Melissa McCarthy, fuck the haters.

Yeah, the backlash is surreal. I thought she was great in Gilmore Girls. But I suppose most people have only been exposed to her in more broad recent roles.

This. She's actually quite winning/charming in that show. Has great screen presence. A dynamic actress. Doesn't waste any time on screen. It's all down to the material. I think she can deliver.

I'm totally stunned. I can't believe people don't like her. I think she's amazing! The Heat is my favorite movie of hers so far. There are, in fact, NO fat jokes in it. And it's hilarious! Check it out and prove me wrong. Bridesmades, on the other hand, was uncomfortable for me to watch. She was definitely the butt of all the jokes in that one. Is that why people prefer it over The Heat? Fuck that noise.

AND! I mentioned to my friend I thought she would be PERFECT for this kinda thing MONTHS before Bill Murray mentioned her as his top pick! There're a ton of funny ladies out there, and I would be happy to see any combination of... most of them in the new movie, but Melissa McCarthy's brand of humor would fit perfectly in the Ghostbuster's universe, so I don't understand the hate.

A Ghostbusters without Harold Ramis at the controls is not a Ghostbusters I'm interested in. It was his baby and quintessential 80's zeitgeist. Let it rest already.

She was fantastic in The Gilmore Girls, I think if anything she's just been over exposed. I know everyone would be crazy to not take advantage of the positive reception from one role and use it as a springboard for other things. Those other things are becoming the same old same old stuff though.

Another example - Australia's own Rebel Wilson, there are a lot of people happy with her success. Most Australians (myself included) can't stand her and don't get how she got popular in America. She was the brains trust behind a lot of UNFUNNY comedy shows over here.

I think I'll bury my head in the sand, if the movie turns out decent then great :-), if not I'll just pine for the original and pretend Ghostbusters in 2015-16 does not exist.

Im out. And screw anyone who hates GB2, its just as much fun as the first.

Don't know if this was posted, but Feig confirmed this was a full on reboot with zero ties to the original:

How did this all come about?

...

My favorite thing to do is work with funny women. I was like, what if it was an all female cast? If they were all women? Suddenly, my mind kind of exploded: that would be really fun. And then I thought, well, what if we just make it new? It’s not coming into the world that existed before. It’s always hard if the world has gone through this big ghost attack, how do you do it again? I wanted to come into our world where there’s talk of ghosts but they’re not really credible, and so what would happen in our world if this happened today?

So in the universe that you conceived, it’s like the world of the first two movies didn’t exist?

Yeah. I love origin stories. That’s my favorite thing. I love the first one so much I don’t want to do anything to ruin the memory of that. So it just felt like, let’s just restart it because then we can have new dynamics.

...

Do you suspect that you might make room for any returning cast member cameos?

Well, I mean, look, those are my comedy heroes. So as far as I’m concerned, anybody wants to come back I welcome with open arms. It would just be in different roles now, but it would be fun to figure out how to do that.

Full interview here.

Full reboot... but why :( It is TOTALLY not necessary to do a full reboot... sigh.

If there was any series more setup for real sequels with an all-new core cast it would be Ghostbusters. They are missing a good opportunity.

There's also no reason why it can't be an origin story (since he says he loves them so much) this way. Just have it where Ghosts have been out of the picture for many years and there had been no need for Ghostbusters in like a decade or more, and now suddenly there's some event and, whoa, ghosts are back! And now you need a new crew of Ghostbusters. See how easy that is?

Yeah, it could really just be set much further in the future and still work out perfectly well. I'm wondering why he's opting for a full reboot

There was never any possible way a GB sequel would have worked out well, so this new direction sounds awesome.

My interest died when Ramis passed away.
People should check out the IDW trade comics though, they're pretty good.

Dan Akroyd isn't going to be happy about this.

He could on the verge of a four fold crossrept. An anger surge of incredible - even dangerous - proportions.

Yup, so fun. Vigo creeped me the hell out as a kid, run dmc theme was great, biscuit was brilliant as the crazy professor, statue of liberty sequence was amazing...I've never really understood the hate

This

0% interest in this " reboot "

The original will be the classic that lives on forever. This crap will just be thrown in with the pile like the new ninja turtles movie

Was interested...then all hopes of this being amazing were dashed with the writer being attached and the likelihood of Melissa McCarthy.

Think there is a chance that the awful Tammy might make her not a shoe-in?

All they had to do was take the Extreme Ghostbusters cartoon and turn it into a movie. That's all they had to fucking do.

Does anyone actually really want an all female ghostbusters team?
What a waste.

Paul Feig only has two upcoming projects that are not confirmed to feature her, and that is a romantic comedy called "The Better Woman" and the new Ghostbusters. I would say she is a lock for both. He seems to not be going out of his comfort zone as a director, so I would say prepare for the worst.

In public? Yes. Secretly? No.

It's a stroke of genius though, if you think about it. And I have already seen this taking effect on Twitter.

By giving it an all-female twist. They have made it immune to criticism. They know damn well that nobody was going to like a Ghostbusters remake/reboot. It was going to get trashed no matter what, because it's a classic and beloved franchise. But now it has this all-female gimmick (And yes, it is a gimmick, otherwise Feig wouldn't have even mentioned it), you can't say that it looks shit without being called sexist, misogynist, close-minded, and so on. It's the perfect crime. They have a get-out-of-jail card that they can now pull on haters.

