new (?) FF XIII jump scan

I dont know Ami, Lightning (lol) looks way more awesome than Ashe, Penelo and Fran. I mean I love Yoshida but his characters in FF12 were pretty awful aside from Balthier and Basch.

Nah. You're allowed to think that - but then again, you also dislike FFXII so it's pretty irrelevant to my tastes.

uh whatever, I disliked the gameplay I thought the art direction was pretty awesome aside from the main cast. the judges looked cool I thought.

no i mean we pretty much disagree on everything related to RPGs, from artstyle to gameplay, so trying to find common ground here is already a lost cause. Specifically since I already stated I thought Lightning was another awful Nomura design :P

I guess I'm the winner. :D

The only time I've ever thought Nomura designs were ok, and I mean only in that it's when his style is at its most flattering, was in "It's a Wonderful World" DS. There's still things that irk me even then, but it's the best of his work imo.

I admit Nomura's designs CAN be too much. Lulu's design, for me anyway, was too much. It's like he knew everyone bitched about straps and belts and he designed Lulu as a big "**** you" to all his detractors.

Lightning though...I dunno. Something about her. I really love her design. I love her facial features, I love her outfit (and his zipper fetish never bothered me...there's really only one anyway, and it helps realize her design as some futuristic character), and I think I'm kind of turned on by her. :lol

hey at least with agree on the VA thing! ;)

I know when I showed my friend the first FFXIII screens his first reaction was that Lighting was hot.

That's really just about the worst way possible to evaluate good character design.

besides the zippers and buckles and superfluous pieces of clothing and armor, what I really hate is the faux-urban style he applies to many of his characters. It always seems so forced and out of place (see Seifer Jr. in the FFXIII scans, for example). In "It's a Wonderful World DS", it takes place in the modern world and actually makes sense from a design perspective :P

it always tends to be one extreme or the other with Nomura, but "It's a Wonderful World" fits his basic style best imo

Well, what makes you so sure that FFXIII isn't in the same type of world? If anything, it looks like the world that it takes place in is even more futuristic. I think he gets a lot of unnecessary hate. ;) Does Ashe bother you? She's got quite a bit of clothing on, like that nice cape and her bustier. :lol

I just find lightning to be very visually arresting. She is striking as a design. I want to know more about her, whereas I think if it were Yuna that was flashed onto the screen (despite her good looks), I'd feel kind of pedestrian. When those tiny story bits leaked out after Jump Festa, I thought the Lightning design was PERFECT.

But we'll see. I don't judge character designs without seeing how they mesh with the overall world design and art direction...which we know almost nothing about.

And FFXIII is like 10% completed. :lol

Actually, Toriyama stated at an interview before TGS that the engine is yet to be completed.
I just know what I read

"Motomu Toriyama, director of the main FFXIII title for the PS3, revealed to Gaimaga that scenario work for his project is 80% complete, with the game's visual engine, running on actual PS3 hardware, being nearly finished. "Now," he said, "is the time for the true start of FFXIII.""

Link

And with the fact that much of the work was already done back when it was a PS2 game... I don't see why it wouldn't make 2007

Unless you have something contradicting that

I agree. I think the designs in FFXIII are really good so far... Final Fantasy XII's were nothing to write home about either though, I mean come on Vaan? Even Balthier, as bad ass as he was had a "faux-urban" metrosexuality about him that didn't really fit.

I'm more iffy about FFXIII's locales than anything.

whos doing the music again? FFXII music is average

Repent, sinner.

It's Hamauzu, who should return the musical stylings to more of an Uematsu-esque feeling. Hamauzu rocks too.

SHIMOMURA!!!!!!! is doing Versus XIII.

btw there's a good example of something i dislike. One arm with a short glove, and one with an almost arm length covering. One arm with excess shoulder protection, one without anything! Such silly mismatched clothing.

Heh, so it's true what they say about symmetry.

I want YOU to go over into the other thread and look at the new Lost Odyssey screens right now. I just saw them after reading your complaints here, and that's the first time I noticed the half-dozen or more belts or belt-like elements on the main character :lol

Anyway, I'm happy that I'm not bothered in the least by stuff like this. In fact, one of my first reactions after seeing the FF13 trailer (right after ZOMG HAIR, next gen am here) was wow, nice physics on those clothes - without even noticing the abundance of superflous design elements! Can you believe that?

Also, the hate on this board for FFX is unbelieveable. I must have played a different game...

I like the sphere grid, at least, when it's unlocked. The International version of FFX fixed that 'problem.'

My problem with FFX stems from the terrible story, VA and characters of course... but primarily, the absurdly linear world. I mean, it was like one straight line for the entire game. It was disturbingly oppressive in this design, almost like a conveyer belt of anti-freedom and it's really unappealing to me.

