Netflix: When did it begin to suck so bad.

I agree it's not that great, but they do have Star Trek: Into Darkness and Skyfall.

The TV selection is good with Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. I wish they carried CBS stuff. It's also a good place to catch documentaries.

I know. Can we get some 80's/90's cartoons? Most of them are not on TV anymore, so they can't be that expensive. Plus some older sitcoms like Roseanna, Cosby Show, Full House, Family Matters would be nice. I hate all this new current stuff.

I'm not sure Netflix would be worth it for me if we didn't also have Unblock.us (the Canadian service has like half the amount of content that the American service has), but with that service there is a good deal of selection. You still have to wait a 2-6 months after a film's DVD release to get it on Netflix, but I have been able to find most year old films on one territory or another. Catching Fire is in Canada and Brazil. Frozen is in the Netherlands.

This sort of site helps:

Here's a idea of what other non US netflix have. This is Norway.

Crap, don't tell me it's that easy or I'll be tempted to sign up o_O
Sounds great for $2/month. Will it also permit me to get American prices from the PSN store??

You can just make a PSN account for whatever region you want to buy from, you know. But if you're asking if it'll let you access your home country's store but get American prices, then no, that's impossible. Prices aren't determined by the region you access your home country's store from, but the region of the store that you access. And even then you'll have to buy PSN codes from the country whose store you want to buy from.

Its movie selection could use some work, but Netflix shines in its TV show selection. I would steer in that direction instead.

LOST, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Dexter, Frasier, The West Wing, American Horror Story, Sons of Anarchy, Cheers, Once Upon a Time, all the Star Treks,Quantum Leap, Justice League, The list goes on.

Edit: House,Sherlock, Doctor Who, and The Killing too!

Damn! I'm jealous of the US selection, as none of those are available in EU, and changing the DNS on the PS3 seems too much of a hassle.

I've been a subscriber for 7+ years, and it seems perfectly adequate to me. Netflix Instant has never been totally optimal, but since I'm only paying 7.99 a month I'm not bothered by the selection. It does its job (and then some).

Movies

UK doesn't have Star Trek, The Matrix films, Pacific Rim, Terminator films, Batman, V For Vendetta or Man of Steel

As for Star Trek TV it has seasons 4-7 of TNG and that's it.

It does miss a few things in the US because of Amazon Prime's attempts to make certain shows exclusive to it.

However, for what it has, it's okay.

e: I just installed Hola (on Firefox) and am now watching some US TV shows from Canada.

I seem to be doing something wrong. I select a different country in Hola but it just takes me to the login screen and when I log in I get:

Watching Instantly Is Not Currently Available For Your Account

Unfortunately your account is restricted to streaming only within the 50 United States and its territories.
You may still access your account, but you will not be able to play any title.

Still don't know how people complain about this (unless you're in some territory not called the USA) but I've got at least over a hundred movies and shows I haven't watched that I'm still going through and seemingly add more every time I go onto netflix.

Either expand your horizons and tastes or cancel.

TV shows are good but the majority of movies are terrible. That is why I still pay for Showtime,Starz, Cinemax and The Movie Channel on Verizon. The on demand for the premium channels is pretty good.

I still keep Netflix for the TV shows. If the quality/quantity of those drops though I will definitely cancel.

Considering how cheap it is (2 bargain DVDs) I find the offer really good. I don't really watch that many movies myself but my parents have been watching 1 to 2 movies a day since I got them a subscription a couple of months ago. It's totally worth it and they're saving heaps of money compared to what they did before (ie. buying 5-10 bargain DVDs a week)

From conversations I've had with people I find that whether or not you're satisfied with Netflix depends on your relationship with movies.

If you're a big fan of the medium and are willing to watch films you've never heard of and want to discover new, great movies, then you'll probably love Netflix. It has a ton of movies, from big budget to small, and it's easy to find something to watch whether you go in with a big list and go down it until you find one on there, or browse away until you find something interesting.

But if you're the kind of person who picks a movie in his head and has to watch that one single movie, then you'll probably hate it. I know a lot of people like this. They say "I want to watch Transformers" or "I want to watch Thor 2," go to Netflix and when they don't find it decide the Netflix selection is terrible. For them, they want to have a movie in mind, search for it, and immediately watch it and if this fails for them a few times then the service isn't worth it. It's understandable. Not everyone wants to watch indie, lesser known, or older films.

For me, I belong in the former group. In the last week I've watched World's Greatest Dad, God Bless America, John Mulaney: New in Town, The Usual Suspects, Apocalypse Now, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and It's A Disaster. I enjoyed all of them but God Bless America. And in each and every case the experience started with me going to Netflix, browsing my queue and trying to decide which of the movies on Netflix I wanted to watch.

