If I wanted to pick up the series mainly to enjoy story mode and eventually play online, do I need to go all the way back to CT to enjoy the story or could I just snatch up extend and wiki everything before hand?

Extend includes a boiled down version of the CT story, and the full story for CS, (and thus all of the story so far) so you should be set. Though regarding CT at least, you are missing out on some content as the boiled down version is really just the true ending route, and a lot of the enjoyment comes from the gag endings or from some what if sort of character interactions.
What you CAN do though is you can just look up videos of those if you're interested.

I'm just gonna wait for an Extend version of this game. Although I have the Jap CE pre-ordered, I don't need to buy the English version until Extend is out.

I don't think they want to repeat what happened with Extended, maybe we'll get a GOTY version that includes all the DLC but that's it.

It feels like I'm gonna have a character crisis by the time the game comes out. I was planning on learning Kagura, but Terumi looks interesting as well, and I have to play Kokonoe now that they gave her a pilebunker and a rocket punch that sorta looks like Rick Strowd/Vanessa's super.

Kagura looks like he's gonna be so annoying to fight against.

Heh, I remember in Story Mode (in one of the Dream Scenarios or whatever it was called when you got a bad ending) when Kokonoe ranted about not being a playable character and someone (Ragna I think) had to calm her telling she was "the secret weapon of the developers" for when the series needed a push.

I really hope they have at least one more locketest for those characters. I'm worried about it the balancing. 3 brand new characters always results in poorly balancing at launch.

She looks freaking fantastic. This is the second of the new characters to really impress me (Amane). I'm really going to make an effort with Kokonoe because she just looks fun as hell to use. I did not expect her to manipulate movement like that and I like the fireballs she puts on stage. She kinda gives off a Dormington vibe there heh.

The idea of DLC characters being discussed at least seven months before a stateside release is just weird though.

That information is outdated, so they are DLC characters from what I heard from other boards. Well, I guess our best way is waiting for the game release to see what's up with DLC situation.