The story wasn't bad, but any enjoyment I might have taken from it was destroyed because of the other things you listed.

I really think it was bad. I mean, come on, Tidus was a dream? :P

how, exactly, is it 'terrible' in your opinion? What could have offended you so very much to use the term 'terrible'? Seems a bit exaggerated to me... even for someone that has some bizarre anti-bias for Nojima and Kitase.

Amir0x said:

People bitch and moan so much about the lack of unique plot additions to RPGs in this day and age... and FFX does something that is both abstract and (subjectively) interesting and all the sudden it's terrible?

Damn, Amir0x... sorry you actually had to use your imagination with the concepts of FFX's story. @_@

Well, first you must realize 99.9% of all RPGs have a terrible storyline. I don't write for game magazines so I don't have to pretend these stories exist in a vacuum, when everything from books, to movies, to television present better storylines on a daily basis.

However, specifically about FFX, it can basically be summed up in 'everyone goes on a long journey. Tidus' father is a giant ****ing beast that terrorizes the world. And, oh wait, Tidus was really a dream all along.' It's so lame. It's not FFVIII-lame, but it's still lame. We could analyze the dialogue and shit, but hey FFX is not alone in its offenses.

TheJollyCorner said:

oh, is that what you think. That FFX was SO IMAGINATIVE, that I didn't like it? :lol

Amir0x said:

I realize the story had a lot of cliches, anime esque character personalities and asburd plot twist... I'm sure I would have enjoyed it at least a little if the game design wasn't so terrible.

Well...
Maybe it really was that bad...

I found nothing unique about the revelation involving Tidus. It's a JRPG tradition to attach those kind of ties to it's characters. I was just waiting for it.

TheJollyCorner said:

Maybe I never gave it a chance, but it honestly felt like all character development, story revelations and meanings were spoon fed to me.

I'll give FFX credit for one thing though, If I would have never played it I would have never started focusing on more obscure games like BoF: DQ or Shin Megami Tensei. :P

Now I just don't know

seriously...

i never was into RPG's until FFX came along... now i watch for new final fantasy games like a hawk. I thought FFX was pretty damn good... it kept me playing for awhile and i really digged the storyline.

anywho... this game looks amazing and i think the japanese design really makes this game look a cut above the rest.

it really looks flawless.

can anyone seriously point out something wrong with the graphics? character design is always debatable but everything esle is just... wow.

I need to see the video these screens came from.

You missed the thread about how much percent complete the game is overall.

FFX was really good in alot of aspects, but REALLY lame in others. I think it was a great fantasy world if abit forced and I enjoyed the characters besides Tidus and Yuna... Who were just okay at best.

My biggest problem is that once I got here I realised it really was just a straight forward path. It was an RPG only thanks to its random battles (which is more of a limitation than anything, by my opinion.) I think FFXIII will be great though, the voicework and script will be really good this time around and it should do everything FFX and X-2 did right even better.

I would not trust those as any sort of measurement. Are they measuring the percentage of what they're showing in the demo, or the percentage that the game is completed to date... How are they measuring that? And is that really any measurement of time? White Knight Story had something like a 2% figure, yet it looked very far along and there was Level 5 saying Sony was asking them to hurry it up to ship at launch, which makes it seem like it's really far along. So no I won't take those figures with anything but a grain of salt.

Usually FF's are by the year iterations. FFXII became the big exception (esspecially if you don't count X-2 and XI). I expect FFXIII will make it to Japanese shores by the end of 2007

Exactly how is it "faux-urban" when a lot of his designs reflect current fashion trends in Tokyo and other places?

But yeah, Nomura really should start designing uglier characters dressed in rags or covered up by armor...

According to Famitsu PS3 Blu-ray EX, published on Dec 19 2006, FFXIII is 13% complete, and has no scheduled release date... while MGS4 has a 2007 release date.

FFXIII Versus is 1.3% complete, according to the same magazine.

The real question here is not whether FFXIII comes out in 2007 or not, but rather "how the hell did they come up with 1.3% completion..."

The stuff in the trailer is pretty 'meh'. Especially in the throwback to FFX with that forest in the E3 trailer, but I like these buildings/airships!

These games are not set in modern Japan, for starters. And two, I've never personally seen anyone dress up like Seifer or Lightning. Unless they're cosplaying, of course! I guess that doesn't mean people like that don't actually exist, but it sure as hell ain't attractive.

It's true we know there are people in Japan who dress like Gackt. Regardless, I don't want people who dress like Gackt in my videogames even if it IS prevalent.

If I had to voice one complaint about Nomura, it would be all the Gackt. What the hell? Why is he in Crisis Core and Dirge?
