It seems this was a Vita/PSP/3DS game before they decided to go with PS3. Either that or this is a new studio that is inexperienced with HD development. Anyway I ain't going to judge it till I have seen gameplay.

Based on IGN, this was one of first batch of Nier screens released:

Nier did some nice stuff with that really booming dynamic range effect, and a couple of other nice things, but a screenshot wouldn't have shown them.

Not that I ever meant to imply this game does look as good as Nier, just that Nier was really bad looking, and I still think it's incredible. As long as it looks serviceable, I don't expect much more. Nier also wasn't dealing with scale in the way this game will presumably have to.

I actually misread your initial post and thought you said it looks like Nier. Which you didn't, you just said "Nier was ugly as all hell". Sorry about that. I still feel that's incorrect, this looks ugly as all hell. Nier just looked like a low-budget current gen game with some nice art. This literally looks like a PS2 HD remaster so far. And not a high-end PS2 game either.
