Netflix's Dear White People official trailer

Hopefully it's better than recent Netflix originals, I dunno if it's a quantity thing but it seems like the quality has been sliding.

I've noticed the same thing. I'm definitely more on the side of it being a quantity thing. Netflix went from having like four or five to what seems like eleventy billion recently.

That said, I can't wait to watch this. I loved the movie and look forward to more in-depth explorations of the characters and some new storylines.

Crazy thing is, the main political point of the original Dear White People film (which is great) is basically: "Don't do blackface"

you'd think that wouldn't be a controversial statement nowadays, but here we are.

The term “white fragility,” was coined by Dr. Robin DiAngelo, a multicutural education professor at Westfield State University, who described the term as, “-a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves.”

.

The movie was good, but not great. Even though this is lifting some beats directly from that (and the book) I hope they can push things a bit further. I'll definitely be watching.

I can't wait. A guy I met a while back is in it, a bit role I think, but I've been seeing him posting about it on Facebook about the show. And I fucking loved the movie. Can't wait to give the show a shot too.

Looks ok, nothing about the trailer particularly grabbed me though. Might be more interesting if I was younger and had attended college or could relate to the setting more. I'll give it a try though.

Looks good. Will watch.
The same people that are mad would still be mad if the show was called Brand x.

Changing the title would at least remove the initial kneejerk reactions.
Though the two trailers would probably have people calling SJW propaganda or white genocide.
Just a little less of it.

they gonna leave out that wackass interracial relationship out the plot this time?

As someone else stated, there's 2 interracial relationships in the movie (well, technically 3, but that one isn't really a relationship so much as one person flirting with another who isn't used to being flirted with). One is clearly in this trailer, the other one isn't (but I'm assuming it's still going to be in the show).

Looks amazing...of course white fragility is in full effect.

Also, can we get a "Superman-type" filter to Jack'd, Grindr, Tinder, etc.? Asking for a friend...

I think this would go over better with a better title

maybe people should should actually look at what they're poppin off about for 30 seconds

for the record haven't seen any of this and have no particular opinion about it but, i mean, you know. read the first paragraph. watch the trailer. if someone has time to lose their shit on a messageboard or youtube or whatever they got a minute to actually learn about what they're poppin off about

(not you personally, just saying in general)

Wow, this trailer is a lot lighter-hearted than the movie's trailer, which really seemed a lot more confrontational. The movie was alright, this looks better though. I'm a little confused why it exists since it seems to be retreading the plot but okay.

Simien (the director of the movie) is also making this, so I'm guessing he wanted the chance to go deeper into the story (and if it's successful, possibly continue it), especially since it's supposed to be his story. If it handles things as well as the movie did, I can see it becoming like a modern day version of A Different World.

Judging by the trailer (mainly the bit where she gives her friend shit for sleeping with a white guy), main girl's character arc will involve her learning to be a little less judgmental.

I'll give it a watch. The google search option bit got a good laugh out of me.

Where'd you watch it?

Hopefully it's better than recent Netflix originals, I dunno if it's a quantity thing but it seems like the quality has been sliding.

It's a problem that Netflix and Amazon will see with expansion and needing more and more 'original' content. Some of it will be just OK not great.

It'll be a hurdle to get past keeping some actors from the movie and replace others. I mean, I get why Tessa Thompson isn't reprising her role when she's off doing Westworld and Thor.

I guess it will find its audience, I can't relate to it though, especially ivy league setting, that's more of a turn off than the title. (yeah I know it's her radio show).

Why do you need to relate to it though?

I'm white and not even from America (so never been to an ivy league school) yet I enjoyed the movie.

Idk, ever since I was younger I just despised any fictional settings in an ivy league school. The Todd's and Skips of the world just .....Idk....Don't like them. It's no surprise that the main character needs to have a radio show to address them, idk, I guess I don't like entitled snobs. I think that's natural.