Call it something else, please don't ruin the legacy of Ghost Busters.

Harold Ramis is dead, and was the writer for the first ones, I'm sorry but after seeing what all these reboots have become, I don't want this classic gem tainted too.

Make a Ghost Smashers movie, instead.

Trying to reboot/remake old classics, should be considered attempted vandalism. It's like painting over an old painting, that's renowned and considered a master piece.

Then again, it would just make it clear how great the first Ghost Busters are, if the remake go down in blazing fire.

Rest in peace Harold.

Feig, don't shit on this great man's legacy, he's far superior to you.

Ghostbusters died with Harold Ramis,

I want no part of this Melissa McCarthyism

Yea. I just don't get how people find her funny. There is funny and then there is acting like a buffoon and she does the later. Actually reminds me of a female Chris Farley who I honestly did not find funny. I'd actually be ok with a cast that includes women but from the beginning they've been beating the drum of oh we're making it a point to make this an all woman cast. They're all going to be women just to be women. I don't like that one bit. I'd hate it just as much if they went out of their way to go oh we're making this an all male cast to make it an all male cast. Just find a good group of folks who are funny and that could actually be seen as Ghostbusters. They're not doing that with this though.

By the Old Gods and the New...

Full 'fresh' reboot with Melissa McCarthy?

NO.

NO.

NO.

NO.

SUPLEX THIS MAN

HEAD HIM OFF AT THE PASS

CUT THE FUCKING TETHER

WHERE IS THE SENATE

RIP Ghostbusters franchise. This movie will bomb.

I doubt it's good, but I wouldn't be so quick to say it'll bomb.

Does anyone actually really want an all female ghostbusters team?
What a waste.

"What if they're girls!" is certainly an odd jumping off point.

Nothing against woman being in it, of course. But, in the interview he talks about how he was told nobody wanted to touch the franchise, including himself, until he came up with this all-female idea. If that's all you can creatively come up with, maybe everyone else was right to not want to touch it.

We'll see. It certainly won't be any more or less Ghostbusters because of it. We all know that whether it was all male, all female, or a mix doesn't matter. It will never have the same feel/tone of the originals.

Considering an all-female Ghostbusters movie to be a terrible idea isn't sexist, misogynistic, or close-minded and the idea certainly is not immune to criticism. Especially with Feig attached. I don't think their idea was to try and be immune to criticism by making people seem sexist, I am pretty positive that this is just what Paul Feig wanted to make. That is all he seems to want to make regardless. If you are suggesting that is a brilliant strategy by the studio, that would make zero sense too. If anything this is a potentially riskier project by doing a massive overhaul of what Ghostbusters fans expect. If they don't like it they won't see it regardless of whether or not they were public with their disapproval. Unless you think that they will still begrudgingly see this movie just so that everyone is aware that they do not hate women.

The only solace I take in the whole situation is that we were not let down by Ghostbusters 3, which had it have been made with the original cast would be a lot more depressing if it was terrible.

Wasn't Dan Akyroyd's original GB vision was to set it in space? I think Ramis and the director smashed that idea and set it in NYC.

I thought that it was like multidimensional. Ghostbusters was a world-wide franchise at the start of the movie and they hopped around through different dimensions fighting giant monsters and shit. Marshmallow Man was going to be pretty early in the movie, and just one of many big creatures. Of course, that movie would have cost a billion dollars to make.

One of those examples where a limited budget forced creativity and resulted in a better movie.

EDIT: From wikipedia.

The original story, as written by Aykroyd, was very different from what was eventually filmed. In the original version, a group of "Ghostsmashers" traveled through time, space, and other dimensions combating huge ghosts (of which the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man was one of many). They wore SWAT-like outfits and used wands instead of proton packs to fight the ghosts. (Original storyboards show them wearing riotsquad-type helmets with movable transparent visors.)

Aykroyd pitched his story to director/producer Ivan Reitman, who liked the basic idea but immediately saw the budgetary impracticality of Aykroyd's first draft. At Reitman's suggestion, Aykroyd and Ramis gave the story a major overhaul, hammering out the final screenplay during a three-week stay in a Martha's Vineyard bomb shelter in May–June 1982.

People really fucking hate Melissa McCarthy here. Holy shit.

The more something you dislike becomes popular, the more you grow to hate it. It's like Nickelback. The first time you heard one of their songs, you didn't hate it. You just thought it was boring and generic. Then you heard Nickelback on the radio for a decade straight. Now you hate Nickelback.

They should put an all female team and an all male team in the movie. They could be in competition with each other, sabotage each other along the way, but in the end work together to defeat a common threat.

I don't get why it can't be a mixed-gender team.

I know that, whatever gender the team may be, I won't go see it if McCarthy is in it. She's the female Sam Kinison. And I hated his style too.

Im not usually adverse to saying 'why not, let them reboot and see what comes' but Ghostbusters is amongst I think three or four movies, like Back To The Future, where a reboot can just go die in a fucking fire.

Make a supernatural comedy. Just leave the name alone.

In what world will a "supernatural comedy" not be compared to Ghostbusters anyway? At least with the Ghostbusters name, they can drop the pretense and do the stuff people want to see.

I think having an all-female cast would be awesome if they can pull the right people together. People acting overly-possessive about the status quo of Ghostbusters being a certain way (even though it's remained dormant and stagnating for decades) are only demonstrating why the series should probably try opening up to different directions.
