New Castlevania: Lords of Shadow trailer from Gamescom 2009

Castlevania is awesome.
When I first got to the "sewers" part in the original God of War, I was like "OMG this is Castlevania 3D... but but but" ... then IIRC, Kojima said something along the lines of "God of War rocks and it would be great if the GOW team did a Castlevania game" .... Jaffe was happy.
After that, God of War 2 introduced squeletons and I was in awe.

Now Lords of Shadow exists and better not disappoint because I'm seriously over-hyped. Hell I played Castlevania 64 and enjoyed it.. and even finished Lament of Innocence.

Well yeah. Gamers complained at IGA, but he I think he did a fine job with the DS games considering the shitty budget he got. I am not sure how much more you can expect him to do with peanuts.

When he got decent budgets he chose to make the 3d games for PS2 as well as nano-breaker. I'll never forgive him for Lament of Innocence; he had the hubris to go ahead and badmouth CV64, change around established storyline for a series and still make a shitty game, arguably much shittier than CV64.

This is indeed looking good, with strong surrounding production values. The game itself we'll see.

That being said, I found myself more tolerant of Curse of Darkness than some others. I had fun with it, partly no doubt due to the variety of--and the rpg-like building up of--those companion demons.

A case in which one couldn't recommend the game be designed as it was, but being entertained by the end result anyway.

well they have to pay with their dignity. being associated with iga and all that

I really dont understand some of the criticism iga get. Yeah, so his 3D castlevanias are subpar, but his 2D games on GBA and DS have received good reviews from critics and are well liked here on gaf. Basically must have games if you own a GBA/DS.

Those games were the accidents. IGA even decreed that Dracula fights were too good for those side works. His favored children have always been the PS2 games, the PSP Rondo remake, and Deathnotevania. You can't just take credit for abandoned children after years of ignoring them, once you notice they've been accepted into prestigious Universities while your chosen heirs fail at lunch.

Of course, my only real beef with IGA was the rule that every Castlevania had to be an Igavania. I believe it stifled creativity. Now that that rule's been broken, I hope that this game's good enough to make us all forget about IGA, so he can be "demoted" to the realm of 2D side scrollers. That would be win-win for everyone. IGA might cry a little, but if he's not big enough to come back from this setback, then he doesn't deserve to. I'm not really sure if I want to tease him and make him cry. I've always had a love/hate thing going with him. But I know that I want to see proof that he's good and demoted.

You don't understand that some people don't like games that other people might like? Wow, really? Lolz.

The whole IGA hate is way over the top. He isn't exactly the best producer out there but certainly not the worst.
But the 3D Castlevanias are better handed to someone else. (Tough it's not guaranteed that LoS will be good.)

He's certainly the worst producer of Castlevania, and also the only one (until now) for what it's worth. Which is mostly why we hate him. I don't like his games, and I want someone else to work on Castlevania. It won't be possible until he's gone, so well, I hope every day that he's gone. Looks like I'm getting closer!

To be fair, I don't either. I don't see how someone can call themselves a Castlevania fan and not like at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the Metroidvanias. Not even if you preferred the original play style to Metroidvania. If we go by just those games, then IGA has to be "okay" at least.

Of course, some people demand more than okay. Even if he's kept the series from failing, it hasn't evolved very much gameplay-wise, and it's high-time for high-res 2D Castlevania to appear on consoles.

If IGA left Konami would probably just forget about Castlevania. Either that or they'd hand the series off to somebody who really doesn't give a shit.

Still at as long as the main character is named Gabriel I'm buying this.

I think Konami would like to milk the living hell out of Metal Gear, Silent Hill and Pro Evolution Soccer forever and to abandon every other franchise.

This game Looks amazing..! I wan´t this now..!

This game looks to be a mix between God of War and Metal Gear Solid. I have never played any castlevania games (and I have played games for over 25 years), so I can´t comment on the relation to this series. The game has some hardrocking action just like God of War, and over the top cutscenes just like Metal gear Solid. This is IMO a very good combination. And I like to fight BIG monsters... the bigger the better.. so this trailer has me breathing very heavy..! :D

BTW: when I look at this trailer, I get the feeling that they used the graphics engine from Metal gear Solid 4.. some of the persons in the cutscenes look like they are taken straight from MGS4, facial expressions and everything.

Jaffe doesn't give a shit. Do you think we could get him?

Lords of Shadow looks too much like a God of War clone as it is.

