Video interview with BFBC2 producer, Gordon Van Dyke

http://www.thebitbag.com/2009/11/06/gordon-van-dyke-opens-up-about-battlefield-bad-company-2/

We spoke with Gordon Van Dyke, producer of Battlefield Bad Company 2, and he had some very interesting things to say about the game. We talked about animation, lighting, the Frostbite engine and why BFBC2 is the king of the hill.
Great interview and footage. Thanks :D I seriously need to think about putting $5.00 down on a preorder for the beta.

I will probaly play this Beta more than anything else. God, BC1 is my personal MP GOTG. This just looks so much better.

*deep breaths*

This may be the first game I triple dip on.

This game looks so amazing; ridiculous graphics, huge maps, vehicles all over the place, completely destructible environments. I'm really looking forward to this game, haven't been this impressed by an FPS upon first view in a long ass time.

Probably the best thing i heard and saw in that interview: people don't take entire clips to die
oh and they'll never be 'games for windows'
fucking win dice

I am used to the COD and KZ2 styles of shooting. BFBC game play feels a little funny to me but damn did I enjoy the humor and vibes from the demo. Dude with the moustache cracks me up even when remaining silent. BC2 looks awesome. If only it played like COD/KZ2..

By the way if anyone wants the original full resolution/lowest compression screenshots from EA directly they're all here: http://info.ea.com/product.asp?s=2530

The videos get posted there also.
Thanks a bunch. I've been looking at a different EA Press site for the longest time and it never has new Bad Company stuff. :lol

I really wish I had a PS3 right now (although I'm still not a fan of dualshock fps). There is no way my computer can handle this and the 360 is left out in the cold. I hope the demo they announced that is coming to the 360 "early next year", is in like... January.

if i played PC games, i'd triple dip!

This game looks fucking awesome. Kinda disappointed that it's not coming till next year, but hopefully I'll have my new monitor by the time the beta rolls around so I can actually enjoy the game (SD sucks ass <_<)

Just heard the "PC demo" is coming in January. Are all the demos, (360 demo) coming out in January? I guess I could hold off till then. Keep the beta media coming PS3 folks.

The comments below are from Killzone_Kid, as seen in this thread.

I played it for 6 hours straight only got up once for coffee. It said BETA in the corner so this must be what we will be getting on 19th. Oh and the map was called Arica Harbour.

The perk system is immense and you unlock more as you go. From what I've seen there are no stupid perks like in CoD4, they all have a purpose to fit your playing style. All perks and unlocks are mostly tailored for your class though.

Each class has 6 tweaks. Primary weapon, secondary weapon, additional weapon, soldier perk1, soldier perk 2, vehicle perk. Then there is also class gadget that is not changeable.

Primary weapon is mainly class specific, Sniper rifle for Recons, LMG for Medic, SMGs for Engineer, assault rifles for Assault. Shotgun goes to more than one class though.

Secondary weapon, mainly pistols, as well as tracer gun for Engineer.

Additional weapon included C4 and mortar strike (air strike?) for snipers, C4 and grenade launchers for Assault, mines and RPGs for Engineer, and for Medic? I didn't check that one properly, Symonator did though. I guess defib, I was revived few times and it felt fantastic!

Perk 1 usually the weapon perk, like red dot scope or more ammo carrying or more hand grenades, better accuracy. Perk 2 is soldier perk, more health, become lighter and faster etc.

Vehicle perks I've seen were better armour, sensor radar, some other undefined perk that didn't have a name yet. The extra armour really worked though on my heavy. It could withstand many rockets providing you jump out and keep repairing it. But UAV can destroy a heavy tank with 1 hit. I think you call AC-130 for a missile strike(don't panic it is nicely balanced with long reloads) .

Non selectable gadget is also class specific. Drill for the Engineer, medpack for medic, ammo for assault, I suppose sensor for Recon, because it wasn't selectable on the screen but it was shown as unlocked. Didn't play Recon sorry.

