New 3DS or New 3DS XL?

How's the glossy finish on the XL?

That's my only gripe with the new 3DS, the matte black on the current XL is perfect.

I now have both, and I'm leaning towards keeping the XL despite the faceplates and coloured buttons of the non-XL.

Side by side the screen on the smaller version is definitely sharper and, at least on my unit, a bit warmer, which I like.

But the XL is just so much more comfortable to hold for me.

Check out those scan lines in the green letters on the XL!

Glossy as f. Looks gorgeous.. until you touch it.

May as well put up a pic of mine:

Its nice until you realize that the underside gets more and more slippery and greasy as you play it, even if you wash your hands every bloody time you play.

As soon as a matte bottom cover plate becomes available as a spare on ebay, I am switching it over. Literally my only complaint about my New XL.

It is that bad? How would you replace the bottom plate if they released a replacement?

My ultimate 3DS would be the weight and thickness of the DSi XL with the same matte finish and with the large screens of the n3DSXL but the colored buttons of the n3DS and some insane high res, like 640 x 480 lololol and move the analogue stick back down a bit so it's in line with the face buttons on the right. No, move the face buttons up a but so they're in line with the analogue stick on the left, that'd be more comfy.

By taking it off? lol

You have to remove the bottom plate to get to the SD on both versions. The entire underside plate comes off, as this photo I just took of my EU unit shows:

It's fully replaceable.

This is as good a place as any to ask but I was wondering which out of these two choices I should go for.

Option A: Get a normal 3DS XL (or maybe even one refurbed from Nintendo) and get 2-3 games or..

Option B: Go straight for New 3DS XL and get one game.

This is from the stand point where I'm moving from Vita to the family ...

Any other suggestions?

Haven't really kept up with the new 3DS news. Does his make exist games better at all? Or is it another DSi situation?

My New Nintendo 3DS XL is without a doubt the best Nintendo handheld I have ever owned, and the improved 3D effect makes the original 3DS XL seem absolutely broken by comparison.

Yeah, consider staying away from the XL. Coming from the Vita the pixel density of the nXL will blow your mind and not in a good way.

And how is that an option in America?

Get the N3DS XL. Trust me, unlike many others I own one and can fully vouch for the 3D effect being something you do NOT want to miss.

Sorry if this has been answered but which one will original DS games look better on? I want to play through Chrono Trigger.

They're better in the sense that it takes less time to start them up/exit them, as well as have better 3D effects. For Super Smash Bros for 3DS, you can also use Miiverse on New 3DS XL.
Games that used Circle Pad Pro support the C-Stick too.
Some non-exclusive games are also enhanced in various ways (amiibo support, camera control, etc).

But other than that (like improved framerate), nothing else

I am playing through it on both my DSi XL and N3DS Xl right now funnily enough

DSi comes out on top obviously, but the N3DS is damn close.

I was a bit troubled over wether I would get a N3DS XL, a N3DS, or keep rocking my golden ALBW XL as well, but then I received an invitation to the Ambassador Party. I was afraid the screen would be too small (don't take me wrong it IS smaller and it FEELS smaller), that I wouldn't handle the grip and that my e-penis wouldn't shrink, due to a "downgrade" (yeah, this is a factor too, hell, you ARE downgrading)... But, I ended up biting. And I must say, it is awesome.

The 3D effect is absolutely awesome, my o3DSXL's 3D effect bored me right away, I had to keep tilting my head to adjust the images, and I had to avoid any movements (well, this is just normal, but pausing a game to scratch your head/nose/ears/whatever itched, was stupid), so I turned it off, and would occasionally turn it on. Now I seldom turn it off.

Also the screen, being bigger than the OG shows some scanlines due to the lower pixel-density, but nowhere near as much as the XL model. Faceplates having textures seems like a very good idea as well, I can't wait to get a wood/felt textured one for the bottom plate.

TL;DR: On the one hand, switching from a XL to a N3DS is daunting, but not as bad as you might think. It is vastly different, but not worse. Switching from an old model to a New model, on the other hand, is nothing but the right choice, if you can spend the money (maybe reselling your old model).

Damn, even Persona Q, a game that never struck me as a having a particularly great 3D effect is even more awesome now.

