New Castlevania Lords of Shadow Pics

Will this game have equipments and items (like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and the latter games)?

Looks good, really good. I mean better than i expected, sure its a GOW clone, but it could be a good one.

Love Castlevania but hate the 3D ones. Hoping to change that.

It still doesnt seem like a God of War clone to me. Looking at the gameplay/trailers, it seems more or less just like a Castlevania game with the conventions expected in 3d action/platforming games today. Dont forget about Shinobi, Rygar, and Ninja Gaiden.

Even Wolverine's Revenge followed that formula, but the only game thats a true God of War clone today is Dantes Inferno.

Man that Whip attack looks exactly like the Blades of Chaos. I still dont care, if the game is good bring it. I mean its like people saying "LOL Gears copies the cover system from kill.switch!!", some games just build genre standards.

Maybe...but it just reminds me of a better looking and maybe playing Lament of Innocence (which wasnt that bad as far as 3dvania goes).

Similar looking whip.

Yeah i see it. Lets just say that GOW helped with the final result. I think the similarity is more visible during combos. Certainly the whip lends itself for a similar animation than that of the blades though, cant really see how they could do it any other way.

I agree on not caring about where refinements and inspirations come from, as long as its not a direct copy of the system. Its just like complaining about Gears and Uncharted like you said. Does look like it has the potential to put Castlevania back in high regard where it belongs. Presentation is top notch, heres hoping the gameplay stays fun throughout.

Let us pray.

I think its still up there for dedicated gamers, but some spotlight certainly wouldnt hurt.

Bring it back to consoles! just keep the handhelds with its 2D goodness :)

Hopefully the third time's the charm for MercurySteam, cuz an effort on par with their first two games is just going to bury Castlevania further.

I really like the art, and graphics of this game. Coming from someone who isn't a huge fan of the Castlevania games, I hope this turns out well, especially if the 20 hours length comment I heard recently is true.

This game is looking great, as long as it plays well I will certainly line up to buy this. The only types of Castlevania games I would want to see are this and a full out HD game in the same 2d style and gameplay as SoTN. I was disappointed to see what they did woth the HoD XBLive title.

I like the setting but i feel they just use the Castlevania name here to sell another GOW copy and that could rule out a more platform orientated Castlevania game i would rather see .

All of the games you mentioned have their own tempo to the action, though, along with other unmentioned games like Devil May Cry and Onimusha. If you were to say that Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden are similar games, then I'd have to light you on fire and roll you down a hill, because they are completely different in all but the most superficial ways. People right now are calling "God of War" on Castlevania for a few reasons, I think:

1) Thematically there is unfortunately a lot in common for Castlevania and God of War. They both involve battling huge mythical creatures in an ancient environment. Rygar also shared this element, albeit in a slightly less conventional way (who hasn't wanted to kick Aristotle's ass in his true one-wingel angel form? Take that, virtue theory!).

2) Gabriel is sporting Kratos' weapon. It's not a whip, like in Lament of Innocence. It's an extendo-chain-thing with a variable range depending on what the combo requires. Worth noting this is a much more player-friendly road to take with a chain-based weapon than what LoI attempted by fixing the range. Rygar also has a somewhat similar weapon, though his weapon is a bit more of a multi-tool.

3) Gabriel moves like Kratos. The way he rolls, the way he runs, the way he swings his weapon, the way he moves along balance beams. All very, very similar to Kratos' animations, and unlike any of the other 3d action heroes, save Dante (from Inferno, not the cool one).

4) The tempo of the combat, the way it unfolds, is very much in the style of God of War, which is different from every other major 3D action game. Devil May Cry is based on pure offence and juggling multiple enemies at once while maintaining a single combo. Ninja Gaiden is a very, very, very defence-focused game, as is Rygar. Shinobi is about chaining enemies together because if you don't keep killing you will die from Draindeath. The flow of God of War is evade, combo, evade, combo. The only other 3d action games with combat like God of War's are Dante's Inferno, Conan, and by the looks of things, Castlevania.

5) There are unfortunately a few other superficial things people are picking up on, like the red orbs for XP from DMC and God of War, and the green orbs/blue orbs to increase health/magic.

God of War did not invent the 3D action genre, but it does have its own unique conventions, most of which contribute to it being the most popular 3D action game. It seems very very likely that if Castlevania is choosing to imitate any 3D action game, it's going to crib from the most popular one, and from everything we have seen, that's exactly what they did.

Is that a bad thing? If they pull it off correctly, no. After all, tons of people's favourite Castlevania is little more than a wallpapered knock-off of another game. Denying the obvious inspiration just shows off a lack of familiarity with the nuances of the genre, though, in my opinion.

What's really going to be crucial is what they bring that is different from previous games in the genre. That will decide if Castlevania is a great game, a good game for Castlevania fans, or just another also-ran. We'll know soon enough.

Well, it's about time they get a 3D Castlevania right, so imitating another good game in the genre is a good start. At least it might be good then.

:lol I'd never say Shinobi was anything like Ninja Gaiden, just was naming different 3d action games, but you're pretty much on target either way. I just didnt want people to write off this as another God of War clone (in case it turns out to be a great game). Then again you're right about Symphony of the Night, and even though it was really just a Castlevania flavored Metroid, people liked it based on its own merits.

Also just noticed how the cross weapon actually operates, so I guess it is more God of War than Lament of Innocence.

This game looks so epic and pretty. I think its an advantage for me that I haven't really played a Castlevania game before so I can go in to this and take it for what it is rather than looking back and saying that isn't right.

To be honest I think having Robert Carlyle as the main character would have made it day 1 for me regardless :D

He mad.

:lol

This is the only single player only game I am buying this second half of the year. Most others are rentals. I'm a sucker for Kojima Productions involvment of any kind. :D

I wish it was more of a traditional Metroidvania type game, but it looks very impressive, this is all in game (in the trailer)?? I hope that the combat goes deeper than God of War.

I'm playing it. The gameplay feels very much like God of War but it also has lots of adventuring, and you can go back to levels to do stuff you couldn't previously, after getting new skills.

Also, the orbs do not function like God of War. XP is granted automatically, you absorb the orbs manually to fill meters that when activated either heal you or make you stronger.

You can also turn on health bars, damage display and stuff.

And it's very much not in canon already. Forget that.

Oh well, what am I doing? The NeoGAF hivemind has already decided this is a pure God of War clone with no ideas of its own. Who am I to change its mind with facts?

Thanks for the info. Check the attitude at the door next time, thanks.

It's God of War.

I guess that will be a problem for me. I've never been into Castlevania, especially since I've been much more of a PC gamers than console gamer for the past 20+ years, but I like the gothical pseudo-medieval feel fo the series. But I fucking HATE God of Warish type gameplay (as well as Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno and all those game s). And the gameplay videos I've seen of Lords of Shadow just confirm my dislike.

Guess I'll wait to see more of the game. A petty, I really wanted to like this.
