New Final Fantasy XV cam videos - Luminous Studio tools/tech + Open world exploration

Holy shit. I hope games don't get to big, shits gonna be boring going from place to place.

The large map works in Just Cause 2 because of grappling hook. It's like Noctis's warp except you can warp to anywhere you wish, within a certain range of course.

That area is still in Duscae I think. And we'll be able to go there in the demo. This area is likely a hidden area accessible from the caves where we saw Goblins.

Perhaps.

it would be real shame if we don't have our own controllable airship when we see these things flying around in the world....

Yeah. Hell, I just want to warp on to those things, kick off the soldiers and pilot them myself right then and there lol.

Also, can't wait to see the PS4 upgrade of these :D

Not completely out of the questions, especially when E3 2013 clearly shown Noctis climbing onto an enemy's airship, flying above the grounds.

But given how Tabata described the car as the "airship" of the previous Final Fantasy series, I think this could mean three things.

1) We spend most of the time of the game with car as primary transport, but fully controllable airship is available relatively late in this game (more so than previous instalments).

2) Like we've seen in E3 2013, we could have temporary airship controls during certain events and moments, either direct or indirect control of the airship. But no airship as actual transportation.

3) None of the above.

Gven how intensive the effects are in the entirety of the world including the physically calculated cloud, weather, day/night cycles and what not, I was afraid this could pose way too much difficulty to get an airship running without causing a serious dip in game performance.
I think 1) is a somewhat likely explanation. Airships were the main means of longer distance transportation in past games simply because that's the only thing that would work in miniature world maps with oceans & mountains dividing the world and even in games like FFVIII where cars are available, it's mostly as novelty and not all that useful in the bigger picture. Due to the way FFXV aims for a more realistically proportioned world, I'd think car is kind of the better way of moving around for the most part simply because you'll probably experience the world better that way and it's faster to just jump off the car than trying to find some place to land, so in that way they are probably like airships as main transportation. That doesn't shut away the possibility of airships, especially as a late-game way of getting around quicker.

I wonder if there will be
HD
towns.

From the looks of it, there won't be towns but "mini-towns" like gas stations, motels, inns, small shops or something.

At least Nomura said that in addition to the bigger cities, there would be smaller settlements/villages/towns or something like those as well. I think we can see some lines of houses behind Noctis as they are driving through the countryside. Maybe those are smaller towns.

5 large cities/capital, Lucis, Accordo (might be renamed to Altisia now), Niflheim, Solheim, Tenebrae, with various towns and random settlements.

@Dark_castle: Aren't those the nations? in that case, Altissia would be the capital/city name.

Apparently in the 4Gamer interview, Tabata mentioned we'd be able to visit towns in the demo.

I wonder how big the overworld will be compared to Just Cause 2 map.

And yet a big problem with Just Cause 2 was that most of the locations in its environment were just copied and pasted over and over again, resulting in a really boring and repetitive world that was unfit for exploration.

Less is more. Not all of the time, but most of the time.

Just Cause 2 grand scale was really impressive back in 2009 since it had virtually no loading times either.

The problem with that reasoning is that it assumes game development is as simple as copypasting from old engine to new engine and BAM! Everything works just fine!

What I am saying is that you are better off discounting any concept work or even any work outside of CGI video from pre-2012, because the development timeline of this game is haphazard enough that undoubtedly there will be ideas cut to make milestones and deadlines. The amount of assumptions in this thread made about what will be in this game based off of old information or vague details is disturbing. People forget that technically these livestreams are still to an extent marketing tools, and also that difficulties in game development can lead to "lies" purely because the devs may make promises that cannot be kept.

It is bad to build a house of expectations of things that have yet to be shown. FF13 is a prime example: the expectations were sky high and the resulting product disappointing. Game hype is good publicity, but harmful if one gets too carried away.

Yep. For all we know, the majority of FFXV could be as linear as FFXIII -- except that we start out, or eventually get to play in an "open area" or 2, similar to some areas in FFXIII. Maybe the area they've already shown off is the single "open world" area in the game -- maybe intentionally, or maybe they eventually have to reduce their ambitions, and make the game much more linear.

This will be my first Final Fantasy since X. The tech on display is absolutely astonishing. It's what I expected out of this generation and looks to be the Final Fantasy I've been waiting for since X. Love the road trip atmosphere and the design in general. Got the feeling we're going to start seeing some really ambitious games over the next couple of years.

This is pretty much the exact same for me. FFX was the last Final Fantasy I actually finished. FFXV looks like it's finally meeting my expectations for a true next-gen entry in the series.

The animals finally look realistic. This is something I've wanted for a long long time.

There'll also be longer warp for Noctis mentioned last year, which I assume a fancy name for fast travel.

So for those who don't like to explore, you could stick to the main road, sometimes chilling out and have a coffee near the petrol station or a nice camp at the end of day.Or you could be more adventurous and see what could be hidden away beneath the deep forest or along the mountain.

Also, people should not forget that Duscae is supposedly a starting area and it's only 10% of the entirety, so I imagine the landscape and atmosphere can be drastically different. For instance

This mysterious, crimson skies area seem to feature different technology (more advanced) and has a more unsettling atmosphere.

The art direction in this game could be something for the ages honestly. I'd really like SE to redefine what means epic rpg with this. The mood in this, the way they use different light sources..

hoping the story hits the same boat....the trailer so far has had this become my most anticipated FF RPG in a long, long time. If they hit this home...it could really spark the industry again, all eyes on SE to deliver and see if there is still interest in the masses for JRPG's. This generation is becoming a huge testing ground for the industry for the likes of Japan. I still think there is plenty of interest in Japan in console gaming...it just needs a huge kick/jumpstart again. Kind of like FFVII for the 5th gen.

It's competitor is Xenoblade. If it tops Xenoblade, and that's a huge if, then oh man...

Besides the pop-in while driving the car, I hope they fix some of the character movement issues. Plenty of times you can see Noctis' friends running into trees or into Noctis himself. Also some of the beasts walk in place or get stuck in the environment.

Still plenty of time to fix stuff, but I hope they consider these.

It's good to have expectations so extremely grounded, you're six feet under.

Personally, I feel the emphasis on such a tight knit group like this is a breath of fresh air. A sense of brotherhood. Not every JRPG needs to have a large group of characters, at least in my opinion.

Wasn't sure if i could ever get excited by a FF Game again after 13 disappointed me so much.. but 15 got me. Shit looks sooo good

Agreed...we wouldn't be saying how great the info release was if it didn't look incredible.

Holiday 15 in JP, Q1 16 for the west?

I really hope it releases by the end of 2015 in JP, but dont FF historically release in JP with a console userbase of ~4 Mio.? this was the case with FF VII / X / XIII iirc.
My only hope is that SE looks at the Western userbase and releases the game regardless the JP numbers because it will be hard for the PS4 to reach that 4 mio mark anytime soon.

If there is an airship I hope it allows for access to optional dungeons.cool shit like that instead of the novelty of flying an airship.
