New action packed SC: Blacklist footage

ugh.. Sorry iMax, you're a pretty good poster. But UGH.

It's like I'm in an alternate reality.

Sorry guys, don't know what to say! I love that game. I can understand why die-hard Splinter Cell fans saw it as a major departure to the series' core but I think it was a good turn to make at the time. Even features like the B&W filter and the projected text really struck a chord with me. I was upset too at the omission of Spies vs Mercs but the co-op was still a great experience. It's one of the few games that I can always go back to and have a fun blast through.

Is there any chance of this going to be on next-gen Consoles? Or is my mind making confusion with other game fellow GAFfers?

It's like that for every game, especially for stealth-based games like Deus Ex HR and Hitman Absolution; you can play the entire game in a pacifist, quiet and stealth way but the majority of promo material was aimed at the action crowd which makes up for at least 80% of the sales.

They did that with Chaos Theory and everyone loved it. Because there were clear benefits to stealth. Now it is just shoehorned in to an action game.

Deus Ex does the same thing Chaos Theory did and everyone loves it as well. Hitman Absolution tried to go more action oriented and it failed miserably.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

I think there's a fair chance it will be, especially with the late release date. Who knows, it might be in development for next-generation consoles already without anyone even knowing. I guess we'll find out in a few months.

Looks better than conviction, but I'm a little scared of action segments similar to uncharted (the E3 demo kind of hinted at that) and I'm not sure if I'll like the new Sam as a character.

Looking good.

So what detractors think now? Better or worse?

I think it looks like a more complex Conviction which is nice since I enjoyed my time with that game especially the terrorist hunt missions. Looks like Blacklist is continuing on that formula and builds up on it by bringing back mechanics and gears that were the staple of the series.

But personally speaking, this isn't the direction that I want the series to continue on. I would love if they go back to Chaos Theory's emphasis on evasive stealth and open-ended missions that feel like real-world believable locations instead of arbitrary corridors designed entirely upon the idea of dispatching your enemies instead of avoiding them (Sure, you could argue that they're putting more emphasis on the "Ghost" playstyle but the annoyingly forced QTEs and "set-pieces" will always be there).

That being said, I still believe Blacklist will end up being a good but flawed game.

Nice, thanks for answering.

Man watching him move along walls is crazy. Is he spider-man? And the enemies must be half blind. He then moves in clear view of one of the guys and he only reacts until right when Sam is in front of him. He also must be psychic he didn't flip that light switch. Game is weird.

Didn't really like the original Splinter Cells (not saying it's a bad game, just didn't like it myself) but Conviction was really fun to play.

This not so much, but I might rent it for the heck of it.

Don't ever admit liking SC: Conviction in public if you want to avoid those kind of reactions. Like it secretly.

Anyone else feel that Ubisoft, PR department is training their guys that do the interviews in a damage control sort of way? "Make sure to say "stealth" and "ghost" a lot." It was also kind of strange how he was saying how everyone is making it a point to make sure that every level could be approached in many different playstyles....then minutes later describing the opening of the game is incredibly action packed.....what?

This has been a problem in all Splinter Cell games. I was playing Chaos Theory the other day and was standing directly in front of an enemy, maybe 2 feet away. Its just that it was semi dark so i was pretty much invisible. Hoping it will be something that can be changed with difficultly settings.

He looks like he's been awake for about six days. Does he even know what's real and what's not anymore?

I'm kinda hyped. Especially because of that mode removing Mark & Execute, the goggles to see through walls etc. but also about Mercs vs. Spies having a return.

I have yet to play through my copies of Double Agent and Conviction though. Having already completed Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory.

I think Pandora Tomorrow is my favorite but Chaos Theory were grand and had an absolute perfect singleplayer campaign.

Well, it could've been worse.

I'd play the original trilogy again any day. The later iterations were almost completely different games to me so I kind of stopped caring about the future of the franchise. Blacklist is just so far from my idea of the Splinter Cell name.

I would have loved to have seen that, honestly. It was an interesting concept. I liked Conviction a lot, but that open-world social stealth game might have been more interesting. I guess they canned it cause it was too similar to Assassin's Creed?

Actually the original Conviction looked interesting as shit. Too bad they started using a lot of those ideas for AC.

The concept was fine with me. It looks cool. It's just... that hair. It's not Sam. Anyway, it looks like this project has very loosely evolved into Watch Dogs.

I don't mind, Watch_Dogs has some seriously amazing potential. Definitely the most interesting thing out of the last E3, I'm really excited for that.

So, Sam's base is now a plane. Does anyone wanna take bets at what point in the game it'll be shot down and Sam will have to navigate the inside of the plane as it's following and then have to fight off an onslaught of villains at the crash site?

I seriously think people are judging Conviction and Blacklist too hard.

I loved Splinter Cell & CT (not a fan of PT though nor DA), but I always wondered why my super stealth ninja with Spec Ops training, was such a turd fighting his way out of any situation as soon as discovered.

Some people even critizised the addition of the knife to CT because "going stabby stabby isn't stealthy! Boo". I love my stealth and love to have the option to go all out Jack Bauer.
Best thing would be some sort of time limits, moving targets and bonus objectives that will have you to combine what ever option you use with speed.
You know perfectly well how to be stealthy and speedy, even better.

Oh yes... and have stealthy movement (climbing and scaling) be slow again to balance this sort of gameplay.

No. Better luck next time.

the only good thing about Conviction was the menu. There's hope the one in Blacklist will be equally as good, at least I've got something to look forward on Youtube

"Not necessarily moving away from stealth"

*shows Sam sliding down zipline to tackle guy and smash his face into floor*

well at least they got rid of the fade to black and white idea. That was so terrible, I couldn't even get close to finishing Conviction.

For the record, if I wanted to pick up Chaos Theory and Double Agent which are the versions to get? I rented DA on the ps3 but I never finished it. PC is not an option.

Showing off stealth game play is boring from a marketing perspective, of course they are mainly going to focus on showing off the cool action scenes.

Both Chaos Theory and Double Agent on the first Xbox.

I loved that. Made staying in the shadows so much more simple compared to staring at a bunch of coloured lights and lines.

Double Agent xbox is probably right up there with Chaos Theory as the best Splinter Cell in my opinion. Yes, if you are going to play CT play it on PC.

BTW, tried playing Double Agent a PC a few days ago...fuck that is a bad port. Can't get 1080p res and controller support is only for wired controllers. Also the game will get corrupt quick saves and cause the game to crash all the time. The lighting actual looks better on 360 too.

Loved Double Agent. That prison level was awesome.

even if there is a real stealth option the game is no longer really designed around it. Going in guns blazing will probably always be the easier option and I doubt they will reward being stealthy in any meaningful way. By meaningful I mean beyond achievement points.
