New Fire Emblem announced for 3DS

Pretty pumped for this, Awakening had its issues but it was still good fun and i'm rather optimistic that some of those flaws will be handled better in this sequel seeing that Awakening itself could be viewed as an entry that could ease newcomers in with its more simple map design and basic plot, while I'm not expecting Radiant Dawn levels of those elements I do think that now they've got more people on board the map design and plot will return to being a bit more involved.
And while not every design is a winner I think Kozaki does great art with a nice distinct style to it so I'm looking forward to seeing more of the cast down the line.

Unfortunately I doubt my gripes with the open map structure and more grindy elements will be taken care of, at this stage I just accept that the series is seen as more welcoming under this structure.

Something kinda minor I want this game to improve on that probably won't happen.

I hope critical/special skill attacks are actually cool looking this time and worth checking out the battle animations for.

FE:A completely sucked in that department barring Lethality.

Pretty much. I had these complaints ever since I finished it. I don't think awakening is even in the top 5 FE games but I still really like it.

I feel similarly. There are a lot of things about Awakening I don't like, but the core gameplay is still solid.

I hope we will still be able to make our own hero.

I'm still thinking that glowing person choking the blue haired girl in the water is the avatar. They didn't show a face or any defining feature so I'm assuming (if that was the avatar) customization is back in. Kind of like how in FEA the avatar was always wearing their hood.

And that maid is the person who found you laying on the ground.

I've watched the trailer a couple of times now and the music just blow my mind.

Do we know who the composer is?

Atlus? They aren't working on a main Fire Emblem game. They are working on SMTxFE, but I doubt it'll use that graphical style.

yes, I'm talking about SMT x FE, and we don't know anyting about it. it could have this style, it could have another one, it could play like FE or like SMT...I just want a FE-ish game on my Wii U.

Hhhhmmm.

-I hope we get the dancer from the get go.
-Dancer lady flashes her panties.
-Is the dancer our lord now? There's no blue haired dude that could be one.
-It kinda looks like there's a male dragon.
-One of the characters has a fan when attacking. New class?

Story was just average but has any FE game really had a story that was that much better? Also I don't understand the complaint about grinding. I beat the whole game without grinding once, just doing the main and side missions. Also from what others are saying pairing has been in past games so I don't see how this one can be faulted for it.

The Fire Emblem series isn't exactly known for its stories, but Awakening's is lazier than usual. FE4's is very effective (and has some twists that even modern games might blanch at), FE5 has its moments, and FE9 and 10 are both solid enough to add drama to the battles.

As for pairing, it depends whether you are referring to the "pair-up" battle mechanic or the relationship match-making. The former is unique to Awakening. The latter exists in other games, but it's only in FE4 and FE13 that romantic relationships are a key element of the experience.

That said, the "waifu" stuff is not one of my major complaints against Awakening because I've always fast-forwarded through support conversations anyway. I only care about what the characters do in battle and prefer to let their stories emerge from the gameplay.

EDIT: I will say that although waifu-like fascination with certain characters is a series fixture, it's taken up a larger percentage of the conversation since Awakening. I find that annoying.

If they continue where Awakening left off with Ending A then it could lead into this game.

The ending where they don't finish off Grima and have to fight Grima again years later

Such great music in the trailer though, I loved the hints of the FE theme, laced with a mix of both European and Japanese instruments. I'm very hyped about the east vs. west theme of this, having a lack of a defined enemy faction really hurt FE:A.

Look forward to having to protect a Dancer lord/main character who can't attack for most of the game.

Given that Oliva could use swords, I'm pretty certain they won't make a non-combat character outside of Tier 1 healers, same as Awakening.

And on that note, I hope they keep double staff exp in. Healers were much less of a pain to keep leveled in Awakening.

This looks really different to Awakening in terms of aesthetics and themes. It sort of evokes a feudal Japan style in places, which is great. I'd prefer that to Awakening's more fantastical setting (even though it was a brilliant game anyway).

Yeah, it's hard to say what form it could take. But if Atlus is still the main developer of it, I doubt it will play more like FE than SMT and I doubt they would use this visual style.

Eh I like the character designs, can't wait for this. Hope they reveal the main character soon and as long as it's not another blue haired male I'm happy.

Even better: There's both feudal japanese and medieval european factions

Dancers are incredibly useful. I wouldn't have any issues with a story important dancer.

The best dancers are the herons, otherwise you might as well just use a different (read: better) character.

Yeah, I should've said 'can attack well'.

I hope there is more expansion/interaction with waifus this time. It was just so shallow in Awakening that it was hard to care. A handful of generic scenes and then the end, like come on.

Pairing have been in the previous games but, aside from 4, nothing was as prominent as Awakening (enough so I missed them or forgot them until this thread).

Pairing as it existed in Awakening didn't exist in the other games though. Pair Up replaced Rescue.

Rescue puts you at a disadvantage - you take one unit off the battlefield, but it reduces the stats of the unit that rescued them, and it's limited by the constitution/weight of the characters (i.e., a mage can't rescue a paladin). Pair Up increases stats and gives the second character an opportunity to attack/guard which is a complete reversal from what Rescue did.

EDIT: I will say that although waifu-like fascination with certain characters is a series fixture, it's taken up a larger percentage of the conversation since Awakening. I find that annoying.

This is honestly the biggest reason I want it gone. It's disappointing that FE discussion now devolves into Waifu Wars, much more than ever before.

A new Fire Emblem? I'm very pleased; it is my favourite series after all.

Looks like pair-up is returning. I've got mixed feelings on that considering how overpowered it is in Awakening; the stat bonus could be absurd at times and dual attacks could make short work of even the toughest enemies.

I'd be happy if this one has better level design as Awakening was lacking in this area.

If anything the biggest thing I want changed are the classes:

Hero and Sorcerer classes feel way too strong to me.

Allow Bow Knight to counter attack with sword if they just used a bow and are close range attacked.

Flying classes have always felt weak to me.
Flying classes are almost always quite useful. They just require you to be a little careful around archers and stuff.

Does pairing help? I'm new to the series and have played about 15 hours of Awakening and really never pair my units. I don't get the benefit. Just that they can attack together and/or counter more?
When units are paired up, the 'lead' unit gets stat bonuses that depend on the support unit's class (e.g. if the support unit is a knight, the lead unit gets a large boost in strength and defence). This bonus is significant; with the right pair up, a stat can be increased by up to 10 points; that's a lot!

In addition to that, whenever the lead unit attacks the support unit has a chance to do a dual attack. If the support level of the lead and support unit is high, the chance of dual attacks can often be greater than 90%, making them a reliable source of damage. When the lead unit is attacked, the support unit has a chance to completely nullify the attack at no penalty.

Basically; two units might be okay on their own but turn into unstoppable beasts when paired up.

What fantastic news.

I don't know anything about Shin Kibayashi, but I'm extremely happy about Yusuke Kozaki. I loved the designs in Awakening.
