Netflix: When did it begin to suck so bad.

I heard scandinavian countries have Friends on their Netflix?

Anyone know? Hook a brother up!

Also, coupled with unblock.us or Hola! (which I use), Netflix is worth every penny. Currently watching all of the X-files on US netflix. It's great.

I wish there was an incredible website covering all of Netflix catalogue across regions, with proper organisation, genres, ratings, even some mild curation and suggestions etc.

I've always had Unblock-us (since my country doesn't even have its own version of Netflix) and I feel like I don't give it the proper use.

Being a Prime member, I wouldn't be able to justify Netflix. The movies on both are severely lacking, but just having the HBO archive ends the conversation for me.

I like it, it has some nice shows and a few decent movies.

My only problem with it is that the way they organize movie is terrible.
They have some weird categories and they tend to repeat the same shows and movies.

The other day I saw Old Boy and decided to check if they had other Korean Movies and it turns out they have quite a decent selection but you basically have to search them because you will never find them browsing normally

Which it does, it will not work with these services and will allways use the Google DNS servers.

Late reply but I did a bit of research on this as I'm interested in getting a Chromecast myself and you can get around the forced Google DNS servers by putting a couple of static routes into your router, effectively making 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 point to the router instead of Googles servers.

I'm a bit PISSED that you can't change the DNS servers on the Roku 3, just found out today.

It's also hardcoded to point to Google's DNS.

What the hell.

Can you change it on the router itself?
I'm not in a position to try it myself for now, but I think it's not possible due to being a 4G LTE router or so I've read.

So it's basically the perfect storm. Can't change the DNS on the device or the router. Stuck with local Netflix. SMH

I probably would've gone with an Apple TV instead, if I knew about this DNS thing.

Netflix is competing with far more streaming services than they once were - services that are also anxious to ink exclusivity deals with major studios.

You can't really pick a single streaming service and use it exclusively these days. If you try, you're bound to be disappointed.

So what you're saying is that in this case, competition is bad

For me, I signed up for unblock us, then input the DNS settings on my router. Anytime I want to change netflix regions, I just load up unblock us website on my ipad, change the region, and Netflix auto updates to the correct region on my PS3 after I exit the app (not sign out) and open it back up.

I wish you could set the categories that are visible, as I have no use for family flicks, sports, or local films. Whereas I certainly would have use for random picks, watch it again (featuring those I've rated 4 and 5 stars), and recently added/new releases, which are often absent nowadays.

I had Netflix for DVDs before the streaming got really big. Evnetually I was lurned into trying out streaming as it had a bunch of classic shows I wanted to see then when they price hiked I dropped the DVD service.

I let it go about a year and a half ago when I realized that were very few movies I had any interest in and most of the time I wasn't even using it myself. In fact I kept my sub longer than I probably should have simply because my little brother and sister across the country were using it to watch nicktoons, but even they told me they weren't interest anymore. I stopped when I looked up my account and saw I hadn't streamed anything in 5 months.

I enjoyed it for a while when I had it but there are only so many B-movies I'm willing to watch.

I don't think I ever had that I wanted to see a movie, searched for it on Netflix and found it on there. And that includes old ones. Still I'd much sooner cancel my cable than Netflix. I only watch regular television for the news and some comedy shows. The rest is just inane celebrity stuff mixed in with commercials nowadays. At least Netflix has a few good series and documentaries on demand.

The Disney deal sounds really sweet though.

Complained about it earlier, but absolutely. I don't understand how Netflix didn't realize that their system stops showing you major movie categories, and things you'd think that would be permanent fixtures like "Recently Added" . Just because I haven't watched a horror movie on this account doesn't it should not show me the category altogether.

There's a feedback loop that the system creates. You watch a few movies, it personalizes your account and shows you what it thinks you'll like. You watch some of those movies, and it subcategorizes again. But after a while, types of content it thinks you don't like won't get displayed. And since its not displayed, you don't watch it (because you don't know its there), so it keeps thinking you don't like category, so it keeps not showing you that content. Eventually your account only shows a fraction of what Netflix has to offer. I wonder how much money was spent on getting the rights to show How I Met Your Mother on Canadian Netflix, because I didn't even know it was on Netflix until I created a fresh account and saw it under "New Releases", a category I hadn't seen in ages.

I've even tried rating sports content with a single star, but the category still remains there. :/ And I was about to send them feedback about it, but there was no option for it on their website.

EDIT: Regarding the addition to your post, the rating system works pretty well otherwise for me, after I reviewed every single title I had seen on their website. Although, after my girlfriend watched a couple of musicals on my account, it started recommending content to me based on that, eventhough it goes against my review profile.

I've found the Netflix interface and recommendation engine to be absolutely terrible. I often have the same movie or show recommended across multiple categories. Amazon isn't much better though, in fact I think it's worse. I still wish Vudu offered an option for unlimited streaming or X streams per month because I think they are bar none the best option for movies.

I treat netflix like a rental video store from the 90's. I don't go in with any idea of what i want, i just browse until i find something interesting. If you go into netflix looking for a specific film or TV show, you're bound to be disappointed.

Yeah, top picks category offers me all kinds of crap I'm not interested in, but after watching and rating positively several horror, thriller, and scifi flicks it started offering me more related categories; supernatural, serial killer, gory...

I just stick with TV shows now instead of movies. Might watch a new release every now and then, but the movie selection is pretty awful. TV shows are where it's at.

This is pretty much what I use them for as well. Every once in a while there is a new release that I haven't seen and am interested in watching.

HBOgo is pretty awesome though. My husband and I leech off of his parent's account.

I love that special. I've watched it a few times. John Mulaney is easily one of my favorite comedians right now. He's a funny man with clever material and great delivery.

I've seen the trailer for his new sitcom and I agree it doesn't look great. I heard nothing but great things about the pilot, so I sort of expected quite a bit more from that trailer. It had funny parts, but was mostly a bit too... hammy? Over the top? Forced?

I'm reserving judgement because of my love for his standup and the good word of mouth the pilot had, but I wasn't enthused by the trailer. Good news is that it means it's not too indicative of the quality of his standup special. I'd highly recommend checking out New in Town.
Thanks. Just added it to my queue.
