show these days.

I get what you're saying, but in this particular case I don't think this is even a question. The new X-Files episodes will get a blu-ray release.
