New Amiibo trailer, featuring Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Honestly think they should have not used the fighters in the game for this.. it's so confusing.. Moms probably think you have to buy the statue before you even get the character in the game.

What they should have done is create like 5 or so amiibos... And instead of the amiibos being characters in the game, they would be non playable characters, like Shyguys, Goombas, Bloopers, etc etc.. Actual pet like characters, or even originally designed pet like characters that could aid you in battle.

That would be infinitely cooler, and I'd buy all those little mothers.

people would go absolutely ballistic that they "cut characters to place them behind DLC figurines"

No man.. Imagine.. Imagine if Amiibos were like Sonic Adventure's Chaos.. Little characters that clearly couldn't be playable because they're small or something, but act like little pets that can fight for you. That would be so amazing.

I still think it'd be the coolest if they were various Nintendo baddies or simple things that would never make it into the playable roster.

Buy and train a freaking blooper to help me battle in the game? Hell yes!!

Buy a mario figurine in a game where I can already make custom Mario characters and fight against them, and put them on my team... well... Huh? Ehm.. How about no.

this is from yesterday's Smash press event:

you can see that the stand is different. the "final" one in your pic is not the actual final one.

Wow. They made Peach a butter face now. Why the hell did they change the prototype face to...that? 0_0

The prototype Peach overall was perfect. :(

I would expect the prototype to be of a higher quality than the actually mass produced toys unfortunately. We were never getting figma level quality or similar.

I expect only a slight drop from the prototype but this Peach Amiibo is practically a complete redesign, The hair looks really cheap now, facial expression changed, and fingers are stubbier. I even heard the upskirt is gone now too.

THIS is the Peach figure being shown for preorder on online sites:

More than just a slight downgrade of quality. Needless to say, all 6 of my Amiibo preorders are now cancelled, and yes Peach was one of them.

I guess I'm just a cynical person. I didn't expect them to look anything like the preview images. The shots just looked too good for what is essentially a children's toy.

Does anyone have comparisons of the other figures yet?

I feel like I watched a 4 minute commercial and still don't really know what amiibo is for. Is it basically cheating? I don't understand how that fits into the balance of the game.

you scan your toy into the game

it becomes a computer controlled player that levels up the more you play with it. smash bros CPUs go up to level 9 normally. this "amiibo CPU" goes up to level 50.

it's just a silly little thing for fun on the side. it doesn't fit into any balance of the game.

Yep, you can do all the co-op stuff like Classic and Event mode with amiibo.

Also, it's probably because I'm on mobile, but what exactly is wrong with the new Peach amiibo?

well, for me, it looks downgraded. the images of amiibo I've seen in the past, which I guess were prototypes, looked "too good" to be $15, and now I wonder if maybe that was true because of production figures being downgraded from the prototypes. The picture seems to bear this out.

In the case of Peach, while the prototype actually looked accurate -- what she is "supposed" to look like -- the production model sort of has that blob face you often see on action figures and other toys. "THIS is han solo?"

I pre-ordered the Peach amiibo and I'm really close to cancelling it now. It barely even looks like her :/

The quality of the final builds is so disappointing.

I have Mario/Yoshi/Link pre-ordered sonce I know they'll be used in other games. (Hyrule Warriors/Mario Party/Captain Toad/Mario Kart and Yoshi's Wolly World)
And then Kirby because...well... It's Kirby! <3

I think everyone is over-reacting, if you are not ready to buy them then just wait for them to be in stores and judge by yourselves, in my experience pictures NEVER do justice to a toy, its always the lightning the primary factor.

I should know, I sell collectible figures for a living.

Whether or not I get one depends on how popular they are in the FSU rec room. If everyone gets one I might get Mega Man or Little Mac or something.

Do you guys think these will have any collectable value.

Is would it be a dumb idea to buy a copy of each one and put them away sealed?

no since nintendo wants everyone to have these guys for use with the system, unless they have RARE ones that you get at some sort of expo or in a hidden wrap package.

