The composer is the KH composer, so she definitely worked with Square before. Don't know if that exactly disqualifies them from it, but yeah, long shot anyway.

I love Yoko Shimomura

It sounds more like they are individuals, not the whole developer. Like, maybe they've got a new group of people directing, writing the scenario, designing the battle system etc. that they haven't had before, while Matrix or some other dev is handling the rest.

The game's battle system mixes jobs and abilities. It's close to Final Fantasy V in image. Like a "standard RPG," it will have random encounters and will be turn-based.

You could say a similar thing about 4 Heroes of Light really. This doesn't mean anything. Don't get any hopes up for something exactly FFV.

Vanillaware was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the trailer, especially the picture of the woman at the beginning.

The reason behind the name change might be due to disassociating it with 4WOL since there might be major gameplay changes hence the FFV comment.

4 Heroes of Light had a strong connection with Final Fantasy V with regard to them both having a job system. The difference was that in 4 Heroes of Light there was no permanent learning of job abilities after you took the hat off. As well 4HoL had that odd system where you couldn't directly pick who you attacked or healed and had to rely on the rules of the system instead.

I do love me some job systems...

I have 4HoL queued up to play through... just as soon as I beat either FF6 or FF9...
(Barring I can pull myself away from Disgaea 4...)

Really curious as to who could possibly be composing. I can't think of many notable composers who have not worked with S-E before. There's Sakuraba, and... Hirota? Who could it be? As for scenario staff, it could really be anyone or any company. There are so many out there.

I really loved the music in 4HoL, so I'm a little disappointed if we won't get similarly "retro" tunes here, but I'm still there day one.

OMG... sounds fucking amazing!!! FF5 is my favorite FF. This will sell me on a 3DS I'm sure...

Jobs did affect your overall stat growth right?

Cant be Iwadare since he's done something before...would be cool if it was Go Shiina, Michiko Naruke, or Yuzo Koshiro. Meguro's style doesnt seem like it could fit this environment.

Doesn't the battle system sound like a sequel to 4WOL? Not sure why everyone is getting excited. Guess you put FF5 in your sentence and people freak out.

dat lack of incentive to explore.

I'm not sure why random battles would suggest a lack of incentive to explore. Your incentive to explore is to find loot (or side quests). You also benefit from the fact that less time needs to be spent pacing back and forth "grinding" while still staying ahead of the EXP curve just be exploring.

The key is making the encounter rate low enough, the battle system strategic enough, and implementing systems to avoid burnout on excessive battles (see for example Cthulhu Saves the World, Earthbound, Guardian's Crusade).

There are certainly games with random battles that are unenjoyable, but the root of that problem is in the environment design, inventory / loot design, and the mechanics of the battle system. I don't think a team that fails at all of those things is any less likely to fail whether they choose on-screen battling, visible enemy random battles, fixed step random battles, or totally random battles.

This and Fire Emblem 3DS were the highlights of TGS for me. I bought a 3DS having faith that JRPG's and SRPG's would come, and things are already looking good.

Regarding random battles, they are fine if they're handled like 99% of Final Fantasy IV DS. The encounter rate was fairly low but the fights were still reasonably difficult. The last floor of the final dungeon on the other hand... well that's more of an example of how not to do things.

Final Fantasy 5?

People need to recognize that this game is most likely 4 Heroes of Light 2 with a different name.

Well I think everyone is hoping that they would have fixed the issues present in 4WoL. Hell the title change might indicate that they are going a different direction to the point that it is not a sequel anymore.

As bad as Lunar Subterrane was, it's about 15000% better than The World of Darkness in FFIIIj, so I think they learned their lesson ;)

If you consider 4WoL's battles to be like FF5's, I don't know what to say.
Soooooooooo different.

They're working on some freemium action MMO thingie.

welp, I'm out before I was even in. Why do developers still do this?

To annoy you personally.