The weapons in this game are SUPERBLY balanced. If anything, the weapons are the game. They feel good, shoot good, sound good, kill good. You can pick any weapon and own with it, I mean it, any. Demize99 has truly succeeded in his magic. There is recoil, you need to shoot in burst for increased accuracy. Mags are only 30 bullets now and if you spray and pray you will run out of ammo before you even manage to hit the barn from inside. Trust me the firefights are short lived and intense you either kill or get killed there are no long shootouts like in BFBC.

_______________

Everything feels like it has more weight to it in comparison to BFBC. There is a perk that makes your soldier lighter and faster, then it feels exactly like in BFBC. But the extra weight is not too bad, though I'd personally would want it exactly like in BFBC.

There is a UAV station at each attackers base. It looks like a tick sign on a minimap. BTW minimap was absolutely fantastic, much much much better than the one on Atacama Desert.

So this station has a joystick and a B/W monitor. You fly a mini chopper almost like a chopper but it is much easier as it hovers very well on its own as it is surveillance craft. You see everything like an eye in the sky and can update your team on enemy positions. But the best thing is if you press fire trigger you call a AC-130 and if you get a confirmation you have to keep the crossair on a target, few seconds later it's hit by a missile.

I'm hyped, will get in the future definitely. I never really played much of battlefield and the trailer sold me. The animations, gun, gunplay, vehicles, and destructibility looks top notch.

I don't really know much about this game but from what I've seen it looks great. I have one question however, it seems the player limit will be 24 players, do we have any idea if this applies to the PC version as well? Because that seems disappointingly low. Of course, if the maps are designed for 24 players they might become too crowded with 64 players but I still prefer large and epic battles in Battlefield.

Iam worried that the single player has lost its tongue in cheek charm, loved the firsts different approach.

Is there much news on the single player side for folks like me that couldn't give a toss about MP?

AFAIK all they've said is that the story would be more serious this time. Having said that, the same characters are returning so I don't really see how that will be possible...

I guess the missions will be serious, but the characters won't be.

Swearing in between cheesy jokes?

I didn't see this posted, so apologies if it is old, but the PC version of BC2 is getting improvements over the console version.

DICE has assured fans that the PC version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be tailored to the platform.

The first Bad Company game never made it to the PC and developer DICE is keen to stress that the PC release of Bad Company 2 will not simply be a port.

Speaking to IncGamers, DICE’s Gordon Van Dyke stressed that each version of the game is being “tweaked and adjusted” to suit the platform.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2“On the PC, it's a PC version, which is getting that same treatment, and then also a little bit more as PC users are generally used to a different type of experience than console users are, and we recognise that and we want to make sure that we give that to the PC market and give the console market more,” said Van Dyke.

When pressed on whether the PC version will include modding tools, Van Dyke stated that while the situation is “really, really complicated” due to the game engine being in its infancy, he did offer some hope for the modding community.

“Once we start getting there and the engine gets to a level where we can release tools that are easy for our own guys to use, and then easy for people publicly, then we'll get into that and we'll really start to focus on it,” he revealed.

“But it's definitely not something that we're like, ‘oh, we won't do that.’”

More good news for PC fans came when Van Dyke that, as well as launching a beta for the PS3, a PC beta will also go ahead.

“We're also going to have a PC beta, and we'll announce more details on that at a later date,” he said.

tl;dr: DICE is accommodating BC2 to PC users and might release official mod tools for the game.

A man could live and die with that.

BF2 inspired a lot of stuff in COD4, if this game has the open maps and vehicle combat of BF2 combined with the infantry combat of COD4, it will be amazing.

Of course, I'm still annoyed that there is no prone and no controllable fixed wing aircraft yet. Get on that, DICE! This is what separates you from Modern Warfare!

The mp looks like its going to own my soul until atleast Fall 2010. However I am a tad concerned at the lack of single player media. Either there holding back something big or it will be pretty much the same as the last one. That would be a shame.
