New consoles and rearranging your media center

I've got 2 ports left for HDMIs on my receiver so that isn't an issue. The cabinet though is pretty full and I'm hoping to displace the cable box (cut cable). Failing that I'll have to remove my old offlined NAS and move around the network switch.

8 HDMI inputs on my receiver...and an extra 2 on the TV if needed...so I'll be fine on the input front...

-PS4
-PS3 Slim
-Xbox 360
-Wii
-Cable Box
-Stand alone BD player

The 360 will get moved from my TV stand to the rack next to it where my Wii/SNES/Genesis/modem/router are...PS4 will join the PS3/cable box/BD player on the main TV stand...PS3 will depart once the Xbone arrives...

There will probably be some cleaning up of the rats nest of wires and some rearrangjng of the secondary rack though once the PS4 arrives

I have 2 slots on my receiver still open. Maybe I'll unslot the PS4 from its horizontal space in my center but I get the feeling the PS4 will go up vertical.

I have 3 hdmi ports so blu ray player goes away to another tv and ps3 becomes new blu ray player, satelittle receiver gets stuck with a component connection (who cares about tv) and wii U/ps4/ps3 get hdmi's.

ps2/gamecube/wii are already on an old tv, ps1/n64 are boxed in the closet, and xbox/xbox360/nes/snes are all dead.

I have a small TV stand with a 360, but there's also a PS2 and a DVD/VCR player in there. Gonna take those two out and get a stand for SD stuff in another room, problem solved.

That's what I did a the last console upgrade cycle. I have a PS2 attached to a CRT WEGA on an old 90s-style entertainment center tucked away in a little-used room that could be used as a set for a movie set in 1999. But I don't have room to do that again with my PS3 and circa 2006 DLP television.

PS3 is going to the bedroom. PS4 will take its place in the living room. Blu-ray players everywhere!

This is my plan as well. Almost bought a Roku box a couple months ago for bedroom video streaming, but decided to hold out and use the PS3 for such things!

Guys, I really need some help here.

I have a Kinivo 501bn HDMI switcher (Amazon) and I have the following connected:

Port #1: PS3 (slim)
Port #2: PS3 (fat)
Port #3:
Port #4: Xbox 360
Port #5: Wii U

The switcher is connected through HDMI to the "Game" port on my receiver. When I turn on the Xbox 360, the switcher recognises it and automatically switch to the right signal. But when I turn on my PS3, the switcher doesn't recognise it at all, not even when I move the PS3 HDMI to Port #4.

What can I do about this? :(

I was thinking about putting the PS4 where the PS3 is now and then putting the PS3 in the chest of drawers below and having it connected to HDMI port 2. Then I realised this will probably overheat it.

I have limited space :(

Yeah, I'm currently moving my stuff around to make room. Had to move my Xbox 360; got a long HDMI cable so that I can still play it without having to hook up and/or undo any cables.

Also getting a new receiver too so that will be a bit difficult to set up since I like to hide all of the wires to my devices.

It'll be worth it in the end though. I'm a neat freak. :)

Lol great thread. I was just thinking about this the other day. I have one of those super low to the ground tv stands with only a single shelf in the middle running the entire length. I have my PS3 and 360 on either side of the TV on the actual stand. I think I'll move PS3 over to the left and put the PS4 where the PS3 used to be. I dunno...this kinda stuff usually is spontaneous when I get something new at home. It'll be midnight on the 15th and I'll walk in and it'll magically figure itself out.

Those Ikea shelves with the square cubbies are precisely the right width to fit an Xbox One (couple of millimeters spare each side), but you'd probably (definitely) want to drill vents on the side of the cube you chose to put it in. But it LOOKS cool.

And it makes for a pretty cheap entertainment center. And they have loads of matching accessories.

Dude. I just bought and assembled one of these for the specific purpose of fitting a new ps4 and xbox one in those cubbies. The only issue is that my receiver is now sitting on the top (on the right side) which is a bit sloppier than the vertical setup I had before.

Put two of these on the side of your setup.

It'll match perfectly and look custom, more or less.

I'm thinking of unplugging my 360. There's literally nothing coming out for it that I can think of that I can't play on something else, and I could use the room for my PS4.

My problem is more or less the width of the wall though. That unit takes up all availible wall space without blocking any of my fireplace. So I'm kinda screwed. It still looks clean as hell with a console in each hole and cabinet doors/baskets to throw controllers and wires into though.

Its pretty easy for me since I switched to one console only. On the 15th, I'll be moving my 360 to my bedroom. And the PS4 will take over.

Done.

Replacing Xbox 360 with Xbox One and Playstation 3 with Playstation 4.

Space isn't an issue for me. Done with this generation.

Most likely putting my PS4 next to my PS3 since there's plenty of space on the middle shelf I have mine. There's still a lot of quality games coming to the PS3, I won't just move on. The media center I have is open so there's plenty of space for everything to breathe. The Wii and the 360 have always been on the bottom shelf and so there they will stay.

Lack of console space is one of the reasons I'm not getting a next-gen system yet - there's nothing I want to play on PS4/XB1 yet anyway, so I'm fine waiting.

I'll probably end up selling my 360 at some point, though, and replacing it with a PS4 whenever I decide to get one. Microsoft and their bullshit have really fallen out of favor with me, so I'd be fine just having Nintendo and Sony systems hooked up.

About 2 weeks ago I purchased a new (smaller) tv stand/media center to sit off on a side wall perpendicular to the main media center. That is were I will move the PS3 and 360 here in a few weeks to prep for the 15th and 22nd.

I'm probably going to pick up a 2 or 3 port HDMI switch to run a single cable over to the receiver (which luckily has a port left open to spare). Note: If anyone has a decent (inexpensive) hdmi switch recommendation let me know.

