New DriveClub gameplay videos (IGN)

So if you recall, at the initial reveal of Driveclub at the PlayStation meeting 2013, there was talk and footage portraying a "true 1st person driving experience" that was "not cockpit view". I thought this would have been a great way to examine all of the detail in the cars and feel more immersed in the racing experience. Yet, I have not seen or heard anything else about it again. Has it been scrapped? Will there be something similar to this or Autovista to check out the cars up close?

Didn't Shu Yoshida say that he tried Morpheus with it bit it made him feel sick so they didn't pursue any further?

The environment detail during that dawn transition. It looks so fucking realistic!

Edit:

The second half of the second vid cycles through the camera views. Around 1:40. The 1st person view you seek is there and it's low to the ground too. Looks awesome
Wasn't it supposed to be more of an inbetween mode?

This game looks amazing. Great sense of speed, and the environments look well thought out with a lot of work put into them. I cannot wait for the uncompressed 1080p videos. I am sure they will be great looking, the game already looks great in my opinion.

Agreed. The views they showed were standard. I liked the one where it was almost the Windscreen with a mere touch of the dash. The Windscreen also reflected sunlight/dash etc but it looks like it's now gone - doesn't look anywhere near as next gen without those details imo.

No I'm not talking about a driving view. Go back and check out the PlayStation Meeting footage. Here is a quote about the unveil that refers to what I'm talking about:

"Unlike other racing games, Drive Club plays as a first person experience – you start outside the car and have to climb inside the cabin before you can even start the engine"

Yes, I've been thinking the same thing for a while now. It looks like they dropped that concept entirely.

It would be goofy to model these cars up and then not allow you to view them while racing if you wanted, wouldn't it? I mean, there's always garage viewing, but I think it would have turned more than a few off.

We don't know yet. Rushy was responding to a question about the garage, not about the first person view before starting the race. This still needs to be confirmed.

Just watched the video.
First impression?.... dat compression smh...

Game looks great. Races are going to be mayhem.
cant wait.

That's not a quote, i think a guess from that web.

I don't remember Evolution speaking about moving in first person.

He also mentioned the way the weave of the material changes if it's brushed one way which suggests to me that it was going to have cars you can actually walk around and climb into. I'm not bothered at all that they've dropped it though (if they have) because it would probably have been surplus to the experience of racing anyway.

Here's the announcement from the horses mouth:

Oh, gotcha. Misunderstood what you meant. They haven't said its gone and that part at least seemed pretty functionally there even then. Seems unlikely they would drop it especially with all the effort that has gone into the cars. Maybe tweet Rushy and see whats up with it.

Hoy shit at the lighting in the first video. By far the best lighting in any game to date.

I love how the handling in the second video. Driving that Pagani looks like serious fun. Reminds me a lot of PGR, a easy but tight handle with a great sense of speed.

Can't wait for HQ footage, you notice a lot of details blurred during the day.

Why did Evo let IGN release these awful compressed videos that make the game look worse than it probably is. Wouldn't you want your game to look the best it can and release in the best format? Just absurd.

I see a lot of aliasing and the videos look worse than the previous videos of those 15 sec videos in some ways. I had the impression they were adding AA long time back. But this looks worse. Now who knows how much of this is caused by the shitty video quality.

Don't do that next time. Its bad advertising your game and I know this game probably looks much much better than shown in these videos.

They're planning to have them in HQ on the Driveclub website on Monday. Confirmed by the Product Manager for Driveclub on twitter :)

Don't recall a game where fans had to wait this annoyingly for new vids/info etc. as with Driveclub. Everything they showed thus far was pushed out to late, in crapy quality or in 5 second snippets. The whole marketing up to this point is a farce imo.

Sounds like Destiny as well, haha oh well right what can you do.

The game looks nice, I'm not a big racing sim fan but I will check this out.

My only complaint is that the steering wheel animations look really bad. They need to take some tips from PD. Steering animations look twitchy!

I am sure it's still there. I remember commenting on of Driveclub's facebook posts sometime last year asking the same, and DC responded said it's definitely in there.

Perhaps the poor quality is an attempt to hide the bad aliasing

I noticed this too. I don't think I'd use that view in general, because of how little of the environment you can see, but the twitchy hands make it worse.

Are you sure?

First portion looks like a beach. No idea where. Scotland would be my random guess.

That light, and those gorse bushes and that bridge and stream reminds me of up here in the North of England, so I could definitely see that as Western Scotland/ Cumbrian border.

My only complaint is that the steering wheel animations look really bad. They need to take some tips from PD. Steering animations look twitchy!

I think they said that's because of the 900 degree steering with a pad, so it looks off when the hands stay attached.

From what i recall Destiny had several 5-10min long gameplay showings in good quality at some point but i find not follow it that closely.

I still have not seen the genre defining interactive menus that pushed development for a full year back...meh.

Not that it should matter, but I don't understand everyone's reactions to these videos. It doesn't look impressive to my eyes at all.

As a wheel user, DriveClub's 'twitchy' animation is more appealing to me than PD's gamepad-optimised animation. I hope they don't take too many tips from PD - GT5 had the worst steering animation I've ever seen, and while GT6 fixed the worst-offending feature (thumbs the wrong side of the wheel), it still failed to deliver 1-to-1 rotation for wheels. I hope DriveClub's wheel rotation matching will be better.

(Having said that, GT is very good in terms of control with a gamepad, so hopefully DriveClub feels similar for gamepad users, of which you expect there'd be a larger percentage compared to a sim like GT.)

Damn. That's the exact style of cornering that's giving me hige PGR vibes.
Glued to the fucking road, G-forces out the ass, controls tighter than a vice grip.

It's all there, I just need to play it to confirm it.

This is exactly why I'm excited for this game. Looks so much like PGR4, I love it.

Wow.

Wooooooow. That was insanely boring, and honestly, not that pretty.
Watching those videos again those are my exact thoughts as well..

I'll wait till I see HQ footage before I judge its visuals, but the gameplay does look insanely bland. Still don't know where this game stands either, PGR and GRID for example had pretty unique identities while this just looks generic? Will wait till I see more footage to completely make my mind up though, would be nice to see some with the HUD and the Faceoff/Challenge system in action too.

Bleh YouTube footage but the game still looks gobsmackingly gorgeous. Those environments and cars are nothing short of stunning. And with full time of day control? Fucking yum.

This game needs custom soundtrack support - or I can pray that the PS4 will have console level support for it by then. I just want to put on a custom playlist and drive and drive and drive.