I don't see what the problem is, you're not supposed just to marvel at the figure, it's more about it's functionality. In fact, it makes the transformation of the figure to character animation more neat.

Teaming up with your own Amiibo is something I haven't even thought of yet. Like having your own "Pokemon" Smash character that you train and fight alongside. God damn.

Looks like they made variations to the designs more than anything. The quality does look slightly worse, as there seems to be a lack of indentation in places compared to the prototypes, however its not as dramatic as people are making out. The lighting isn't helping as it's almost totally flat and unflattering. Also, the shallow depth of field is causing a softer focus blurring out some of the finer detail. They look fine to me.

Uhhh...is this confirmed to be final? WTF kind of a look were they going for? Unlicensed, bootleg, cake-candle?

You should see the link figure links sword looks bent like crazy this is from the ign video but looks this on other pictures too. Lower detail characters like kirby and pikachu still look alright.

Made with the same material as the iPhone 6™

I've watched 2 trailers now and I can honestly say I have no idea what these things actually do. Aren't these characters already unlocked and can't you save your progress in the game for leveling?

OMG Nintendo stahp.

I'm not jumping off the Amiibo train yet, but I'm definitely gonna wait and see how they are in person before picking some up.

The idea of amiibo in smash is like training a pet. Your character starts out blank so just stands there doing nothing. But by fighting it learns new things and get some rewards for you. So you need to train the amiibo into a fighter. The people with the hands one say that amiibo pics up your playstyle so if you always go for the items amiibo will go for them also. If you only fight with no items and you place an amiibo in an item match he does know now what to do and how to handel when oponents use it on them. The more you level the better the amiibo gets so in essence its a pet in smash but they say you can use it in more games later on. So the link amiibo is going to be used in hyrule warriors in some way not explained yet. At least this is what i get from all the info that has been around so far.

Agreed. I don't know what people were expecting for $12, nor do I know why you would opt for an amiibo if aesthetic appeal is your main concern. Unless someone is primarily concerned with the pokemon-esque nature of leveling up an amiibo in the game, this really isn't going to scratch the itch a person might have for gawking at a replica of their favorite character, nor did I ever assume it would. As long as the characters are detailed enough that you can readily discern who it is, I don't see how Nintendo is falling short of anything you could reasonably expect a $12 figurine with NFC capability to look like.

Thanks for the explanation!

Why are people surprised at the final amiibo quailty? Remember Marth?:

We all knew this was going to happen.

Looks like bent sword is a feature now :P

But it still could change. Maybe they needed to turn out some amiibos fast to show off on press events. I will hold off my final judgement until i can see them for myself. Hope they look like what's shown on e3. But like with most figures the discussions are always about how they end up looking rather then if they will look the same. Because there is bound to be some changes to the mould for mass production.

There's no reason it can't be both. It doesn't help that A) Nintendo already showed off versions of these figures that are way better looking, and B) I think people would be more forgiving of a downgrade in quality if these were cheaper.

Either way, making the figure intentionally poor quality so you're more impressed by it in-game is one of the worst justifications for anything I've read on GAF.

I think the safest amiibos in terms of avoiding possible downgrades are Mario (no way are they going to downgrade their main mascot guy as long as this is useable in multiple games) and simple stuff like Kirby.

I had a feeling nintendo was going to fuck up the quality of these. I know they're only $13, but I really don't want them to feel like they should have been $5 and included in a happy meal or something. That Peach one looks atrocious. The little excitement I had about these is gone now. It shouldn't be hard to find a middle-ground between great and crap.

And shame on them for using inaccurate pics for preorders still. I hate when companies do that. I guess I'll reserve the rest of my scorn until I see them in real life though :P.

Kinda sucky how low the quality is. I guess it's to be expected but, you know, you always hope these kinda things will be as nice as when they first show them.

I was thinking of getting some, mostly for display on my shelf along with my other game stuff but I dunno now. If the only way to get co-op in things like classic or all-star is with an Amiibo then I might have to get one but if you can just use CPU then it might end up being better to use CPU (getting two trophies at once and being able to pick the CPU character).