A year or two down the line, once I am mostly done with the 360 and PS3, I will move them over to the legacy TV set up (another room in the basement) to join the other retired consoles. The extra consoles in the house will slowly be phased out as well (including probably giving my 2nd BC PS3 to my wife's family for blu-ray and occasional gaming goodness for when we visit).

Putting the 360 in my closet and keeping the ps3 plugged up due to ps plus.

Replacing 360 with ps4 and then eventually ( sometime in april or before) out the ps3 in my closet until kh comes out and replace it with an xbone.

I've given it a bit of thought because my AVR (an older Pioneer VSX919) only has 3 HDMI inputs, so I'm full up. I will retire my PS3 to the bedroom and sell my now extra PS3, I guess I'll take it to EB or whatever? Would I get a couple of upcoming new games out of it?

I prefer to make room partially because I have two ethernet cables running to the living room now (for PS3 and AppleTV) because in the past I found wifi too flaky for the PS3's shitty wireless adaptor, so my PS4 will be wired as a bonus.

I've thought about it enough that I rearranged my entertainment center a bit so next month I can easily remove my PS3 and then refreshed my memory on how to rename the input on the AVR so I can change it from PS3 to PS4. Yes I'm excited for next gen.

N64 - questionable
Gamecube + GBA Player
Wii U
PS3 (full BC)
PS4
XB1
XB360

If the PS4 can play PS3 games (no reason it shouldn't right?) then I can replace my PS3 with a slimmer, component cable PS2.

Shit, so many controllers where the hell am I gonna put them.

My 360 is moving into another room. The spot it was in is being replaced by the Xbox One. My cable box is moving out of sight since it'll just be controlled by the Xbox One. The PS4 will go next to my Sony AV system, lying flat though. All in all, it should look pretty nice.

As far as HDMI goes, I have 4 ports right now, 1 is a wireless connection to my PC when I want big screen computing, 1 is to the AV system which has the cable running through it, and the 3rd is my Xbox 360. I'll be fine there.

If the PS4 can play PS3 games (no reason it shouldn't right?) then I can replace my PS3 with a slimmer, component cable PS2.

It cannot. Until Gaikai gets going, there is no BC. Even then though, we don't know how that will work exactly.

My current Denon receiver is a few years old and has only four HDMI ports. The addition of a Wii U already has me one short as my DVR, 360, PS3, and Apple TV already tied up the four.). The PS4 will further complicate things, as I'm planning to keep the 360 in place for Rock Band and the PS3 for Dark Souls II and Tales of Xillia II.

AV rack space may ultimately force further reduction, but ideally I'd like to keep everything in place. Unfortunately I'd also like to hold out for HDMI 2.0 which may keep me swapping cables for a few more months until the right receiver comes along.

I will be putting the 360 and PS3 in the family room. My 10 year old gets the PS4 in his room and my 6 year old gets the Xbox One in his.

Father of the year

With 4 HDMI ports on my AVR, I will use them for PS4/XBO/WiiU/PS3, plug an Apple-TV into the XBO, and hide everything in my cabinet. I'll leave the PS3 connected because of PS+. All other consoles (going back to the NES) are stored away.

What.....you can do this??

I still have my broken PS3 on the center in hopes to get it fixed and get my Boondocks season 3 DVD out of it so I'll just replace that with the PS4.

The 360 gets to go back in a box since Microsoft gave up on it in the past few years, so the PS4 will take its place in the center and the PS3 and Wii U will stay plugged in

I also have been trying to decide on how to organize my media center.

I am probably going to move my top tv somewhere else in the room, mount my playstation display onto the top of the media center , and put the xbox one in the middle... or where the xbox 360 is.

I will then hook ps3 and xbox 360 onto a hdmi switch and hook that into the xbox one.

I usually have 1 or 2 from each brand hooked up at all times. It used to be easier to do because my 360 and Wii were mostly backwards compatible and I didn't get a PS3 until long after I was caring about being able to play PS2 regularly. I still kept my PS2 hooked up for a long time though, as well as my SNES.

I need to pick up a Kinivo 501BN for all my HDMI inputs, and then I should be fine. I planned for the future when I furnished my room and got a shelf/cabinet that could potentially accommodate ~6 consoles.

Come to think of it, I need to buy another DVD rack. My current ones are almost completely filled up.

I only have two HDMI inputs on my TV, but I can get by. I'm completely moving the 360 to another room, so the XBO will go there, then I can plug the cable box into it, and then just swap one HDMI port between PS4 and Wii U (not a huge deal). The PS3 will be moved out once I get to play South Park: The Stick of Truth. So, I'm just one HDMI input short. Maybe, I'll buy an HDMI switch, but it doesn't seem urgent.

As for actual space, it looks doable right now. And once, as I said, the PS3 gets moved, I'll actually have a little extra space.

I did something in regards to this subject a couple of days ago.

I had a hdmi/optical switcher setup before, with only 3 devices using the hdmi/optical ports (Ps3, 360 and media player) and had 1 free slot.

I basically rearranged my shelf. Used to have the original xbox, alongside a 360, and the media player + switch was resting on top of the xbox on one rack. Took the xbox and stored it away (as it was pretty much just a stand now anyways, used to use it as a media player until I got a proper one). Moved the 360 down, beside the ps3. And moved the media player + switch to the top of the shelf.

Now I have one rack completely empty and waiting for the ps4.

Also, in terms of preparations, I ordered a new lamp for my projector, for which I haven't changed the lamp since the end of 2009 (when I bought it). I kinda started noticing the degradation in quality with regular games already, looks good still, but for the ps4 I wanted a fresh lamp.