Actually I guess this could be a Rygar clone as well. Hopefully this game has more than four types of monsters at least

...but how can you say that? IGA is not involved in this game and it's getting the most attention (highest profile, biggest budget) of any Castlevania game since SCIV.

Konami is trying to raise Castlevania's profile. Probably so they can kill off IGA all together!

great voice acting, but much of the trailer had me thinking "is this castlevania gonna see castles?". i get that not everyone's on the Iga train & wants something else, but i dont yet see how this is it - God of War clone etc etc. didnt Castlevana have gothic/horror elements to it?
mind you, id like to be as excited as many here. hopefully we'll see more gameplay soon.

This castlevania looks to have considerably more gothic and horror to it than something like Dawn of Sorrow or Portrait of Ruin though. I mean, you can see a gigantic castle in the background. And it's more medieval European in style than...animu.

(We're excepting Order of Eccelesia here)

I think that Iga has done a fair (but unremarkable) job with the 2D Castlevania. Although recycling ad infinitum the Metroidvania formula with small variations doesn't speak much of his abilities.

Btw, lherre told me he talked with you. Fun times :lol

Gametrailers video interview /w Dave Cox: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gc-09-castlevania-lords/55714

Some tidbits:
-"Much slower pace than God of War or Dante's Inferno". Large emphasis on exploration and platforming
-Classic CV special items(daggers, holy water, etc) confirmed to be in
-Pay homage to SCV4
-No snuffing/whipping out candles to get items, but you do get items by smashing objects with whips
-Two masks: God and Devil
-Golems like SOTC bosses
-Kojima not creatively involved but they "Might stick a cardboard box in there or something"

This is bullshit, they're unplayable.

TBH Lament of Innocence isn't that too bad.
Lament had excellent mechanics and I actually liked the "choose your stage" bit. Too bad the level design was awful.

That's the most promising tidbit I've heard yet. But it will probably include the now very tired combo-heavy combat focus that every other action-adventure-y game released in the last five years has taken on...and that's just not Castlevania to me....and yes, I know it's new beginning for the franchise or whatever and, yes, I know that Castlevanias haven't been like the so-called Action-vanias that I do prefer. I just don't want to get into approximately 15-second or longer engagements with each standard enemy. Leave that sort of gameplay loop for the rest of the action-adventure-y games out there, like NG, GoW, DMC, etc.

Castlevania isn't really about long encounters and heavy combat...it's about surviving tricky setups of dangerous terrain traversal and carefully-placed enemy positions and routes. If the progression through the world is blatantly delineated and is divided roughly by the dedicated platformer-y/swing-y pathway area and the typical roundish/open fight arena-type area, I'm gonna be very sad that they've gone and decided to play follow-the-leader with a license I still try to love, even if only because of its namesake.

Yeah the environments were extremely repetitive, but they were pretty for its time. Anyway glad to hear that this game is linear. I really, really would like to know what Iga thinks of all this. :lol

This is a tired, old IGA apologist excuse that holds absolutely no water, especially in the face of Konami's biggest game designer overseeing this very game.

Please stop rolling out comments like these, people. They used to simply be unfounded bullshit, but now they're clearly untrue.

Here is hoping that the Alucard starring SOTN sequel wasn't cancelled.

This game has Kojima's influence all over it. This game would be nothing without Kojima. In Kojima I trust. Kojima! Kojima! Kojima!

Look at those cutscenes, man. Kojima! The music! Kojima composed it. It sounds just like he composed it. Kojima is developing this game with one hand tied behind his back because he is an amazing Nobel Prize worthy storyteller.

Y2Kev said:
Sam said the orchestra is 120 pieces :o

The budget for the music is probably larger than a budget for the entire DS series...
120?! What. That's insane.

That's a really heartening interview - for me at least. I'm glad they're making it slower than god of war, and the titan fights sound like they could be pretty cool. Hopefully they can nail the 3d platforming. I always that that 3d castlevania needed to be more PoP than GoW. The combat looks to be as clunky as Lament of Innocence, hopefully we'll get some more footage of it to better judge.

I'm right there with you, the trailers have been exceptionally well produced so far. If it delivers on the promise it's show so far then I expect it to be this genre's Dead Space.

Okay, i do not have any history with the series(okay, i remember playing one of the originals on NES) until i played PoR, but i still do not quite understand the hate.

I am guessing it has something to do with all the non-Ds castlevanias(the only ones that i like are OoE and PoR)?

Nooo ... noooooo.
Dead Space was OK but way to repetitive and stretched out.
I hope that there is more priority on creating a varied experience.