I went ahead and preordered N3DS XL Black. SNES buttons and faceplates are nice, but the novelty would probably wear off fast. Bigger screen and more comfort never gets old.

I do like that the new regular 3DS looks more like a DSi/Lite than the original 3DS did. That was always a nice form factor to me. The problem with it on the original 3ds and the new regular 3DS is that the presence of the analog slider forces them to put the Dpad in a terribly uncomfortable position.

I reckon the presence of the dpad forces them to put the analog slider in an uncomfortable position. :P

I cant believe some people are considering compromising the user experience for faceplates and colored buttons.

There's compromises either way. The shitty dpi, glossy finish and extra weight of the XL are no joke.

The faceplates and colored buttons are just bonuses on top of a much more practical form factor.

What you are saying is a matter of preference.

I for example do not share your view and it would be a folly to assume everyone should.

Dude, it's like 70 grams difference. Even a child should have no problems with that. Some people like glossy finish, some don't. DPI complaint is valid, but I'd take bigger screen and lose some DPI any time of day. Not to mention that many people say that XL is more comfortable to hold.

Exactly, it is a matter of preference and its childish to assume everyone would immediately share the same opinion you do. I wouldn't expect that of me, nor should anyone else of themselves.

Don't be a dick. Not everyone needs to share your opinion.

Hey man, you were the one boasting earlier about your XL that "unlike many others you own one" so presumably your opinion should be worth more than theirs, but when I actually own BOTH you want to get snippy about me putting my opinion forward?

It's cool, you bought the XL and you like the XL. I bought both and I prefer the non-XL, but why you gotta get all snippy and bitch about my personal preference just because you don't agree?

It's 70 grams more on a system that's already too heavy for its size and poorly balanced.

I put my opinion forward as an opinion where as yours was a definitive statement.

Whatever, not worth arguing. I'm in too much pain to give a shit.

edit: Wtf? You've posted like 10000 times in this thread telling everyone what to think, I make a couple of posts to the contrary and you call me childish for what? Tell the nurse to go a bit easier on the painkillers genius.

Another one bites the dust/ignore list. Sorry, I don't want to argue. Not worth the hassle.

Sorry for the language. I apologize.

Smash was the first time I've sat and played a DS for a long period and it was awful. So I'm definitely going with the XL when the New 3DS is out.

I can see myself putting a lot of time into Monster Hunter and Majora's Mask and I don't want the headache from the tiny screen. To be honest I'm not sure what Nintendo was thinking going with a screen that small.

My XL arrived and I finally opened it today, after going out and getting a charger. It's my first XL of any Nintendo DS variation. In fact, I've only used an XL a couple of times at events.

As my name suggests, I'm paranoid about my stuff due to OCD. I fear breaking everything I touch. And something is bothering me/making me curious here.

When I opened the system and set it up, the top screen opened to where it was upright. I left it like that, because it seemed like the hinges were pretty stiff and I didn't want to put too much pressure on them or break them.

Now, obviously, the thing is supposed to move into a flat position.

Is this normal? Should I just try putting a bit more pressure on it until it changes position?

Yeah, that's fine. Every model after the OG can click into three different positions. Just push it a bit further.

Wellll being the USA XL it is, cant complain though, bigger screens are better for immersion. Wish it was matte though... :(
that's a major bummer.

Question for fellow UK gaffers in the house. I'm wanting to stick a pre order in but not sure where. At the moment I've only decided on the XL and don't know which colour yet or what game to get with it. Any decent deals anywhere. I've only come across zavvi that bundle majoras mask for £199.

Question for all. Never played MM or any MH game before. I'm having a hard time deciding between them.

I'm not from UK, but I can give you a few hints. So far, the best EU price for N3DS, charger and MM is on Amazon FR. For some odd reason, Amazon UK doesn't even take preorders for N3DS.

Regarding limited editions, no EU Amazon takes preorders yet, but several have them listed. Getting MM edition might prove to be a difficult task because they are mostly sold out or too expensive.

I can't tell you which game is better because I haven't played either yet, but I know that when it comes to MH, you should be prepared to invest a lot of hours in it (I'm talking 100+). I've preordered MM (looks great and the hype got to me), although I plan to get MH4 later.
