New Canadian Money - It's Plastic!

Why did they start with the 100$ bill? It would make more sense to start with the most used bill, like a 5 or a 10 bill, and go up instead of the other way.

We also have a plastic bill (just one, the 20) and since I mostly only carry 20s and 50s, it's really nice knowing what is what by feel. I don't see the point of using plastic for bills that are so rarely used - they will last forever anyways.

Not necessarily. If someone is capable of counterfeiting bills, they would likely do the highest denomination first no? So why wouldn't we minimize the impact of counterfeiting by releasing a new 100 first?

It's also the one they have to print the least of first. I'm sure they want to test out the water first.

Seems like the same kind of bills Costa Rica recently put into circulation.

Pretty but they feel so weird.

Counterfeiters will find a way to get by the new security features. The problem is that counterfeiters like to like to conterfeit some of the pre-1995 bills, because there aren't really any security features.

EDIT-I'm talking about the U.S., of course.

How environmentally friendly is this, since they are using plastic?
Well polymer wouldn't really biodegrade but it's not like the current paper notes (which are paper and cotton blend IIRC) but to be fair, you drop a bill, someone is going to pick it up to use.

I am jealous of your cool money.

US money sucks. We can't even get a damn dollar coin. EDIT (for clarification): We can't get a dollar coin that is used commonly.

Probably more so since they will last longer. You don't often see a bill older than 10-15 years. Yet we still have coins in circulation from 50+ years ago. Plastic bills will hopefully last a lot longer than 15 years, so we will have to print less.

Uglee! But I would like to know how it feels, canada GAF send me one or two bills for further examination.

I can ship you a bill this week for about $125 ($100 + exchange + shipping + insurance) USD. Oh, for free? LOL.

Yeah we can. The mint will even ship them to you in bulk if you like.

Also, I don't ever want money that's different sizes. My eyes work.

Why did they put the black guy on the 1 dollar bill?

I got some as change from a subway ticket machine once, I thought they were parking tokens :lol

Well we can, but they aren't generally accepted among the populace and you aren't going to ever get them as change from a transaction (unless it's some machine thing). So it'll always just be me walking around with a slowly depleting supply of dollar coins getting weird looks everywhere I spend them.

Also, I don't ever want money that's different sizes. My eyes work.

But could pull cash out of your wallet without even looking and know what you're getting!

We used to have plastic money here in brazil

It started to discolor with time, pretty bad stuff, glad it was only a comemorative thing.

Sweet. I can't tell you how annoying it is to go through American a handful of American money. With other currencies around the world, including our beautiful Canadian money, you see the colour and know immediately what it is.

I don't know how you guys are so ahead in some areas, yet so laughably behind in others.

Costa Rica has some of the best looking notes out there....out of the Polymer notes they take the cake.

I also really like the Kwacha polymer notes.

Quite possibly the worst summary of the Bill of Rights I have ever seen.

Not that it is inaccurate, but it is even more legalese than the actual text.

All of those systems function on familiarity. I(or any American) can tell instantly what denomination I'm looking at.

That's great for tourists. It just takes much longer for someone to become "familiar" with them then. For what purpose? So that the country can always have its precious green money? And the money always feels thin, cheap, and flimsy.

Many efforts have been put forward to make US money more modern, but any such actual change would be met by an insane amount of resistance by the US public.

Apparently US money "looks like money", and anything else is an abomination.

It's the same reason Americans still have $1 notes when hardly anyone else has notes of a similar value. I found it baffling, to be honest, how much the dollar coin was hated; I can't imagine getting rid of £1 and £2 coins, but they've got a nice thickness and size to them.

Not crazy about having Obama on the one (wouldn't mind the first Roosevelt if we're picking a president), but these are pretty neat.

I work in banking. I regularly handle money from all over the world. The US currency is definitely among the worst of them. It still boggles my mind how people deal with it.

1. Colours too similar, though that's slowly changing for the better with the newer bills.
2. New bills stick together. This makes it hard to count, and easy to give someone too much or too little money. Messes with counter machines too.
3. Bills degrade quickly.
4. Bill material makes it relatively easy to 'wash' small denominations and use them for counterfeiting.
5. Security features are so-so.
6. One dollar bill! Insanity.
