I love her but I find it amazing she was ever a mainstream success. "Criminal" and "Shadowboxer" were radio hits, damnym. What was the psyche of people back then like.

A bunch of her tour dates went up for sale in the past few days. I bought a few tickets for her Cleveland show.

Check her website for info.

I really like the new song. Gives me quite the Joanna Newsom vibe, which I didn't expect. It doesn't strike me as a single, at least not in 2012. Given how long her record label held the album, I had figured they would release something more poppy, or perhaps Adele-y. Then again maybe this isn't the actual single.

Oh god, I've waited so long for this. I'm going to totally envelop myself in this album for at least a few days after it releases.

Every Single Night sounds great. Got in on repeat.

Todd Glass keeps mentioning he wants to have her as a guest on his podcast. Hasn't happened so far, but it would be awesome.

Love how sparse the production is, if the rest of the album is like that it's going to be awesome.

I dunno about this as the choice for the first single though, it's my least favorite of the 3 songs I've heard so far(anything we want, valentine, and this song).

I WANT THIS SO BAAAAAAAD

If she toured with Neko Case I'd be set on pretty ladies being sad for the next 5 years.

I had never heard of the jon brion version of Extraordinary Machine before and listening to it now.. it's amazing. All of the songs just have this energy to them the album versions can't match. I still like the album version too, but I would love to see this version be finished and officially released. :(

I just want to say that the new single was basicaly the only music I listened today and yesterday.

And no, they were not silent days.

According to Apple, the concept behind the title The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do is hard to explain but has to do with the idea of "being still in the middle of everything else but being able to feel everything." The idler wheel is the gear that does no work, drives no shafts. "It doesn't look like it's doing anything, but I feel like it's connected to everything," she says. It's about how she feels inside the machine of her own life and career. It's about how she marks time.

She read about whipping cords, which are used to bind and repair frayed ropes, in "this book about boating that was at my last boyfriend's house." The idea is less about avoiding mistakes than learning how to cope with them. "You're gonna get punched and blown around," she says. She looks over my shoulder into the empty restaurant, tries to figure out how to express what she wants to express. "What's valuable is to know how to make something out of that." Apple has had a lot of years to learn.

Another track:

Werewolf

I could liken you to a werewolf the way you left me for dead
But I admit that I provided a full moon
And I could liken you to a shark the way you bit off my head
But then again I was waving around a bleeding, open wound

But you were such a super guy 'til the second you get a whiff of me
We are like a wishing well and a bolt of electricity
But we can still support each other, all we gotta do's avoid each other
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key

The lava of the volcano shot up hot from under the sea
One thing leads to another and you made an island of me

And I could liken you to a chemical the way you made me compound a compound
But I'm a chemical, too, inevitable you and me would mix
And I could liken you to a lot of things but I always come around
'Cause in the end I'm a sensible girl, I know the fiction of the fix

But you were such a super guy 'til the second you get a whiff of me
We are like a wishing well and a bolt of electricity
But we can still support each other, all we gotta do's avoid each other
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key

Loving those new tracks.

The imagery in the video is absolutely insane, almost uncomfortably so at times. Brilliant. One of the best videos of the year - and surprisingly high-budget for an artist like Fiona.

And is it just me, or does the production sound a little different in the video?

She's seriously a goddess among women. Everything about her music is just so damn fantastic. So happy to hear she's got a new album coming, and that video...

Shit she's playing in Ithaca on Tuesday, and I'll be in Binghamton that week... So tempted to go see her.

Listened to the album a few times now through NPR. All the singles released so far stand out, but the rest is growing on me fast. Seems like she did it again!

I never heard of her before this thread.
Listening to her "Extraordinary Machine" album for the second time today and its so good.
Will definitely get the new album when it comes out.
Thanks for the thread very enlightening.

Jesus, man! Listen to Tidal and When the Pawn... too. They're both amazing.

Holy shit this album just blew my mind listening to it straight through.

It just keeps getting heavier and heavier, weighed down by some great completely discordant piano especially in the middle part, gets a little brighter with Anything We Want then it ends with that amazing upbeat ridiculously layered harmony on Hot Knife. It's fucking amazing, Might be her best work yet when taking as a whole.