There's a great selection there, you just have to be the type that's open to a lot of movies big and small, new and old. If you have a more narrow/recent view of what you want to watch at any given time, it's not not as great.

Awesome post. You hit the nail right on the head. This is exactly how I feel. Edit: I mean I love discovering lesser-known newer movies and older classics.

John Mulaney: New in Town
How is this? His new show on FOX looks absolutely terrible. Is he actually funny?

Can't wait for Daredevil.

Same.

That alone justifies my Netflix sub for 2015, same way Arrested Development justified it for 2013. This year isn't quite as good, but I figure watching 3x films a month on Netflix saves me money versus renting 3x films.

Plus Netflix UK has awful horror films. And Event Horizon. So it's worth ÂŁ5.99 a month. Kinda.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU to those who recommended unblock-us. I cannot believe I had never heard of this! I freaking lost my shit when I saw Fresh Prince was available in Brazil, lolol. Nostalgia overload. And Scandinavia has some serious heavy hitters as well, damn. This is why I love GAF, man. Never know what you'll come across.

It's freaking amazing, thanks to it I'm able to access Netflix from all regions being I'm a country who don't have it already. Among other region blocked content around the globe.

I still prefer it over paying for cable.

This. I'm really happy with their selection of TV shows and movies/documentaries, I have a lot in My List that I can never get to.

That, and Amazon Prime with the HBO Collection, which I'm yet to jump into as well, there's plenty to watch without cable.

It works very easily. Only problem with Adfreetime is that it logs you out after two weeks on inactivity so you need to login again. Then you click on Self Service, you see all the countries, confirm your selection and when restarting whatever device you use it for will use the other region. Unblock-us remembers your login info the entire time, has the country switcher on the homepage and might not require a confirmation (not sure) so it is a tiny bit easier.

About PSN, you are already able to do so I think. The problem is that the stores are tied to the accounts. For US prices you need an US account, you can still play them with other accounts on the same console though.

I think I've only heard of people using Hola to access the US from a different country. Might be that you'll have to pay for different functionality, I am not sure.

It really feels like their selection of movies is 1/10th of what it used to be. They lost so much stuff and never bothered to renew them. It's really awful right now.

They lost tons and tons of classics and now it's all bargain bin stuff

inevitable with the rise of streaming making the best content cost more. Studios aren't going to give their stuff away anymore.

We dont have Netflix here in north Cyprus/Turkey and we probably never will. I am sooo loking forward too Marco Polo and Iron Fist though

Thanks dudes. I won't do the PSN thing but sounds like Unblockus is better.

Go invest in Netflix right now guys. Remember the thread a few years back...a vast majority were saying Netflix is doomed. Then their stock jumps 300 points, or something like that, the following year.

I think it's good in the TV part especially shows you've watched that become background noise. Also it has ESPN's 30 for 30 documentaries which are mostly awesome. Also it helped me get into Arrow just as season two was starting.

I actually think as films go it shines in the children's department. Old Disney films plus some of the Renaissance stuff minus the ones in higher demand like The Little Mermaid, TLK, or Aladdin. Still nowhere near what non-US Netflix is offering, clearly.

I think Amazon is a bit more dire, but they also put all the Z-grade shit in the forefront. I was astonished to find stuff like I Love Lucy, Daria, and 90s Nicktoons on Prime for viewing because it was so hidden away and Amazon is terrible in categorization.

The movie selection isn't the best but the TV shows on offer more than make up the paltry amount I'm paying per month, honestly. There are several heavy hitter TV shows that you could easily watch over the course of one month that would cost nearly a hundred bucks on blu ray/DVD.

I find it hard to believe folks that cant find a single thing to watch on Netflix. If all youre looking for are blockbuster movies, then yes, Netflix is not the ideal place. But their competitors are hampered in the same way.

There are so many good indie and international films on there. The alternative is paying $60-100 for cable where you're only watching a couple channels. I'll take 8.99 Netflix any time.

I love that special. I've watched it a few times. John Mulaney is easily one of my favorite comedians right now. He's a funny man with clever material and great delivery.

I've seen the trailer for his new sitcom and I agree it doesn't look great. I heard nothing but great things about the pilot, so I sort of expected quite a bit more from that trailer. It had funny parts, but was mostly a bit too... hammy? Over the top? Forced?

I'm reserving judgement because of my love for his standup and the good word of mouth the pilot had, but I wasn't enthused by the trailer. Good news is that it means it's not too indicative of the quality of his standup special. I'd highly recommend checking out New in Town.
