new (?) FF XIII jump scan

My problem with FFX stems from the terrible story, VA and characters of course... but primarily, the absurdly linear world.
Whats the problem with a linear world, when really most other games at best give you a linear progression amongst a non-linear world (Z:TP). Its really the norm amongst most games (esp. RPGs), and those who give you choices inevitably give you too few (ToS, SoA). Better to structure the world around story progression than give you a false sense of freedom, IMO.

And at least FFX had a hell of a lot of side-quests and incentive to explore once you get the airship.

Well, I vastly prefer the 'linear progression amongst a non-linear world' approach. It is, at least, a better approach to handle the idea of 'freedom' for a gamer. As a gamer, that's what is appealing to me. I want freedom, the more of it the better. I realize there has to be some concessions made depending on how central a role the story plays. But I believe Final Fantasy X is an example of going way too overboard. It's just one line from start to end, with almost no meaningful exploration to be had.

This heightens the feeling of 'fabrication' of environment, and helps pull me as a gamer out of the world. So on top of ruining the immersion, it also is far less rewarding to me as a gamer if the game is essentially holding your hand on a straight path.

Choices is what is appealing to me.

Heh, but we're so off subject now... I don't know how any of us can tell atm just how FFXIII will handle its freedom. I just personally hope it is not like FFX in the least in this regard.

Game is looking nice... I'm not even going to ask if it's real-time or not. I really don't care at this point. Once SE releases a playable demo, be it for the "new E3" or what be it, I'll judge for myself.

As for what it looks like now, I would have to say the game is simply amazing.

So dudes, are those real-time and in-game or just real-time and cinematics a la FFX cinematics (higher polycounts)?

FFX / X-2 was interesting cause it had:

- realtime, gameplay character models (worst)
- realtime, cinematics character models (better)
- CG characters (best, with self-shadowing and uber polycounts/ textures/ effects)

I didn't play FF12 yet.

FF12 characters had half the poly count of FFX main characters, but everything had much better textures.

The scene depicted in the screens being posted (Lightning flying through the air face first) is, it would strongly seem, a real-time cutscene. That is without a doubt the real-time model that you see in the battle sequences of the various trailers. Though, at least in the case of XIII, the "gameplay" model holds up VERY well to the cutscene model. There are two shots, one from a cutscene and one from a battle, that pretty much look identical (and the character is in the exact same position), though the cutscene has cleaner lighting and a few extras that don't seem to be present in the gameplay portion - and better backgrounds (though the area is a bit more interesting). The hair is a little better.

Real-time cutscene:

FFXII in-game character models are fantastic, in fact you can spin the camera around and get a closer look at the characters' faces during exploration to see just how detailed they are even compared to the real-time cutscenes, that's one area that FFXII vastly improved over FFX/X-2 was that you don't see crappy character models during battle or exploration, even the NPCs aren't too shabby, they don't look out of place because they were still very well textured and polished, unlike X/X-2 which had some jarringly bad NPC models, not to mention the NPCs animated much better in FFXII whereas in X/X-2 things were rather stiff.

Given this is the PS3 we're dealing with though I don't expect a huge difference between in-game/cutscene models in FFXIII.

Hey, cool, a debate about what is and isn't real-time in FFXIII. We certainly haven't had one of these before.

Second pic is definetly touched up. No way you can deal a 687HP damage with an uppercut. NO WAY I SAY!

Absolutely incredible. I'm sure it's all realtime,I imagine it will probably look even better when it actually releases. Never doubt square.

Lightning looks beautiful as ever on that new scan. <3 <3 <3

I'm not really a big fan of the enemies they've been designing lately though. The stuff in FF7 and back (doesn't matter too much since the older ones aren't 3D) is much better than what they've had recently. Well, XII had some pretty interesting enemies too I suppose.

I knew that the day I would a buy a 360 would be the day FFXIII screens would come out to haunt me :(

Looks stunning as hell. Will buy PS3 for that when it comes out

I'm very curious on how the battle system will work. FFX IMHO did it the best - I LOVED fighting in that game...
45 minute Earth Eater battle FTW!
I also highly enjoyed the FFXII fighting system - different but still very fun. As long as Squienix gets that right I'll be doing fine.

That ATB system looks pretty interesting...

each ability costs a certain amount of time on the ATB bar, which ticks down in real time... queue up multiple actions, and have the tick down in real time.

Can't pause the game, but instead dramatically slow it down (ala bullet time) to make decisions.

What they should also include to balance things is a refresh timer on certain moves... akin to MMO style skills. That way they can include intresting desperation and more powerful moves and have them balanced that way.

They should also include skill chains and magic bursts... timing the attacks of multiple characters just right so you produce extra damage.

Hell, FFXI has an awesome combat system... skill chain, magic bursts and exp chains... bookended by the worst grinding system in the history of MMOs.

They should also reintroduce limit attacks, but make them similar to FFXI; builds up quickly, not overpowering... build up multiple bars of limit break... but allows you to unleash as a single bar, multiple bars, or even instead of a powerful flashy attack, allow the character to use it as a buff, or some other positive but relatively small effect.

Or for that matter the 5 different ones in boss form. ;)
They are called Mandragoras and there are different variations/species of them.

They originated from FFXI.

WTF? Why do youtube videos no longer load for me? The page comes up fine but there is just a big white blank where the video is supposed to be. It's been doing this a few days now.

Edit: Nevermind, seems to be firefox... working fine in Opera.
